Qualcomm Snapdragon at Embedded World 2017


The Qualcomm Snapdragon platform is originally designed for mobile, but now can be embedded into Interactive kiosks, Digital signage, Robotics, High-tech toys, in flight entertainment, medical imaging and all kinds of ideas for any advanced IoT. Qualcomm positions their Snapdragon processors for Embedded to provide a superior performance, low power consumption and integrated connectivity to make devices more aware, connected, intelligent and interactive. The Snapdragon platform offers development kits, single-board computers and scaling up to customer solutions, integration services and production-ready, customizable System-on-Modules (SOMs). At Embedded World 2017, Qualcomm talks about Snapdragon 410E, Snapdragon 600E and also talks about the upcoming 820 series for embedded all with long term support (at least until 2025) to provide their maximum performance. Qualcomm Dragonboard 410c at Linaro Connect Budapest 2017

Following the http://96boards.org/openhours/ session at Linaro Connect Budapest 2017, Lawrence King, Engineer, Sr. Staff/Mgr at Qualcomm Canada, talks a bit about the history of Dragonboard (since my video of an early Dragonboard filmed with him at Computex 2011) leading to the Dragonboard 410c, the ecosystem that is being built around it and some of what’s to come from Qualcomm with Dragonboard.

Nvidia Tegra X2 in Jetson TX2 Developer Kit, dual Denver2 + quad ARM Cortex-A57, Pascal GPU


Nvidia Tegra X2 features two Nvidia custom Denver 2 cores, four ARM Cortex-A57 cores with Nvidia’s Pascal GPU (made of 256 CUDA cores) made on TSMC’s 16nm FinFET+. Freedreno enables Linux distros on Dragonboard 820c 96Boards

Rob Clark, maker of the open source GPU driver Freedreno shows off his latest Freedreno open source GPU working on an upcoming Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 based Dragonboard 820c development board, one that is going to use an expanded 96Boards specification to add PCI-E and Gigabit Ethernet ports among other things to the development board. This Freedreno and 820 board provides a significant jump in performance for the GPU, possibly 4x to 5x between the Adreno 306 in a Dragonboard 410c and the Adreno 530 in a Snapdragon 820 based board. The availability of the Freedreno open source GPU driver on Qualcomm based development boards means that these development boards can run all sorts of Linux distributions, including Debian, not just Android. Linaro Android AOSP TV, making Android TV Boxes and Smart TVs better

Interview with the core team behind the Linaro’s AOSP TV project. The project lead Khasim Syed Mohammed and team members Show Liu and Vincent Chou demonstrate Android TV running on the 96Boards HiKey platform. The team shares the goals of the AOSP TV project, how it will benefit the SoC vendors, OEMs and ODMs of Smart TVs and Advanced Set-top box manufacturers and Android TV application developers. They clarify the project goal, its to create AOSP TV as the open source subset of Android TV and is not to fork the Android TV work from Google. They also share the details on upcoming LHG’s AOSP TV m-lcr release, OPTEE security framework integration, DRM support to be added and a lot more.

MotoMods on Indiegogo and Hackathons for the ultimate Moto Z modular Smartphone platform

The Lenovo Moto Z MotoMods ecosystem team got 700 submitions, launching 35 of those campaigns for ideas for new MotoMods on Transform the Smartphone challenge on Indiegogo with ideas ranging from barcode scanners, Edge Light LED lights for notifications wireless charging, sliding physical keyboard and many more ideas for new MotoMods that can be made for the Moto Z ecosystem. Nokia Android Phones are finally coming, 139€ Nokia 3 , 229€ Nokia 5, 189€ Nokia 6

Nokia branded Android smartphones are being launched by ex-Nokia employees having formed a new company HMD Global. Nokia Android phones are aimed at providing highest possible specs at budget prices running stock Android 7.0. The Nokia 5 and 6 features a unibody Aluminum design while the Nokia 3 features a polycarbonate design.

The Nokia 6 is the most fully featured device offered featuring a featuring FHD 5.5″, 3GB of RAM, 32GB of storage, and Qualcomm Snapdragon 430 processor. The front camera is 8-megapixel and the back camera is 16mp. The Arte Black version of the Nokia 6 features 4gb of ram and 64gb of storage. The Arte Black version will sell for 299 euros. The Standard Nokia 6 will retail 229 euros.

The Nokia 5 has is similar to the Nokia 6 but has a curved edge display. The Nokia 5 has a 5.5″ (720p) display, Snapdragon 430 processor, 2GB of RAM, 16GB of storage and microSD. The Nokia 5 will sell for 189 Euros.

The Nokia 3 features a 5″ (720p) display, an MTK 6737 quad-core processor, 2GB of RAM, 16GB of storage, and Microsd support. The Nokia 3 will sell for a price of 139 Euros.

Oppo shows 5X lossless optical dual camera zoom

Oppo showcases their technology that allows 5X zoom inside a smartphone body. The technique used involves a periscope-style structure that diverts light through a prism and onto a wide-angle lens, that allows for a claimed lossless 5X zoom. It is demonstrated on a prototype Oppo phone using a 6″ QHD with Oppo VOOC fast charging.

Sony Xperia Touch, projector turns any table or wall into a 23″ Android tablet

Sony Xperia Touch is the world’s coolest Smart Android projector which turns any surface into a 23″ touch display using infrared, IR camera sensors, it also works projected onto a wall. Using a 1.6GHz Snapdragon 650 Hexacore dual ARM Cortex-A72 and quad ARM Cortex-A53, 3GB RAM, 32GB Flash. It uses USB Type-C and also has a Micro HDMI connector. It’s going to be released soon at about $1500. I have been waiting for a decade asking all the potential manufacturers when they would make this type of product. It’s going to be even nicer when this can get integrated into a pico projector the size of a Smartphone, or even integrated into a smartphone.

Sony Xperia XZ Premium is Sony’s new high end Android smartphone with a premium design and premium features such as being the world’s first smartphone with a 5.46″ 4K HDR display, uses Qualcomm Snapdragon 835, 4GB RAM, 64GB Flash, MicroSD, single or dual SIM. With a 19Megapixel back camera and 13Megapixel front camera with ultra slow motion recording support of 960fps in 720p. The XZ Premium can also be used for some pretty impressive 4K HDR VR.

Quaclomm Snapgragon 835 is Qualcomm’s fastest ARM processor ever, possibly the world’s fastest Smartphone ARM Processor yet. Built on amazingly small 10nm, Snapdragon 835 is 35% smaller and offers power efficiency gains of up to 35% over the previous generation Snapdragon 821 processor. Gigabit LTE is available through the X16 modem and multi-Gigabit speeds over 802.11ad, integrated 2×2 11ac MU-MIMO Wi-Fi. Quick charge 4.0 charges 20% faster with up to 30% more efficiency. Snapdragon 835 supports VR and AR such as Project Tango. Interview with the Gemini PDA team of Planet Computers at MWC 2017, presenting the awesome looking Gemini PDA, designed by the PSION designer Martin Riddiford, with fully integrated tactile QWERTY keyboard, Android 7 and Linux dual-boot. 4G LTE, WiFi, Bluetooth, dual USB Type-C. They’ll have 2 versions, one WiFi only starting at $299 and the other fully equipped with WiFi and 4G starting at $349 on Indiegogo. the final retail price might be more if they can get support to get it mass manufactured, perhaps at around $599. With the giant 8000mAh battery, it will have two weeks of stand-by time or 12 hours of talk time. With the fully tactile keyboard that is recognised as the smallest keyboard for finger touch typing. Dual side mounted speakers, Integrated Voice Assist button, SD card slot. The display will be a 5.7″ 2880×1440, 564ppi, 18:9 aspect ratio display (the same that LG is using in the LG G6).

Android Continuum: OXI by Auxens with Laptop Dock (Nexdock) with Vernee Apollo 2 on MediaTek X30

At the Vernee booth, as Vernee is the first to announce their upcoming 10nm Vernee Apollo 2 smartphone, running on the Helio-X25 in the Vernee Apollo, they are introducing their French startup software partner Auxens presenting the OXI Android OS Android Continuum platform! OXI is a slightly modified Android OS (adding in a few extra APIs to the normal Android firmware), it can display a desktop-like user interface with multitask features such as multi resizable windows, desktop, notifications, “Start menu” and more. It can also display this interface on the external display using DisplayLink, wireless (miracast or chromecast) or by mhl or slimport. Meanwhile the smartphone screen is still completely usable and independent, with regular Android. OXI is compatible with any current Android app. It doesn’t require any specific action from the apps developers.
