This summer, Archos will release this Touchscreen E Ink Smartwatch, running an E Ink optimized UI to display your smart notifications through the upcoming Archos Smartwatch App for Bluetooth 4/3 Smartphones on Android and iOS. Sunlight readability, always-on and battery life should be great. Archos also will release their non-touch E Ink Smartwatch for $129 a couple or so months before this one.
At CES 2014, I interviewed John LeMoncheck, President and CEO of Cambrios, in their suite. Cambrios’ silver nanowire material brand named ClearOhm® is doing extremely well in the market, they are replacing ITO in touch screens. Since the last time I spoke to Cambrios at Ceatec, they have announced more design wins for mobile phones, tablets, AIO and monitors. Cambrios recently announced partnership with 3M and prior to that they had announced a joint venture with TPK (world’s largest touch screen maker) and Nissha. At the suite, they also demonstrated products from Lenovo, 3M, UniDisplay, LG, Karbonn, eTurbotouch, NEC, Nissha and others. They also showed silver nanowire coated film rolls from Hitachi and Okura. Clearly they are winning business in touch, they just announced that they have tripled their manufacturing capacity, their customers like 3M, TPK have a lot of capacity as well. John also mentioned that they are enabling wearable devices, flexible OLED, solar cells and 3D TV.

After showing how the Smart Home is going to be done by the industry, Archos introduces simple and cheap smartwatch systems, all are Bluetooth and the basic idea is you pair it with your Android or iOS phone, you install the Archos Smartwatch management app on your phone to select which notifications you want to vibrate and alert you on your Smartwatch. That’s nearly about it. The E Ink and memory LCD units last for 1-2 weeks on a battery while the touchscreen backlit LCD unit lasts 2-3 days on its battery. They charge with a dock which you can have next to your bed. The idea is for the Smartwatch to be a companion to your big-ass phone in your pocket, thus mainly everything is about Archos Smartwatches putting Smart notifications on your wrist.
Tour of the E Ink CES 2014 booth, featuring all the latest coolest E Ink devices on the market and prototypes. The E Ink device that I think is the “Best of CES” is the 13.3″ Sony DPT-S1, the biggest and the lightest ultra-readable 13.3″ touch device in the world (currently only released in limited few-thousand unit trials in Japan) uses the 13.3″ 1200×1600 Mobius E Ink display with protective film instead of glass for it to be ultra-thin at 6.8mm and weigh only 358grams and to also offer a better stylus experience. Aloso featuring the latest E Ink for Smartwatches, thus keeping the display always on, which is important for a Smartwatch. Featuring new giant E Ink clocks to put on walls, E Ink signage displays, the latest E Ink e-readers on the market and more.
Archos presents sub-$200 4G LTE phones, running on the new Qualcomm MSM8926 with 150mbitps LTE support, 1GB RAM, Android 4.4 coming, the display is 5″ 1280x720p for the $249/229€ Archos 50 Helium and 4.5″ 854×480 on the $199/199€ Archos 45 Helium. Both to be released next month. This is attractive in countries where you can get 4G contracts at sub $20/20€ per month, and even have those sometimes included for free on the ISP home broadband contract, people doing pre-paid instead of 2-year contracts want cheap affordable phones like these to include LTE, and Archos sells some for as low as $99/99€ with their 3G-only MT6572 based Archos 40 Titanium.
Archos releases a full range of Smart Home Bluetooth 4.0 low energy sensors, cameras, fitness band, scale, blood pressure monitor, movement sensor, temperature meters, GPS/3G tracker (for dogs, cars, bicycles etc), and a bunch more. Archos designed a special 7″ Tablet with modified Bluetooth 4.0 to synchronize seamlessly with up to 30 devices at the same time (while the normal Bluetooth 4 spec limits devices to connect to 4 devices). Archos is going to sell their range of Smart Home and Smart Self devices in batches, and where users will be able to buy separate pieces as they wish, buy extra smart plugs, buy extra sensors, cameras, etc as you need more, at prices from around $20 retail per device. Flat batteries last about a couple of years in each of these devices, they don’t need to be connected, they all work wirelessly. Archos also presents their really cool Android and iOS app that enables users to program their smart home, selecting conditions, programs, things you want your smart home to do automatically. For example send you a picture to your phone when there is movement in your home, turn off lights when you exit the room, wake you up earlier if the weather is really bad. Archos kind of invented the ARM Powered Tablet, introducing it (on my initial video-blog posting) in 2004 running Qtopia Linux. Then copied by Android and everyone. Archos also introduced the 7″ Tablet in 2006, years before the Nexus 7, Archos was the initial Android tablet maker since 2009, this is now Archos showing the industry what is next.
Pipo is showing their latest tablets at CES 2014, including now an Intel Baytrail Windows 8 tablet, 9.7″ Retina RK3188 with 3G Ultrastick, Full HD 1920×1200 7″ RK3188 with 3G built-in is finally ready. The trend Pipo is for more and more of the tablets to be with phone call functionality.
The One Laptop Per Child shows their latest quad-core RK3188 Tablets, 7″ retailing for $149 and 10.1″ retailing for $199, those retail prices can subsidize the One Laptop Per Child foundation, bringing tablets and laptops to more children in the developing world as soon as possible. The XO Tablets ship with OLPC’s latest UI replacement for Android 4.4 kitkat. Parents can unlock that UI and use the tablets as Nexus-like unlocked tablets also. When are all the 1 Billion children in the world going to have full access to education using technology?

James Bruce talks newly announced ARM Mali-T720 for Entry-level and new ARM Mali-T760 for High-end devices. ARM Mali-T720 brings GPU Compute OpenGL ES 3.0 to the entry level smartphone in the next 18-24 months. AmLogic now ships Mali-T450 in their new M802 chip. James Bruce talks further of what ARM can do for the user experience, talks designing benchmarks to measure the performance of the user experience vs certain benchmarks measuring things that aren’t relevant to the user experience. The ARM Architecture ecosystem is amazing, for example, in Q2 2013, there were more ARM Cortex-A5 devices shipped than all x86 PC/Laptops combined in that quarter.
Toradex shows their Apalis T30 module is a module computer with a Nvidia Tegra 3 processor with 2gb of ram. The price of the Apalis T30 is 169 USD individually. The Appalis T30 can be connected to a desktop motherboard with a desktop Nvidia graphics card and can be used with a desktop linux environment with CUDA support. Nvidia Tegra 4 is not available for embedded use so Tegra 5 will be the next platform available.
This video is an informative and interesting interview with Fan Yang and Arne Weber, the owners of faytech ltd, discussing the history and evolution of their years in the touchscreen industry and their passion to build the best products possible. Beginning over 8 years ago with starting to sell touchscreen monitors in Germany, they set up a importing business based in Germany which has grown to be one of Europe’s largest distributors of touchscreen devices. In 2008, Arne and Fan began to travel to China to find better suppliers, and ended up moving to Shenzhen and starting their own manufacturing company. Four short years later, faytech has over 70 employees, 15K sq. ft. of space, producing over 2000 touch screen monitors and touchscreen PCs a month, and achieving ISO certification in 2013.
Geniatech engineer shows how they support dual-booting to some basic Linux from the SD card on several of the Geniatech Android Set-top-boxes, going back to their single-core AmLogic M3 based Set-top-boxes and also to their new ones. Geniatech tries or wants to provide everything open source and unlock their Set-top-boxes so for users who want a cheap ARM Powered Linux box, they can use Geniatech for that also.
Pipo shows their Pipo M8HD 10.1″ Full HD Rockchip RK3188 Tablet, 2GB RAM, started to ship around October 2013, competes with Nexus 10 and the price is about half of Nexus 10 and about 30% of the latest iPad. 5 megapixel back camera with flash. The multi-window Android user interface option also comes included, being developed by Rockchip. The possible retail price is $169€.
