Geniatech ATV1800 Enjoy TV Quad Core Box does 4K video on AmLogic M802 Set-top-box on new KKTV $1100 55″ 4K LCD TV

Posted by – November 28, 2013

In China, the 55″ 4K TV now sells for $1100!!!!!!!! Dreams come true! We’re all about to get a 4K TV (this one is the Konka KKTV LED55K60U). Android Set-top-box leader Shenzhen Geniatech shows me here their ATV1800 on AmLogic Quad-core M802 with Eight-core Mali-450 to actually playback 4K video over HDMI. This is the beginning of the Ultra HD future, on Android Box, here beautifully showing off this amazingly affordable new Konka KKTV LED55K60U 55″ 4K TV sold for only $1100 all over China!!!! The trick of course is how we in the future will get 4K video contents, the trick I think is to stream it all from the web. I believe most movies of this last century are or can be digitized and made available in 4K streaming as soon as movie studios and cinemateques around the world make the 4K version of all 35mm-sourced or often 4K-digital (for movies filmed in the last 5 or so years) movies available. How much bandwidth does one need for good 4K video streaming? My guess is 20mbitps may be enough, even less sometimes if the 4K comes from YouTube and Netflix, while a good 4K streaming provider should scale above 20mbitps if your home Internet connection for example has 50mbitps, 100mbitps downstream speed or above.

$50 Merrii HummingBird Kit Allwinner A20 Development Board and PCB Design House Tour

The Merrii Hummingbird Kit is a cheap $50 Allwinner A20 Development Board, with Android 4.2.2 and Linux 3.4 currently available officially. It has two USB hosts, an OTG, Gigabit Ethernet, line in, HDMI output. The Hummingbird motherboard which is only slightly larger than a credit card. It has all the basic functions of a PC when connected TV and to a keyboard/mouse, it can support things like spreadsheets, word processing, games, HD videos and more.

Merrii provides a forum for Hummingbird enthusiasts, developers to share advancements developed for the system, the latest information of the A20 Hummingbird system will also be released through the forum.

Users can download the official firmwares (Android 4.2.2 and Linux 3.4) separately by PhoenixSuit tool to burn to hummingbird development system, while Merrii also will provide Android and Linux SDK for enthusiasts to research.

The Linux System GUI provided by Merrii is based on Qt 4.7.3 graphics library written, the function of this program is for individual system tests of a variety of OS resource. As we all know, Android OS is a very excellent OS, but the drawback is system structure is very large, it will consume more hardware resource and start slowly. Compared to Android, A20 Hummingbird Linux system will consume less hardware resources, start quickly and can run smoothly at a lower configuration and less cost. And if the user wants to do dedicated system rather than just a APK, then they can choose Linux, but the disadvantage is likely to develop cycle is relatively longer.

Linux GUI of hummingbird system is written by Qt, Qt is a development framework of cross-platform C + + GUI application which developed by Trolltech in 1991. It can develop GUI program and non-GUI program, such as console tools and servers, the program can be run on Windows, MAC OS X, Linux \ X11, embedded Linux because of cross-platform, hummingbird Qt is running on the embedded Linux.Based on this system,it can be applied to video surveillance, POS, advertising machine, automotive system and other fields. Linux UI interface as following,

Due to the expansion interfaces of hummingbird development system are much more than some other similar products, and it has got global high attention. Thus making it very powerful, rich social environment and market value. the more people participate, the more rapid development, the greater the potential market, followed by the more purposes. Currently, besides the children’s education above-mentioned, it also can be used as basic computer, home theater HD player etc.As following:
• Multimedia player
• PlayStation
• IPTV
• Emulation box
• Auto PC
• Car GPS
• smart robot
• Server
• Electronic Album
• remote surveillance
• Home alarm apparatus / automation system

Samsung Wide IO Memory Interface for the faster and lower power ARM Processors of the future

Posted by – November 21, 2013

Memory bandwidth is one of the most important features in an SoC to get performance. Here presenting Samsung’s new memory architecture, possibly (my guess) to be used in Exynos6 (64bit) possibly at 20nm or perhaps even 14nm even, Samsung talks about their upcoming Wide-IO faster Memory Interface architecture for future ARM Processors to input and output much faster memory bandwidth. To run the same workload, it can use 60-70% less power of the memory plus memory interface power within the SoC, which is a large part of the power consumption within an ARM SoC, Samsung is ready with the technology. The business is about the timing, they are aiming for the best timing to introduce this technology. Provides for example 17gbit/s memory bandwidth, allowing to increase memory bandwidth possibly above 100gbit/s, to be confirmed as better technology is implemented. The history of LP-DDR is to increase the frequency to increase memory bandwidth, but with Samsung’s Wide-IO memory design, they can increase the memory lines instead and thus achieve much better memory bandwidth, possibly running 2-3x faster memory bandwidth at the same frequency, perhaps something like 50gbit/s easily. The demand for the memory bandwidth for smartphone devices will surpass memory bandwidth for the traditional desktop PC.

Samsung Exynos5420 HMP big.LITTLE demo

Posted by – November 21, 2013

Samsung shows HMP big.LITTLE mode working on the Exynos5420, Heterogeneous Multi Processing means that you can manage the 8 big.LITTLE cores independently and use them all at the same time. Showing HMP mode achieving a higher benchmark result over IKS process switching mode on the same CPU and on the same exact tablet hardware. Even being able to do full Octa Core Exynos5420 CPU and the full 6-core Mali-T628 GPU performance using renderscript at the same time heterogeneously achieving the maximum performance and at the same time also improving battery life when doing the same task. Showing here some advanced photo editing app using renderscript to optimize performance of that type of app.
