Judy Chen, Director of Marketing at MHL presents the latest developments at the MHL Consortium, the latest list of devices to support the new standard. It looks like most new high-end phones, HDTVs and new types of devices are using the MHL connector and are part of the MHL Consortium, the reason being having everything go through one Micro-USB connector on the side of devices makes them simpler, thinner, cheaper to manufacture.

Status of the RK2918 for use in Set-top-boxes, it can be done for less than $50, with up to ICS support, Google TV OS support once that is open sourced.
ViewLink MyVu VizCom Headmounted Android video-streaming system
The targetted price is $199, mass manufacturing to start in March. It’s an LCOS based headmounted 800×600 display connected with an Android box that you can put in your pocket. That Android powered box runs apps, such as the Biggifi remote controlling app, it can also output Android to your HDTV using the MHL connector. It can tether through your smartphone for internet connectivity and stream the video from the headset to any Android supported live video streaming services, be it ustream, google+ hangouts, justin.tv and more.
Eton Rukus launched at CES 2012
Here’s a solar powered sound system, you can use it on a sunny day in the park or on the beach and the solar powered system and battery should last it playing loud music the whole day. It’s got a little E Ink screen that displays information about status, battery level, volume and other information. You pair your Bluetooth smartphone or other Bluetooth music player to it as the source for the music.
Freescale i.MX6 Lite Series launched at CES 2012
Freescale launches 2 new i.MX6 ARM Cortex-A9 processors at CES 2012, while demonstrating the performance of their quad-core, they are also launching the new i.MX 6SoloLite processor, which is designed specifically for next-generation eReaders and is the follow-on to the company’s i.MX508 processor and the dual-core i.MX 6DualLite, targeting a broad array of smart devices and products including tablets, IPTVs, IP phones, medical patient monitoring systems and home energy management solutions.

Freescale promises to provide 15 years of support for the chip, meaning that car manufacturers can feel confident using the i.MX6 in cars and airplanes, as it takes multiple years to make those, Freescale promises to still manufacture the same processor 15 years from now. They optimize features for cars such as using sensors and cameras for better car safety. Freescale is a global leader in producing processors used in cars.

For now it’s Froyo, the MTK6573 may support Ice Cream Sandwich soon, to be confirmed. So this is not just an Android watch, thanks to the Mediatek processor, it can replace your smartphone. It has a built-in camera, MicroSD card slot, speaker, microphone and more. Kente shows $185 Galaxy Note clone and $133 Galaxy S2 clone, mediatek MTK6573 based
Check out these nice looking cheap Android phones, using the MTK6573 ARM11 650Mhz processor, the performance is decent and it supports HSDPA 3G as well as a second GPRS/voice 2G SIM card. The price is about $185 for the Galaxy Note clone with a 5″ LCD screen, and $133 for the Galaxy S2 clone. The company is soon going to provide the same design based on the Qualcomm MSM7227 HSPA enabled ARM11 processor. Consider those prices are only for bulk orders of 1000 units or more, can be negotiated. The quality of these new Mediatek MTK6573 based Android phones seems great for the price!
MobilTab Sleek Android Tablet
The MobilTab Sleek uses the Hummingbird ARM Cortex-A8 overclocked at 1.5Ghz, 7″ capacitive 1024×600 capacitive touch screen, they are for now merging some of the UI features of Gingerbread, Honeycomb and ICS, upgrading to ICS when available for the processor. They have a WiFi-only and HSPA+ version available.

Augmented Video-blogging Hangout featuring the Kopin Golden-i at CES 2012

Demonstrating and talking about my Augmented Video-blogging using their device, and other uses of this headmounted display device and other news from the CES. E Ink On Every Smart Surface
Exclusive 17-minute interview with E Ink’s CMO at CES, where they showed me a Triton color display for signage with color so saturated that it looked like an LCD except that it was thinner than OLED, sunlight readable, uses no backlights and uses very little power. I also saw the SURF display used in a hand drill which has not been filmed before. The 11.5″ 300DPI eDocument reader made in collaboration with Epson. The Triton color display based Ectaco eReader that had just won the CES innovation award, it is being deployed in Russian schools. New E Ink watches from Phosphor and Seiko. Finally, the Eton Ruckus music player with E Ink display that was launched this week was demonstrated, it is considered to be indestructible.
E Ink has shipped over 25 million E Ink screens for e-readers alone in 2011, that’s up from 10 million screens in 2010 and 4 million screens in 2009. Now E Ink is also working to expand into new markets, signage, appliances, everywhere. The idea is that more and more devices and surfaces may get an E Ink screen on them that thus by being bi-stable can show the informations for a long time without using any battery. While many electronic paper technology companies show samples, E Ink is actually in mass production with monochrome, color and segmented displays and they claim that no technology in the world comes close to the reading experience on E Ink’s displays and these displays are easy on the eyes since they don’t have a shiny background or light emitting backlight.
E Ink also provided me with following amazing video featuring the actual E Ink Pearl roll display material used in Nook, Sony, Kindle etc. The video was shot alongside the Charles river in Cambridge/Boston and you can see MIT (E Ink is MIT spin off) and Boston skyline in the background. The display is a few feet wide and can go one kilometer (it was 500 meters in this video):
