ApusOne ARM Processor platform for cheap Android Laptops and Tablets

ApusOne provides ARM based SoC for cheap Laptops, Tablets and set-top-boxes. They are demonstrating their platform running Android and Windows CE. The Apus One MAP100 processor decodes 720p at 300mhz and next generation Apus One MAP200 processor can decode 1080p/i at 800mhz. Bill of Material for an Android Laptop with 720p playback is $70, the 4.8″ Android Tablet would be $70 and the set-top-box is only $30.

They worked on it since my IFA 2009 video, now the design of this Samsung ARM9 based 4.8″ Android tablet is closer to final. It seems responsive, fast, they are showing it with the Google Marketplace integrated (probably a hack for now) and they are basically saying that it is final and ready to be shipped to distributors.

This 7″ Tablet will have a $199 MSRP with built-in ATSC and a plan to have the Google Marketplace integrated. They are also saying that they will provide ARM Cortex based Chrome OS netbook.

It has both a 6″ e-ink screen and a 3.5″ capacitative touch screen LCD that runs Android. So the Android screen is thus able to do all kinds of advanced things and interact with contents to send over the the e-ink screen.

This video about the cheap Chromium OS Tablet revolution was a bit too good (smooth Chromium on ARM Powered device!!), so I have been asked to remove it for now and edit some parts out and upload a new video.

I hope to get an edited version of it back online at some point. Or perhaps they will agree to let me film new video about it soon.

Chumby powers the Sony Dash (interview with Chumby)

Interview with Steve Tomlin of Chumby about how they have worked with Sony to make the Sony Dash. Chumby has been making Flash based widget systems for embedded Linux powered small screen tablet devices that are not meant to be put in the pocket but that are meant for the home. On your office desk, in the kitchen, in the living room, you can activate any among thousands of widgets that automatically scroll informations, videos, audio from the Internet. You can use it to wake up to music from Last.fm, Pandora, with videos from Youtube, RSS feeds, your latest Facebook comments, IM, it can alert you when you get new emails and more.

Sony Dash at CES 2010

This was probably one of the most interesting announcements at the Sony CES press conference. It has a pretty nice 7″ capacitative touch screen, USB host and $199 is an okay price! I’d really like clever USB accessories such as somehow a detector in a pillow and have the Dash wake you up at the end of your sleep cycles instead of in the middle, wake you up with the most relevant informations from your email, IM, social networks, RSS feeds and using videos from Youtube or music from Last.fm or Pandora.
