Henry’s Toshiba IFA 2013 Booth Tour
My 11-year-old cousin Henry from Denmark walks around the Toshiba booth at IFA 2013, testing out the new Toshiba Tegra4 tablets, checking out the latest Toshiba 4K Upscaling Blu-ray player, Windows 8 touch-screen devices and more.
Lenovo Vibe X, MT6589T ultra-slim 1080p Smartphone
The Vibe X has a Full HD 5″ screen and is one the smallest devices with a 5″ screen. The Vibe X has a polycarbonate design that looks like metal. The vibe X has a 5mp front camera which is good for self portraits. The Vibe X has the latest Mediatek 6589T processor at 1.5ghz and 2gb of ram. Unfortunately the device has no removable battery and a fixed 16gb of storage. Lenovo puts their own custom user interface on top Android 4.2 similar to MIUI in that it removes the app drawer called Lenovo Launcher. The Vibe X Should be available in China in October and outside of China in December and the price is yet to be announced.

Toshiba W30t 13.3″ Laptop and Tablet Hybrid with Detachable Screen
The first product shown was a Toshiba W30t which is a hybrid laptop and tablet with a detachable screen. The W30t runs on the Windows 8 platform. Similar to other laptop hybrids the W30t keyboard docks includes an additional battery and can achieve up to 10 hours of battery life with the dock plugged in and 5 hours with it removed. The W30t has a 13.3″ touchscreen with an unspecified “HD” (probably 1366×768) resolution. Unlike other tablets and ultrabooks the W30t doesn’t have a ssd and instead has a conventional hard drive. The product comes with either Intel Core processors or AMD APU’s. The price should be 750 USD starting price for the Toshiba and even less with an AMD processor. Expect a Q4 2013 release.
Cambrios is revolutionizing the touch screen industry, interview with their CMO
One of the revolutionary new touch screen technologies is created by Cambrios, it’s their ClearOhm® Silver Nanowires, that is now the leading candidate for replacing ITO in touch applications and making strides also in OLED lighting, Organic Photo Voltaic cells, electronic displays and others. At IFA, I interviewed Sri Peruvemba who was very excited about the prospects for the technology. Cambrios ClearOhm technology is replacing ITO not only in applications where ITO cannot play (large monitors, All-In-One computers and upcoming flexible/unbreakable tablets, phones and other devices) but also in applications like tablets and laptops and mobile phones where ITO is dominant. They already have many products in the field (see my video with Cambrios from Computex in Taiwan) and are expecting more tier one design wins to be announced in the near future. Already it’s public that companies like Samsung, Nissha are investors in Cambrios ClearOhm, that the worlds biggest touch screen maker TPK is building a new factory to build Cambrios ClearOhm based touch screens and that Hitachi is also a customer. The ClearOhm product has better transmission than ITO on film, has better conductivity (since silver conducts 100 times better than Indium), is made on flexible plastic material that is 40% thinner and 40% lighter than traditional touch screens, can enable flexible touch screens that ITO cannot since it is brittle, and it is very rugged. The Silver Nanowires from Cambrios is almost invisible in the touch screen, I could not see any pattern or moire that you would see with other technologies like metal mesh and ITO. Also the Cambrios CMO says that they are price competitive even with inferior technologies, that is amazing. During my interview I examined the touch sensors and could not see any pattern visibility. This is why they are winning new business. How fast Cambrios ClearOhm is going to take over the whole worldwide touch panel market is unsure, Cambrios says that they can produce enough silver nanowire material to be in all 1 Billion smartphones to be sold in 2014 if the markets and if the touch screen device producers demand it. I would definitely like to see hundreds of millions of cheaper, lighter, flexible/unbreakable plastics based Cambrios ClearOhm based Smartphone and Tablet designs invade the whole worldwide market as soon as next year!
My 11-year old cousin Henry at the Samsung IFA 2013 Booth Tour
Henry is my cousin from Denmark, he likes technology a lot and has started his own video-blog at http://youtube.com/techtothepeoplevideo. Here’s his first time attending any consumer electronics show, he took an Easyjet from Copenhagen to hang around the IFA trade show with me. In the next days, I will post a few more of his booth tours, seeing IFA 2013 from his perspective. Henry watches a lot of the tech news on the web every day and I think he knows pretty much everything about all devices being released. I’ll use him as my assistant here at IFA when I don’t know a product name, screen resolution, special feature or maybe even the processor.

Shenzhen Tena RK3188 HDMI Stick Factory Tour
This videos show the process of manufacturing a RK3188 HDMI stick. The Rk3188 features lower temperatures and greater stability. Shenzhen Tena is one of the close partners of Rockchip in optimizing and implementing the latest Rockchip processors for mass market HDMI Sticks to be sold worldwide. In the tour of the factory the manufacturing as well as the test of the Android mini pc is shown such as the different machines that are used to add components. Though much of the manufacturing process is automated, some of it is done by hand in order to add specific components like the female micro usb and male HDMI out. The process of installing Android is demonstrated and it is simply done through a computer and is then tested out. Overall the manufacturing process is a mixed one involving both hands and machines.

$31 3.5″ 400×240 Spreadtrum SC6820 1Ghz ARM Cortex-A5, world’s cheapest dual-sim 2G/EDGE Android phone
Here’s the world’s cheapest Android phone (that I can find thus far). We’re now approaching the sub-$30 pricing. Yup, $30, Android, capacitive 3.5″. Not 3G though, you get dual-sim 2G/EDGE modem at that price. If the 3.5″ screen is too small, you can get 4″ for $36 (maybe 480×320 or same 400×240, I need to check), or even 4.5″ for $45 (I think WVGA, I need to test and confirm), thus the Spreadtrum ARM Cortex-A5 system-on-chip solution with dual-sim 2G/EDGE support may compete well with the MediaTek MT6515 in that 2G/EDGE space. Let me know if you know which platform is more interesting in terms of reaching the world’s cheapest yet still usable Android phone target. We may already have reached the sub-$25 for an Android phone price now today, although it may surely be reached by the end of this year. Where can we go next year? Sub-$25 3G Android phones and sub-$15 2G Android phones? I bought 3 of these world’s cheapest phones, to use as my dual-sim roaming phone to keep my home SIMs active while I’m traveling, let me know what you would like me to test with those. The calling quality isn’t amazing, that’s one thing, but phone calls work. Wi-Fi works fine thus I can feed fast data to them from my 3G phone that does a portable hotspot if I want.

$62 4.3″ WVGA MT6572 256MB RAM, cheapest nice 4.3″ dual-sim 3G phone in the world
MediaTek MT6572 is the new low-cost 3G smartphone platform. Here’s the cheapest Samsung Galaxy 44-mini clone that I could find, this one with just 256MB RAM and 256MB ROM, you can expand storage with MicroSD card. This store also sells a clone of the HTC One. Thus you can get pretty decent 3G dual-sim phones for around $60-70 now all over China and exporting worldwide. I’m now testing this $62 MT6572 256MB RAM phone to see if I can replace my Galaxy Nexus with it and so that I understand better what the limitations are with having only 256MB RAM/ROM on ANdroid 4.2 with the MediaTek MT6572.
1080p MT6589T 5″ $199 and 6.5″ $238 high-end MediaTek phones out of Shenzhen
Here are the two highest-end MediaTek phones I could find, on the fastest MediaTek MT6589T quad-core “turbo” MediaTek platform. Both have 1080p resolution screens (perhaps from LG) run from the MT6589T processor. One U650 a 6.5″ screen and the P5005 has a 5″ IPS screen. The price of the P5005 is 199 USD retail in China. The price of U650 is 238 USD. The U650 also has 2gb ram option and 32gb storage option. Both devices feature removable batteries and Dual 3G+ SIM Card slots.
$77 MT6572 4.3″ WVGA Galaxy S4-mini clone and $80 MT6572 5″ WVGA Galaxy S4-clone
Here are two now very popular low-cost dual-sim 3G Samsung Galaxy S4/S4-mini clones for sale now all over China based on the new low-cost MT6572 Dual-core ARM Cortex-A7 from MediaTek. One was based on the regular Samsung Galaxy S4 with a 5″ screen the other was based on the S4 mini with a 4.3″ 854×480 screen. Both devices use a Mediatek MT6572. They both have 512MB RAM and 4GB Nand flash memory.
