Sure they can remove animations and introduce other optimizations for e-ink, but it’s really about the hardware OEMs putting in the necessary work to make display drivers that work for these kind of devices, instead of just using the e-ink display company supplied ones. For a device to work well it needs all apps to work to a reasonable level on the e-ink screen. That won’t happen without the driver development. Look at the work done as part of the Earl development if you want to see what I mean https://vine.co/v/OTtFIlbQ06q

Google should have done this work years ago. Can’t blame a small Chinese company who just struggles to make something innovative. Google should have made Android for E Ink since years ago. Having a smartphone with 1 month battery life should be a priority for Google. First I filmed E Ink Android phones was before 2012: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fTbkNld0sHE

There should also be Google supported Android E Ink e-readers to compete with Kindle. Google is just sleeping.

The e-ink display driver on this device looks to have had absolutely no work done on it at all to cope with the fast updates and animations that are required for an android phone/tablet e-ink experience to be good. It’s great that the device appears to be allowing any app to use the e-ink back screen, but without a smart display driver, the experience will be terrible.

I checked on Aliexpress and Alibaba but didn’t find 6″ or more display working with Raspberry Pi Zero. It could be a revolutionary media panel for Home Automation…

End products like Joan Assistant (https://joanassistant.com/) are still expensive and Kindle White paper is hard to hack…
