Atmel | SMART SAM S70 and E70 ARM Cortex-M7 (World’s fastest ARM Cortex-M)


The Atmel | SMART SAM S70 and E70 microcontrollers are based on the high-performance 32-bit ARM Cortex-M7 RISC processors with double precision floating point unit. They operate at a maximum speed of 300MHz and feature up to 2048KB of Flash, dual 16KB of cache memory and up to 384KB of SRAM. They can achieve 1500 CoreMarks or up to 645 DMIPS. On the memory side, they have a flexible SRAM which can be configured as Tightly Coupled Memory (TCM) up to 256KB. Allowing execution of deterministic code or fast processing data. Code executed from TCM is executed at full speed so at 300MHz. The SRAM is multi-port which is reducing the latency over the bus matrix. When they have a lot of burst the latency can be reduced by 16 thanks to the 4 ports. To accelerate the execution of the code from on-chip Flash or nonvolatile memory connected to QuadSPI or over the External Bus Interface, they have integrated a huge L1 cache of 16kByte for the instruction and 16kByte for the data. Both with ECC. The 384KByte of SRAM can be extended through the SDRAM interface. Looking at the features now, they have plenty of serial communications such as SPI, SDIO or USART. Atmel has one High-speed USB Host and Device, with integrated PHY which obviously save some cost and PCB space. There is one CMOS Camera interface for image acquisition. All the series offer two Advanced Analog Frontend (AFE) with Dual Sample and hold capability and Up to 16-bit resolution with hardware oversampling. They also have programmable Gain for small signal input. All series offer real-time event management through direct connection between PWM, Timer and ADC for motor control application. Both series are based on the same feature set, the only difference is coming from the Ethernet, CAN support (SAME70 integrates Ethernet and CAN). Atmel offers all series in BGA and QFP from 64 to 144 pins. Small 64-pin pincount option offers an entry level form factor high performance MCU. All series support the extended Industrial temperature range from -40 to 105°C.

Rob Clark, Freedreno project owner, talks about the status of open source graphics drivers for Qualcomm Adreno processor. The Linaro Linux release uses Freedreno graphics driver for HW acceleration. Other landing team engineers talk about various other plugins and drivers such Gstreamer plugin developed for the Linux release to enable to support for HW accelerated HTML5 video. Xilinx Zynq UltraScale+ FPGA MPSoC with quad ARM Cortex-A53 and dual ARM Cortex-R5

Xilinx announces their next generation 16nm FPGA with quad-core ARM Cortex-A53 and dual-core ARM Cortex-R5, Mali400 GPU. The FPGA market is for designs where flexibility, high performance and fast time to market is important providing programmable hardware. The silicon is going to be available at the end of this year, so they are for now showing emulated version of their SoC. The dual-core ARM Cortex-R5 on the SoC are used for increased safety and security. I just wish Sony would sell it closer to sub-$300 with LTE and the Keyboard Dock than at probably $600+.

Qualcomm announced their upcoming Snapdragon 820 processor, introducing their newest Kryo custom ARM 64bit design, to be available in the second half of the year, built on FinFET technology. Qualcomm introduces their cognitive computing which is a sort of artificial intelligence making mobile computing easier. This video is also a 28-minute booth tour of the Qualcomm booth at Mobile World Congress 2015, where they are showing Cat9 450mbitps LTE and even Cat11 LTE at up to 600mbitps! Qualcomm shows their advanced 4K and Graphics on the Snapdragon 810 Octa-core 64bit ARM Cortex-A57/53. We also get to see some of Qualcomm’s Allseen Internet of Things demos, augmented reality, mantis vision’s MV4D world scanning, the Snapdragon 400 powering Android Wear and more.

Possibly the fastest ARM Processor for smartphones yet, it runs Samsung’s Exynos 7420 Octa-core quad ARM Cortex-A57 and quad ARM Cortex-A53 in big.LITTLE on Samsung’s 14nm FinFET technology, with a 5.1″ 1440×2560 display (at 577ppi), 138gr and a 2550mAh battery. Available for an undisclosed price (probably $600+) starting April 10th.

ARM Cortex-A72 in MediaTek MT8173 shown in a real tablet!

MediaTek shows the world’s first ARM Cortex-A72 processor, in a big.LITTLE formation with dual ARM Cortex-A72 and dual ARM Cortex-A53 on a 28nm process design with the SGX6250 GPU, this processor is real, it is implemented in a tablet here showing working Lollipop Android 5.0 running on their tablet reference! MediaTek provides it to their partners to start working on the integration and for their partners hopefully to soon be able to release ARM Cortex-A72 based MT8173 based tablets! I hope they are also preparing Chrome OS for this amazingly powerful ARM Processor!

LTE WorldMode with MediaTek MT6735 and MT6753, now ready for the USA market and worldwide!

MediaTek now supports worldwide LTE with the 64bit MT6735 quad-core ARM Cortex-A53 and the 64bit MT6753 octa-core ARM Cortex-A53. This is LTE Cat4 for GSM and CDMA! They claim to be 10-15% faster in single SIM mode and 20-30% faster with dual-sim support compared to perhaps a Qualcomm LTE Worldmode. They also claim to use less power than competitor for standby, 3G and LTE mode. Many LTE Telcos around the world have already certified support for these new MediaTek LTE parts, with support on Vodafone, Orange, T-Mobile, Three, Deutche Telekom, China Unicom, China Mobile Telefonica, Verizon and AT&T. This LTE Worldmode processor is a big deal for MediaTek as it opens up the USA market for them, where MediaTek previously didn’t have much support for American telecoms as MediaTek’s previous 3G and LTE solutions mainly was working outside of the USA.

Both K70 and KL46Z are running MicroEJ Java platform, JVM footprint is 28KB ROM+1.5KB RAM. Boot time to Java main method is 2ms at 120MHz.
