OpenDataPlane is a framework for developing cross-platform user space dataplane applications, like it is the case with Open vSwitch. For this we have written a “netdev provider” based on ODP to make OVS capable to work on a variety of platforms through the abstractions provided by the ODP API. The OpenDaylight Controller’s role is to manage virtual OVS switches/bridges running on top of ODP, both through a GUI web interface as well as through a series of scripts that take advantage of the REST northbound API of the OpenDaylight Controller. The video also shows how to control OVS switches through the ovs-ofctl command line tool of OVS, that is equivalent to using an externally connected controller implementing the OpenFlow specification (like the OpenDaylight Controller).
Right now the ODP netdev layer for OVS runs on linux-generic using basic socket transport, and it is scheduled to be running on linux-dpdk and linux-keystone2 ODP platforms. For the purpose of the demo the ODP netdev layer doesn’t take advantage of ODP’s packet scheduler, it only sends and receives packets in burst mode. For that it might be necessary to implement a dpif provider, which is one layer upper in the design of Open vSwitch.

You can see far and wide from this vantage point and the startup company Gloopt has created a video product that it wants to spread far and wide all over the world. Gloopt is a Video Application that enables individual experts and enterprises to create short meaningful videos that shows off their product, their service, their technology, their favorite destination, instant endorsements from customers and clients, home listings, a quick tip, an expert opinion, etc. Gloopt will enable a company to get to the top of its market by being the most visible, helpful resource to its target audiences via very effective short form videos. In fact it enables separate company functions including marketing, customer service, training and media relations to become more integrated, cohesive and leveraged.
Omate releases their new Omate X Smartwatch, which is the first Smartwatch to use the new MediaTek MT2502 Aster processor. The goal being 5-day battery life on 400mAh battery, runs on Nucleus OS, it’s a companion device to the Android or iOS Smartphone using Bluetooth 4.0 Low Energy. To be sold at $129, it’s Omate’s entry-level Smartwatch with 1.54″ 240×240 display.

Marc Canter talks about his project called Interface where Apps will feature authored “smarts” (that can run in the background ) and “foreground” interactive sequences and mobile interfaces, which would have media playback and record, points, leaderboards, cloud based Content publishing all built into the experience. The tool is designed to work with IFTTT, SmartThings, Nest, HomeKit, Fitbit, Galaxy Gear and any other coolio wearable liveable Wink kind of platform thingie that’s gonna be important to work with moving forward. They want to be friends to all and deliver something nobody else is doing – authoring tools that non-programmers can utilize to do sophisticated kinds of media rich, highly interactive mobile based contextually aware on-line experiences. They think of it as the Instagram of Authoring. The Interface authoring tool environment would be utilized by Interface authors to create customized, one-off Apps for their clients. Each client could have their own instructional materials, interactive tools or interfaces, on-line media and on-demand relevant information – crafted exactly to their needs.

During my visit to Cupertino, California, I had the opportunity to visit WittyParrot who optimizes efficiency of sales staff’s communication with customers, be it email, document/presentation creation or social media outreach. They enable companies with large and small sales staff to speak with one voice. Gil Pitney demonstrates how Texas Instruments’ Keystone II ARM+DSP multicore SoCs are ideal for “green supercomputing”, performing demanding High Performance Computing (HPC) workloads at lower power. TI’s Mulicore SDK for HPC (MCSDK-HPC) examples show how TI’s OpenCL driver and the OpenMP 4.0 Accelerator Model allow demanding scientific computations to be easily offloaded and distributed to the 8 DSP cores.
Acer’s first ARM Powered Chromebook, to be released from around October onward, the price starts around $279/279€ for the basic HD 2GB RAM version, $20/20€ more for 4GB instead of 2GB RAM, going up to $379/379€ for the version with FHD display and 4GB RAM.
Toshiba releases their 13.3″ FHD Glossy 4GB RAM at $349/349€ and HD Matte 2GB RAM $249/249€ Chromebooks, based on Intel Celeron processors, they are thinner, 200gr lighter, better designed and with a battery life of 9hr for the FHD and 11.5hr for the HD one, where Google says the battery life can be enhanced even further with software update.
