Polar Light Technologies Grows Hexagonal Micro-LED Pyramids with MOCVD

Polar Light Technologies, a Swedish startup, presents its unique approach to micro-LED manufacturing, which involves growing hexagonal pyramids directly in MOCVD reactors. This method eliminates the need for etching, a common step in producing conventional planar micro-LEDs. The company asserts that this growth process results in better performance, higher efficiency, and a clearer path towards monolithic RGB micro-displays.

The grown micro-LED pyramids are currently produced at a size of approximately four micrometers at the base, though the company has demonstrated pixels as small as 430 nanometers. The manufacturing process involves growing the pyramids on a wafer, followed by metallization to connect the pixels. A front plane containing the micro-LEDs is then precisely bonded to a CMOS backplane, which controls the individual pixels. The light is emitted from the bottom of the pyramid structure through the CMOS backplane.

At Display Week 2026, the company showcased its first product, a monochrome green micro-display. This display features a 100×100 pixel array and is targeted initially at the defense market, which has specific applications for monochrome green displays. The product is scheduled to be available for sale by the end of the year, with a development kit also planned.

Polar Light Technologies has also demonstrated the ability to grow red, green, and blue micro-LEDs within the same material system. This capability is crucial for creating a monolithic RGB display, where all three primary colors are integrated on a single chip without requiring quantum dots or color conversion techniques. This contrasts with many planar micro-LED approaches that often use color conversion to produce red light from blue LEDs.

According to CEO Ashutosh Kumar, the MOCVD growth process occurs on a silicon carbide substrate where holes are opened for the pyramids to grow vertically. This etchless process not only improves performance but also reduces material waste. The company positions its pyramid-based architecture as a second-generation micro-LED technology, aiming to provide the performance and scalability necessary for consumer markets like smart glasses.
