Charbax, please know that I have actually been on the ground in several developing countries for an extended period of several years. I didn’t just visit for a few weeks then leave.
I’m saying that your dream is already becoming true right in front of you! I’m not sure how you are blind to see that what you wanted and predicted would take place is already happening! There is no need to push something that is already here!
Through technology, the poor are gaining access to information on a scale that has never been seen before in the history of mankind! Give it about four more years for this newfound access to mature (if you can’t see the results already!).
OLPC could simply make educational Android apps (or educational videogames) for kids and release them for free. What is taking them so long? Why is it that thousands of free Android educational apps (and videogames) have beat OLPC to the punch?
We’ve got Rosetta Stone on Android, for example, yet OLPC hasn’t released anything at all on the Android market. Only overpriced and outdated vaporware.

If the OLPC really had become outdated and not needed, that would have been fine, and that would have been a success for the OLPC. The fact is 99% of children in the world don’t get proper education through technology today. The fact is children don’t get proper education neither on the laptops and especially not on the tablets and smartphones. You may be as enthusiastic as you want about the smartphones, the fact is they are not solving the giant education problem worldwide, far from it. So there is absolutely a need for projects like OLPC to push the industry in the right direction, and do this sooner rather than later. It’s actually quite urgent, the children are growing up dumb. Both in rich and in poor countries, the opportunity of using technology in education is just plain simply being ignored by the politics and it is even being cynically slowed down by people like you who spend their energy attacking projects like the OLPC that at least make attempts and improving the situation in the industry.

Yes, sub-$30 Android smartphones are available in developing countries (though not widely) — but they are almost unusable and not worth writing about. The $60 Jellybean Android smartphones are a steal, VERY usable, and often come with 1 month of free internet, $60 of free phone credit, free sim card, etc. with the purchase of the phone — no contract. The $60 BMobile smartphone widely available in Guatemala, for example, is fully functional (4-inch screen with working GPS, Wi-Fi, 3G modem, Wi-Fi hotspot capabilities, Bluetooth, front and rear-facing cameras, removable battery, sd card slot, etc.). Mothers often use these phones and let their children play videogames on them, etc. That is called sharing.
The One Laptop Per Child concept became outdated and illogical several years ago as the world has moved on to smartphones and tablets. A newer $199 XO “education” tablet for the extreme poor also doesn’t make any sense, in my opinion, since only Intel is more greedy. $199 is the price of a cutting edge Nexus 7 (2013).
I’m also NOT convinced that more sunlight readability is something of importance (compared to what is already available on standard smartphones). I have lived in developing countries along the equator (where the sun is fierce) for several years and never once encountered the problem of reading in sunlight — it’s mostly tourists and foreigners who read under direct sunlight. Their primary objective is often simply to relax and take in sunlight — reading is secondary. The blazing sun is not a luxury to the locals because they already get enough of it.
In any case, too much sun is not healthy for the skin.
Charbax, you are far more likely to encounter a scenario in the developing world where a smartphone is your primary source of lighting because there is no electricity! ….either from a power outage, electric bill not being paid, inadequate lighting in general, etc.)! You mention reading in sunlight a lot but you never mention reading without lighting in general (which is a more realistic problem for the poor). Smartphones and tablets already solve this problem because they provide their own lighting. I couldn’t tell you how many times I have used my tablet, computer, or smartphone to read in the dark — either from necessity or for convenience.
Never once in my life have I ever had a problem reading in the sunlight while trying to learn — to check a text message, maybe, but never to read and learn. You’re underestimating how easy it is to create or find shade.
A more realistic scenario in developing countries is for your smartphone to be your primary source of lighting — occasionally, your only source of lighting.

1. OLPC halved the average price of laptops for the whole world through forcing the avenue of the netbook. Through also extending AMD and VIA’s low cost x86 involvement.
2. OLPC extended Windows XP and forced an unbloated Windows 7 to come and save the world from bloated Windows Vista and that path that Wintel was on to keep increasing bloat and force people into buying more expensive laptops and desktops all the time.
3. OLPC created the first major Linux Laptop deployment, destroying the Microsoft and Intel monopoly on the Laptop platform. Preparing the ground for Chrome OS and Android.
4. OLPC now just wants to help at guiding the Tablet market into becoming more useful for work and education, this is to push the Android Tablet ecosystem towards more and better education software, pushing the form factors towards being better tools for productivity. This doesn’t mean that the Laptop is finished, it just now is about pushing for usability and optimizing for better education of all the kids.

And the price of Android smartphones are now sub-$30 in developing countries, not $60. If these smartphones can enable kids to learn anything they want all over the world, that would be great, but they don’t quite achieve that yet. They could, but it requires some tweaking on the usability and most importantly it requires Governments focus on porting all knowledge, all information, all methods for education over onto the Android and Chrome platform. It’s a big work that is required, but it’s not much bigger than the normal effort Governments are putting into the education sector, they just have to do it the correct way and port all curriculums and all teaching methods onto the digital platform. Also hardware for these cheap devices have to be built for developing countries where power is not yet always available, where power often costs more than connectivity, and that sunlight readability is a very important requirement because learning requires a lot of reading.
