CLEARink Displays ePaper Reflective wins Best in Show at DisplayWeek 2017
CLEARink Displays Chairman and CEO, Frank Christiaens and VP of Engineering, Scott Ferguson, won “Best of Show” at SID DisplayWeek 2017 in Los Angeles. CLEARink Displays works on the principle of Total Internal Reflection (TIR) which occurs on the top plane of the display, when light is reflected back creating white state images. The top plane also encompasses an electrophoretic (ePaper) mechanism where an applied voltage causes black particles to rise to the top and cover the bottom surface of the film and absorb light, thus creating the black state. The bottom plane is a TFT substrate similar to what is used in the LCD industry, the backplane allows for pixel formation. This technology has all the benefits of electronic paper including low power, sunlight readability, extremely thin and light and flexible plus the added benefit of lower cost color and video. The CLEARink demos are running video at 30frames/second, some of the demos were hybrid static text and dynamic video on the same page. The company said that they are targeting eSchoolbooks, Wearables, Mobile Devices etc but they can also make products for Electronic Shelf Labels/IoT as well as Signage displays. CLEARink is in trial production in a LCD fab and will have samples ready for the customer in the next few months with mass production in Q1 2018.

Onyx E Ink Laptop and 10.3″ Flexible E Ink Mobius Reader, Onyx Typewriter and Onyx 10.3″ Boox Buddy
Onyx Typewriter has up to 25 days battery life in use (up to 50+ days battery life in standby according to Onyx), it is the world’s first E Ink Laptop. The screen can be perfect to type texts outdoors, during the day in the sunlight, in the park, on your boat, on your balcony, on the beach, to get some natural sunlight while doing work! Of course the E Ink Laptop cannot replace your existing laptop, this is why a smart UI is going to be required. Onyx Typewriter runs Android so a smart app/instance could potentially make this great.
Onyx 10.3″ BOOX Buddy from Onyx (at 7min27sec in this video) is one of the most amazing E Ink devices that I have even seen, amazingly light, thin, the E Ink display is flexible! Flush with the bezels, has a digitizer annotations support and capacitive touch, extremely beautiful and check how quick the stylus input is, it feels nearly like writing with a pen on paper!
These new awesome Onyx devices are two of the coolest new devices in the world. Here are just two, but there is more (check my other Onyx video featuring Onyx BOOX Max Carta 13.3″ 2200×1650 Flexible E Ink device here) could enter mass production and be released in the months to come, when they can be perfected for release. Hopefully the price for these will be affordable, that might depend on the popularity and demand for these special E Ink displays, as the highest cost of these devices is the E Ink display and E Ink prices their displays cheaply only if the volumes are going to be big enough.

QuirkLogic Quilla is the world’s largest Connected eWriter, on 42″ E Ink electronic paper replicating the familiar feel of paper and pen, bringing a more natural and smart collaborative whiteboard for companies and schools that want to provide sunlight readable, bi-stable, paper-like eWriting, a display that enables a different athmosphere, a different interior design for the brainstorming and strategical collaborative space in companies, enabling colleagues to get inspired in the brightest room with most natural light, on a most comfortable for reading display. With Quilla, users can walk up, grab a pen, and easily scribble out ideas, actions, and plans without hitting setup hurdles and quickly pick up where they left off in an instant. The QuirkLogic digital writing system consists of portable, always-on inking devices that go beyond space and location boundaries. Teams are no longer tied to conference rooms that have equipment anchored to a wall and instead can make better use of spaces designed for informal, ad-hoc interaction. The eWriter’s easy on/off mounts, light weight (22lbs/10kg), and battery operation enable workers to go wireless with the device and take it to any workspace. Also, remote participants can contribute and interact with content in real-time through centralized library and workbook sharing, enabled by an intelligent connected “inking” ecosystem that does the heavy lifting behind the scenes, keeping it simple for the users.

E Ink for Productivity, Onyx N96ML, 9.6″ E Ink Android Reader with digitizer
One of the potential segment for devices that I am quite excited about, is the E Ink based large screen connected stylus touch e-reader. Provided it gets the perfectly smart implementation, it can unlock a world of being more productive reading and annotating all kinds of texts, in all kinds of fields of study, professionalism, creativity and curiosity. Reading on an E Ink display has already been proven by Kindle to be an awesome experience. Make use of customized Android for E Ink devices, WiFi and Bluetooth, and the potential for this device can be really great and for me is quite exciting.
