Renesas Electronics Corporation presents the first live demonstrations of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) implementations on an MCU based on the Arm Cortex-M85 processor. The demos show the performance uplift in AI/ML applications made possible by the new Cortex-M85 core and Arm’s Helium technology.
This year, Renesas is extending its leadership by showcasing the features of the new processor in demanding AI use cases. The first demonstration showcases a people detection application developed in collaboration with Plumerai, a leader in Vision AI, that identifies and tracks persons in the camera frame in varying lighting and environmental conditions. The compact and efficient TinyML models used in this application lead to low-cost and lower power AI solutions for a wide range of IoT implementations. The second demo showcases a motor control predictive maintenance use case with an AI-based unbalanced load detection application using Tensorflow Lite for Microcontrollers with CMSIS-NN.
Delivering over 6 CoreMark/MHz, Cortex-M85 enables demanding IoT use cases that require the highest compute performance and DSP or ML capability, realized on a single, simple-to-program Cortex-M processor. The Arm Cortex-M85 processor features Helium technology, Arm’s M-Profile Vector Extension, available as part of the Armv8.1M architecture. It delivers a significant performance uplift for machine learning (ML) and digital signal processing (DSP) applications, accelerating compute-intensive applications such as endpoint AI. Both demos will showcase the performance uplift made possible by the application of this technology in AI use cases. Cortex-M hallmarks such as deterministic operation, short interrupt response time, and state-of-the-art low-power support are uncompromised on Cortex-M85.

This performance uplift will enable our customers to use larger and more accurate versions of Plumerai’s People Detection AI, add additional product features, and extend battery life. Our customers have an insatiable appetite for adding new and more accurate AI features that run on a microcontroller. Together with Renesas, we are the first to fulfill this demand.”
Renesas will implement the new Arm processor within its RA (Renesas Advanced) Family of MCUs. Renesas has quickly become a leader in the Arm MCU market, offering a feature rich family of over 250 different MCUs. Renesas has developed a robust ecosystem of partners providing customers with comprehensive solutions for IoT, AI/ML, industrial automation, medical, building automation, home appliance and multiple other applications.
The new Cortex-M85 core supports Arm TrustZone® technology for protection of secure assets. Combined with TrustZone, Renesas’ integrated cryptographic engine, immutable storage, key management, and tamper protection against DPA/SPA side-channel attacks will provide a comprehensive and fully integrated secure element functionality. The Armv8-M architecture also brings Pointer Authentication/Branch Target Identification (PAC/BTI) security extension, a new architectural feature that provides enhanced mitigation from software attack threats and helps achieve PSA Certified Level 2 certification.
The new RA MCUs based on the Cortex-M85 core will be supported by Renesas’ Flexible Software Package (FSP). The FSP enables faster application development by providing all the infrastructure software needed, including multiple RTOS, BSP, peripheral drivers, middleware, connectivity, networking, and security stacks as well as reference software to build complex AI, motor control and graphics solutions. It allows customers to integrate their own legacy code and choice of RTOS with FSP, thus providing full flexibility in application development. Using the FSP will ease migration of existing designs to the new RA devices.

The Scalable Open Architecture for Embedded Edge (SOAFEE) project is an industry-led collaboration defined by automakers, semiconductor suppliers, open source and independent software vendors, and cloud technology leaders. The initiative intends to deliver a cloud-native architecture enhanced for mixed-criticality automotive applications with corresponding open-source reference implementations to enable commercial and non-commercial offerings.
Building on technologies like Project Cassini and SystemReady, which define standard boot and security requirements for Arm architecture, SOAFEE adds the cloud-native development and deployment framework while introducing functional safety, security, and real-time capabilities required for automotive workloads.
Components of SOAFEE
This is a high-level view of an automotive central compute solution stack showing hardware, software, and cloud levels. At the bottom level, standards based firmware and security interfaces ensure system integrators and software developers have a consistent platform enabling seamless secure boot and system bring-up across all compliant hardware.
The SOAFEE architecture will seek to re-use existing open standards for the different components in the framework, and will extend those standards as necessary to meet the mixed-criticality requirements of automotive applications.
SOAFEE builds on top of these specifications and standards with a reference framework to standardize key non-differentiating middle-layers, such as the hypervisor, operating systems, container runtime and hardware abstraction layers. Read more at https://www.soafee.io/

Osbourne is a versatile carrier board for the NVIDIA Jetson AGX Orin high-performance GPU module. https://www.diamondsystems.com/products/osbourne It provides access to all I/O features of the Orin module and includes numerous sockets for I/O expansion. Osbourne has been designed to be used in almost any application ranging from commercial to industrial to airborne to rugged military use.

Flexible I/O Connector Design
All I/O on Osbourne is accessed through a single high-speed, high-density connector along the board edge. This decouples the board design from any specific I/O connector arrangement and frees you to select whatever I/O connector scheme you want. Standard connector boards are available for typical use cases, including a panel-mount connector board for installation in an enclosure and a breakout board for use with cables.
Panel I/O Board
The Panel I/O board provides the ability to install Osbourne directly into an enclosure without the use of cables. All I/O is provided on a series of commercial-style connectors designed to be mounted in an enclosure front panel.

I/O Expansion
Jasper includes dual PCIe minicard sockets with both PCIe and USB interfaces, supporting a wide range of I/O and communications/networking modules from Diamond as well as third party vendors. It includes an M.2 E key socket for installation of WiFi and other networking modules. Also a PCIe slot connector enables attachment of standard desktop-style PCIe slot I/O boards with PCIe x8 / x4 / x1 connection.
Mass storage is provided with an M.2 2242/2280 NVME socket and a Micro-SD card socket.

Flexible Design to Fit Any Application
The most popular I/O on Jasper is provided on a single row of connectors along the front edge of the PCB. This arrangement supports dual connection modes. First Jasper can be used with traditional cables, with each cable providing a positive locking feature for increased shock and vibration resistance. Secondly the single row of connectors makes it easy to design and build I/O connector boards that match the end application’s exact requirements. For example a connector board with commercial connectors (RJ-45, USB type A, etc.) or MIL-DTL-38999 rugged circuit connectors can be plugged directly into the Jasper I/O connectors to create a “cable-free” solution. Such a connector board can dramatically reduce assembly time and cost for the end system.
