Nufront ARM Powered Laptops

10″ and 14″ Laptops with ARM Cortex-A9 and running Ubuntu presented by Nufront. After having shown development kits for a couple months, now they are showing these real laptop prototypes integrating their ARM Cortex-A9 Dual-core processors. This is a taste of future awesomeness from the ARM ecosystem soon enough powering all our laptops. Nufront is also showing a laptop prototype running their processor.

Will it be in iPad2? Will it be in Kindle4? Of course she can’t say anything about it, but I really hope so. Was Pixel Qi delayed a bit because of the success of the iPad slowing down potential investments in Netbook screens? How did they manage financing their startup through the economic turmoils of the past couple of years? Pixel Qi introduces a 7″ model that is going to be mass manufactured by CPT after February, after the Chinese new year celebrations. The 10.1″ 16/9 and the 9.7″ 4:3 screens also are due to be mass manufactured soon.

Microsoft shows full Windows for ARM Powered devices
Check this out. This is the full Windows on ARM platforms developed by Texas Instruments, Qualcomm and Nvidia. Microsoft demonstrates a recompiled version of Microsoft Office for ARM, some other apps, talks about how it will support all the apps on ARM, this is awesome.
Lenovo LePad Qualcomm Snapdragon Tablet U1 that docks in Intel core i5 laptop
The Lenovo ARM Powered tablet is $500 and the optional Intel laptop dock part is something like $800. Lenovo had shown this last year with a previous Snapdragon and Thunderbird’s customized Ubuntu Linux on the ARM part which I filmed then, but now they updated the ARM part to Android 2.2 on Qualcomm’s 8X50A is 1.3ghz 45nm processor (which they might upgrade to Qualcomm’s dual-core processor by the time this tablet comes out with Android Honeycomb), they say it’ll upgrade to Honeycomb, and it uses Lenovo’s LeAndroid UI layer (similar to LePhone UI that is available on the Chinese market, notice Paul Otelinni at Lenovo’s Aquanox party in the background of my last year’s LePhone video) as default home replacement.

Nufront ARM Cortex-A9 can run at 2Ghz for Desktop and Laptop usage

Beijing based Nufront is presenting their ARM Cortex-A9 processor which they plan to launch in commercial ARM Powered desktop and laptop solutions soon. Here are some demonstrations of it powering an Ubuntu 10.10 desktop and a Quake 3 game.
Chrome OS ARM Powered laptops could debut this month!
Inventec may be preparing to ship 60-70 thousand ARM Powered laptops running the Chrome OS laptop starting later this month according to Taiwan based rumor and fact website Digitimes.com. This may be the absolute demonstration of the shifting trend to come in laptops, where Intel and Microsoft will not be needed anymore and laptops can run ARM Cortex processors with fast I/O, good RAM, flash based storage, very thin and light form factors with very long battery runtime and instant boot, all running full Chrome web browser OS, one that loads all websites at full speed and provides fast web browsing.
Can the ARM Powered laptops run a web browser at full speed, this will be the start of the revolution, as full speed web browsing is the main performance requirement for a mass consumer laptop product. If an average consumer and experts are able to browse the Internet on the ARM Powered Chrome OS laptop at similar or better speed than current Intel Atom based laptops, then this should mean the success of this platform.

Which processor do you think is going to be used for Chrome OS ARM Powered laptops? Do you think ARM Cortex-A9 will be a requirement? How much RAM? And how do you think they achieve fast enough I/O bus speeds to provide for a full performance web browsing system? Do you think ARM Powered Chrome OS devices will provide a full Native Code, Flash, 3D, local storage and fast javascripts/ajax support that can be required?
My opinion: If they ship it for $199 out of any contracts, with a good ARM Cortex-A9, good RAM and I/O hardware design, preferably with the Pixel Qi dual-mode screen for upwards 30-60 hours of battery runtime on a super thin and light form factor, well then, I think this can only become hugely successful.

Mark Shuttleworth loves the Toshiba AC100
The CEO of Canonical, Mark Shuttleworth, highlighted ARM Servers by Smooth-stone and Tegra2 Powered Toshiba AC100 at his keynote speech at the Ubuntu Developer Conference. Hopefully Nvidia, Canonical people and the open source community will bring about full hardware acceleration for all aspects of Ubuntu 10.10 on this ARM Cortex-A9 laptop design.

In parallel with the Intel Developer Forum, just next to Intel’s event, some competitors are showing such nice things as this ARM Cortex A9 processor design and implementation by Chinese manufacturer Nufront, they say that final products with this could be on the market below $250 before Christmas with power consumption below 2W for the whole system. They plan this solution for low cost and low power Netbook and Desktop style products.

Toshiba AC-100 ARM Tegra2 Powered Android Laptop

This is probably so far the coolest looking ARM Powered laptop to be released broadly on the market. The first ARM Cortex A9 based laptop. Runs an optimized Android OS with custom web browser from Opera Mobile and I am guessing, the full Chrome browser for ARM may be able to run on this eventually as well. This laptop is being released right now for around 299€ or $299 with WiFi and a bit more for the version with built-in 3G modem.
