DuPont showcases a wide portfolio of materials for Printed Electronics at the IDTechEx show in Santa Clara. Highlights are its Intexar smart clothing technology including new healthpatch prototypes for wireless patient monitoring, the latest generation in-mold electronics material set and Kapton conductive and dielectric inks for high temperature performance.
Holst Centre is a R&D institute from the Netherlands focusing on printed and flexible electronics For this years IDTechEx we decided to focus on our activities for automotive. Next to integrating electronics in polycarbonate substrates (in mold structural electronics), we are also integrating electronics into glass First the circuits are printed on PET or PVB, then components are placed such as LED’s or chips before laminating the printed electronics into glass The challenge is processing on substrates with very low glass-transition temperature and lamination of relatively thick components without any distortions. The demonstrator we show here uses a transparent capacitive touch button to switch on the LED’s. This enables functional glass which can be used as user interface in public transport, in architectural applications and road user communication for cars Starting with printing electronics in 2D, we now also print in 3D. The machine we have partially developed in-house uses the principle of stereolithography, where a curable photopolymer is hardened layer-by-layer by applying UV light. Using modular illumination, the system can rapidly print large designs. Within the system we are able to place components such as near field chips and dispense lines. This enables small series production: from digital design and raw materials to a 3D electronics structure. The main benefits are being able to optimize the volume dimensions and the fact that the result is rugged. We work with this technology for applications in chip packaging, automotive and defense but we are also looking for other applications Large arrays of elastomer based pressure sensors on flexible substrates such as TPU enables unobtrusive monitoring of posture when laminated into chairs, beds, wheelchairs etc. These pressure sensors consist of a piezo resistive material with a suspended conductive membrane. When pressure is applied, a resistance is measured. The printing technology enables low cost sensing capability over a large area. The example demonstrated is a large pressure sensitive mat, but we also offer fully printed piezo-electric sensors to measure motion and temperature sensors. By integrating many different sensing modalities and measuring at many locations, a lot of data is available to optimize the signal for a specific application, such as a driver drowsiness monitor. Next to these examples Holst Centre works on flexible displays, smart clothing and many other exciting applications of printed electronics. We are happy to see at this IDTechEx event that Faurecia announces volume production of so called plastronics. For the success of the printed electronics industry it is important that all parties in the value chain collaborate to bring even more products to market using printed electronics technology. Fugaku is the flagship next generation national supercomputer being developed by Riken R-CCS and Fujitsu in collaboration https://www.r-ccs.riken.jp/en/postk/project Fugaku will have hyperscale datacenter class resource in a single exascale machine, with more than 150,000 nodes of sever-class Fujitsu A64fx many-core Arm CPUs with the new SVE (Scalable Vector Extension) with low precision math for the first time in the world, accelerating both HPC and AI workloads, augmented with HBM2 memory paired with each CPU, exhibiting nearly a Terabyte/s memory bandwidth for both HPC and AI rapid data movements. A64fx has demonstrated up to 8 times the performance of mainstream “Platinum” server processors for HPC workloads, and this game-changing performance has been realized through extensive co-design process involving the entire Japanese HPC community resulting in a highly HPC-optimzed CPU architecture. Fugaku also will likely to be the premier big data and AI/ML infrastructure; currently, we are conducting research to scale deep learning to more than 100,000 nodes on Fugaku, where we expect to obtain near top GPU-class performance on each node. HySPRINT at IDTechEx Show! Printed Electronics Europe 2019 moving towards broader market. Helmholtz Innovation Lab HySPRINT presented its newest R&D in the field of printing technologies at “IDTechEx Show! Printed Electronics Europe Conference” in Berlin.
“IDTechEx Show! Printed Electronics Europe” is one of the biggest events on printing and hybrid electronics with more than 2500 visitors from all over world. The key goals of this yearly event is to identify and forward the novel technologies, and enable an easy matchmaking between the players in the field.
HySPRINT was one of the very few research institutions to present at the conference. Dr. Paul Harten from HySPRINT spoke about our latest activities in the development of perovskite and silicon-based structures deposited on glass substrates to a large audience of professionals.
The event was combined with an expo that gathered more than 200 exhibitors working on topics of structural electronics, displays, electric vehicles, ink-jet printing. Visitors could communicate with experts from HySPRINT and our industrial partner “Inuru” manufacturing OLEDs. The booth gained a lot of attention from industrial companies and further meetings are already planned to discuss the cooperation opportunities. The interest was moslty focused on our perovskite-based devices, solar cells and dielectric layers. Dr. Rahim Munir working on scalable perovskite solar cells at HySPRINT says: “Guests of the booth, especially from industry, were impressed by our lab facilities. We have agreed on several lab visits and possible tests of their products.” Scaling, ink-jet printing technology and development of non-toxic metal and semiconducting inks gained a special interest in the frame of the recently founded joint lab with Humboldt Universität – “Generative Production Processes for Hybrid Components Lab” – “GenFab”.
