GeoCV 3D capture to virtual reality

Posted by – February 16, 2016

Based in Moscow, Russia, GeoCV is a software platform aiming to bring VR-calibre 3D modelling to the mass market. The highlight is the hardware-agnostic platform, implemented currently on a Project Tango device that is used to show a real estate company’s website with a home being displayed. GeoCV is looking beyond, to implement their platform on next-generation phones so that shooting in 3D is the same as shooting with a 2D camera (without special hardware.)

It can also live-stream the real-time stiched 360 degree 4K video or 6 unstiched videos at a bitrate of up to 100Mbit per second. All this sounds awesome, but the price is above $2000. Here I try on the Nvidia VR experience using the latest Oculus Rift Crescent Bay prototype, connected by a cable to a Desktop computer with a powerful Nvidia Geforce 980 Ti GPU and running a quite advanced Engine animated video demo in a 1440p “smartphone type” head-mounted display. Nvidia explains what they are doing for Virtual Reality, this could be quite a fun and advanced immersive gaming and 360 video experience. The latest Oculus Rift has sensors on it with a tracker to be mounted on the wall, detecting where exactly you are moving your head in the room.

Finwe and vrAse show how the Smartphone-in-your-face powers the mass market virtual reality media of the future, it works!

Posted by – April 4, 2014

I discovered the awesomeness that are Finwe and vrAse which quite simply made me understand the whole VR segment for the first time. The idea that we will simply use our Smartphones and Tablets to power really advanced mass market heads-up augmented reality applications, this is awesome. There isn’t need for Facebook’s $2 Billion Oculus VR.

So you have been seeing all the news about Finwe and vrAse right here on ARMdevices.net consider that websites TheVerge, CNET and co don’t even know yet that this awesomeness exists.

vrAse: much better than Oculus VR

Posted by – March 25, 2014

This is the way to do VR. Using your latest Smartphone and the $100€ vrAse headset (€ prices always include 20% VAT!). Using your latest always-improving Smartphone display, sensors, processor, graphics, storage, connectivity and everything. Just insert your Smartphone into the $100 http://vrAse.com headset (successfully funded on Kickstarter, to be available this summer) and you transform your latest smartphone into an awesome virtual reality machine. I’ve tried it, and it’s awesome. Oculus VR and other similar dedicated VR headsets probably use standard smartphone components anyway, so why not just use the latest Smartphone in the vrAse headset? vrAse just focuses on providing good optics with two lenses, which can provide for 3D and 2D immersive virtual reality.

The vrAse finally justifies having 1080p and higher than 1080p resolution on your latest smartphone because it brings your smartphone display pixels up close to your eyes!

I think the killer app for vrAse (and for any other VR headsets) may actually be 360 degree panoramic immersive video (although the 360 video cameras are not yet available to the masses, but they may be imminent), as I filmed the 6K panoramic video demo on Nexus 5 in my Finwe.fi video of last month:

360° video panorama technology, a new experience! presented by Finwe.fi

Posted by – February 28, 2014

This is 360 video, presented by Finwe Ltd CEO Juha Kela. 360 video is a special video production technology that utilizes multiple cameras to produce a full spherical 360×180 degree video experience. Video from multiple sources is synchronized, fine tuned and stitched together with a software called Autopano Video and Autopano Giga by Kolor. Kolor also delivers solutions for 360 video hosting and playback on a PC and web browser. Web player is based on html5.

Finwe ltd has developed a movement and touch controlled 360 video player for mobile devices, called 360 VideoBall. In collaboration with Kolor, they also just released a pre-version of free Kolor Eyes Android player. Beyond that, mobile player can also be used with Kickstarter funded goggles vrAse. This cool gadget has lenses and a special frame that holds mobile phones inside. The mobile phone is then used as a movement controlled display device, producing a separate image for both eyes. There is now an equipment based on 6 GoPro’s in a 360×180 formation to shoot 360 3D videos, which was used as a demonstration in MWC. The experience is really stunning and the image quality is very good thanks to the high quality and resolution of mobile devices.

Finwe CEO Juha Kela also demonstrated a special custom technology that enables 6k 360 video playback on a mobile phone. Current devices support only 4k resolution, but with the special technology they developed devices can play back videos even with 8k resolution! With this solution, user can zoom into the video without losing the quality.

To be able to provide a full turn key solution for 360 video production and to support the marketing of the mobile 360 video player technology Juha Kela founded a company called FinCloud Ltd. FinCloud has already done number of multi camera productions and one of their productions, a 360 music video for Finnish band Apulanta is currently nominated in Spotify “Innovator of the Year” category in Emma Gaala. Emma Gaala is an annual event, which rewards the most significant players in the industry during a year.
