Interview with Milosch Meriac, ARM IoT Security Engineer and Dr. Rolf Lindemann, Nok Nok Labs Senior Director for Products, about how ARM and its partners such as Nok Nok Labs are providing secuity solutions for the Internet of Things market, after the DDOS attack running on IP Cameras and their DVRs of last week that shut down a large part of the US internet. They suggest to implement Password-less Authentication, secure and automatic firmware updates, virtualization and more.

Tour of the Allwinner showroom at China Sourcing Fair 2016, with Damien from the Allwinner Business Development group (industry insiders can contact him at Damien@allwinnertech.com), showing the latest products powered by Allwinner on the market, such as the Phoenix OS based Laptop, Double OS (dual UI of Android) for 2-in-1 market developed in partnership with the Phoenix OS team, the latest Android Marshmallow tablets, including the Aikun Morphus X300 powered by Allwinner. Here also are presented the latest Allwinner powered all-in-one VR devices starting with Allwinner A33 and support for A83T and A64 quad-core ARM Cortex-A53. Allwinner also shows some Smart Home IoT type products powered by Allwinner such as smart vacuum cleaner, smart home robot and smart wifi speaker (Amazon Alexa or Google Home possibly possible), talking about next year’s successor of the Allwinner A33 for the tablet market, which they might do on a lower nanometer to lower power consumption and optimize the low-cost Tablet market further. Allwinner shows some of their Phablets released in partnership with qualcomm, where Allwinner is helping to get shipped Qualcomm based LTE tablets on Snapdragon 200 and 400 series working with the design houses and factories in Shenzhen to get them done more. Allwinner has a big position in the auto market with after market smart Android powered smart mirrors, smart car dashboard and Smart car-dvr products which are quite popular in China, adding object recognition, car parking support, lane departure and car distance alerts and more. Allwinner is also in Drones with their camera chip, in E Ink Android based e-readers, smart speakers (with multi-room sync), and web-TV Karaoke tablets popular in the Chinese market.

Bluetooth SIG (Special Interest Group) have their own booth where they display products of their partner companies. Here we see the Meccano, a DIY kit robot controlled via Bluetooth off a device, BT beacons that are small in size with a battery life of a year (with a refresh every 3 seconds), and Texas Instruments’ 52 series board that allows one to run two protocols at once, amongst other things.

BenQ Smart Window, transparent, opaque, translucent..

BenQ demonstrates their smart window concept that allows a transparent pane to turn opaque on passing a current through it. The display room shown here also demonstrates their H.A.D.E.S. system, a network of devices that allows one to control window opacity, ceiling light intensity (lit by LEDs), and a privacy window that blocks light from outside but allows users from inside to see out. Power consumption for the prototype is 10mW/m^2.

$15 Pine64 Development Board on 64bit Allwinner A64 Quad-core ARM Cortex-A53


Pine64 is one of the most successful 64bit ARM development boards yet, raising $1.7 Million on Kickstarter, shipping to 36,781 backers, it’s released as a $15 development board, featuring the 64bit Allwinner A64 Quad-core ARM Cortex-A53 with ARM Mali400 MP2 GPU. Allwinner announces their partnership with Microsoft to get Windows 10 Azure IoT to run on this development board. It can also run several Linux, Android and more.

Open InterConnect Forum and IoTivity: defining IoT standards

David McCall of Intel introduces the Open InterConnect Consortium, which represents a range of standards that allow developers to program IoT devices while maintaining a certain level of security and compatibility. For example, the OIC interface defines protocols for IoT devices to talk to non-IoT devices, define software layers that work above hardware, etc. The OIC also sponsors IoTivity, an open source project run by the Linux Foundation that defines a communications framework. The OIC is supported by companies like Atmel, Dell, Samsung, Honeywell, and many others.

Parrot is a company that makes products ranging from car entertainment systems to UAVs. On display here is their Flower Power sensor, a device meant to be used in pots or the ground that collects nutritional information in the soil and transmits that wirelessly to a device, displayed on an app. 4 factors are measured “ sunlight, temperature, fertilizer and moisture “ and the company’s own database comprises of over 7000 plants with pre-defined paramters. It costs US$100 approx and runs on a single AAA battery that lasts 6 months.

BeeWi smart home products – lighting and water control

BeeWi is a French company specializing in smart home products. On display here are their range of Bluetooth (Low Energy spec) controlled lights, that can switch between colors and do not need a gateway unless the user wants to control them via the internet. Also on display is a remotely controlled water system. The bulbs cost between          EUR 19-41 while the optional Bluetooth gateway costs EUR 49. The presenter also discusses Mesh, a forthcoming Bluetooth technology that will allow range for up to 200 meters.

$20 Red Bear BLE Nano development board uses ARM mbed and Device Cloud Connector


At the ARM booth at Computex 2016, Shenzhen based Red Bear presents their $20 BLE Nano development board, the world’s smallest Bluetooth Low Energy development board using a Nordic Semiconductor nRF51822 16Mhz ARM Cortex-M0 SoC with 32KB RAM, 256KB Flash that supports BLE Central and BLE Peripheral roles, supports voltage from 1.8V to 3.3V and that work’s with their free Android or iOS app. ARM IoT Business Unit Marketing Engineer Neil Tan also shows his project to make a Strength Enhancing Exoskeleton developed with ARM mbed on an STM32F401 ARM Cortex-M4 based development board. Allwinner Open Source, Tina OS Linux for Allwinner R8, R16, R40, R58, CHIP and Banana Pi dev boards


Allwinner unveils Tina OS, their open-source OS based on Linux with their full range SoCs with open source support from Allwinner. Allwinner R8 is their entry level Single-core ARM Cortex-A8 SoC; Allwinner R16 is their quad-core ARM Cortex-A7 at 1Ghz with WiFi; Allwinner R40 is their new enhanced Quad-core ARM Cortex-A7 for the IoT and open source market, with better performance and enhancements including HDMI support; Allwinner R58 is their 28nm Octa-core ARM Cortex-A7 at up to 2.0Ghz with ISP and a higher performance GPU. Allwinner open source partners making and selling development boards includes the $9 CHIP deveplopment board based on Allwinner R8 with 512MB RAM, 4GB Nand Flash, with WiFi and Bluetooth4.0. CHIP got 2 million dollars funding from their kickstarter campaign and they have shipped to all their backers last December/January. Banana Pi is made by Foxconn, they make open-source development boards powered by Allwinner SoCs, having already shipped over 600 thousand, used in different applications like drones, robotics, education, servers, toys, smart home, IoT and more. BananaPi’s product line includes:
BananaPi BPI-M1 and M1+ powered by Allwinner A20 dual-core ARM Cortex-A7 with Mali-400 GPU;

Ween smart thermostat

Ween is a south France-based company that has on display their smart thermostat. It connects to up to 16 smartphones (house residents) that are then tracked over a period of time, with temperature maintained at a preset level. Since the thermostat knows how long it takes to reach a certain temperature, it switches on appliances at home accordingly. Ween also features inbuilt machine learning capabilities to anticipate and respond to unplanned absences of the members. It goes on sale for US$350 along with a gateway device paired via RF.

GalaxyWind demonstrates their remote air conditioning device Wukong i8. They raised US$2 million for the device that allows users to start air conditioners before reaching home or shut down. The power meter inside the device measures power consumption from the air conditional. Also on display are their other IoT devices such as smart bulbs, WiFi products, and their USB-powered Macbee IoT gateway that can connect up to 128 devices.

Windows 10 IoT Core runs on Raspberry Pi and Inventec Avatar advanced Bluetooth Beacon


Microsoft Windows 10 IoT Core is Windows 10 for the IoT market. Windows 10 IoT Core is free, Windows 10 IoT Core Pro is licenced and sold to OEMs like Inventec here showing their Qualcomm APQ8009 powered Inventec Avatar also connecting to Microsoft Azure, bringing advanced Bluetooth beacon platform with Wi-Fi cloud access to upload the log on Azure. Windows 10 IoT Core is also shown running on Raspberry Pi. From a Universal Windows app a developer can talk directly to the sensors and modules on the Raspberry Pi. Windows 10 IoT core is Windows 10 that can run on lower spec ARM devices, taking up about 200megabytes of space, can run on just 256MB RAM.
