MediaTek CMO Johan Lodenius talks IoT, Turnkey Solutions
MediaTek is shipping hundreds of millions of ARM Processors each year, second Smartphone chip provider by volume after Qualcomm, MediaTek is launching their Internet of Things optimized ARM Processors for Smart Homes, for wide area and short area networks connectivity. MediaTek pioneered the Turnkey solution 10 years ago for feature phones and they do exactly the same for Smartphones, enabling fast time to market for smart mobile technology.
MediaTek Helio X20 Tri-Cluster 10-core ARMv8 64bit processor
MediaTek shows off and claims that their new Tri-Cluster 10-core ARM processor can use about 30-40% less power running certain apps in Android for example saving power consumption or performance efficiency when doing things like Facebook and Web Browsing. The MediaTek Helio X20 has 4 ARM Cortex-A53 at a low 1.4Ghz clock speed, 4 ARM Cortex-A53 at a higher 2Ghz clock speed and 2 ARM Cortex-A72 at a high 2.5Ghz clock speed. MediaTek claims that them being able to shift gears improves power consumption and performance. MediaTek CorePilot 3.0 improves MediaTek’s heterogeneous multi-processing to also integrate the GPU into the efficient processing.
Chromebook on ARM Cortex-A72 MediaTek MT8173 big.LITTLE
MediaTek are showing their first Chromebook, with a dual ARM Cortex-A72 with dual ARM Cortex-A53 big.LITTLE of their “world’s fastest” MT8173 SoC with SGX6250 GPU. MediaTek are optimizing the Chrome OS performance in partnership with Google to get this launched as soon as possible, though probably not before the beginning of next year they say. It has dual USB Type-C, one of which can output to a secondary display. For the final product, the built-in Chromebook display can be up to 2K resolution, now showing off 1366×768 on this prototype. Fast charge through the USB Type-C will work. The displays could be 11.6″ or 13″, the displays will probably be 1366×768 or 1920×1080. The target is affordable pricing. MediaTek together with Imagination and Google are the first to optimize the PowerVR6 GPU for Chrome OS, trying to take advantage of all its heterogeneous multiprocessing speecs to try to optimize the performance. MediaTek is revisiting their optimization approach to upstream all of their work, soon enough people will be able to get all of the source code that they are developing to get this ready.

Andromium OS on MHL Lapdock, Productivity multi-window UI for Android
Gordon Zheng, Founder and Lead Developer, presents Andromium OS, described as a guest OS that run on top of Android, leveraging existing Android API’s as well as a new UI library to bring a productivity keyboard/mouse desktop style user experience similar to Windows and OSX. Currently Android does not support a true multi-window experience, however some manufactures like LG and Samsung have made some modification to android (ROM) to bring the side by side apps and windows app experience for their devices. Andromium takes a similar approach, while Samsung and LG’s approaches are exclusive to their devices, Andromium OS runs on any Android device as long as their device support Android version 4.4 and above. The next step for Andromium will be to release a Developer SDK and Andromium app store to the developer community, to grow the OS ecosystem.
The Andromium SDK, designed as an additional library that developers can import into their existing Android projects, allowing their android apps to inherit the Andromium OS multi-windows functionality, as well as have the correct UI elements for a keyboard and mouse interface. The Android developers can continue to use their favorite Developer environment: ADT or Eclipse, they just have to import Andromium’s library into their project.
Currently Andromium OS in on the Google playstore as a public beta, it is currently around 5mb download. Long term the OS/App will stay relatively small. Andromium can support most devices on Android 4.4 and above (including Lollipop). The Andromium OS/UI is hardware accelerated, so that users should experience 30fps or above according to the performance of the ARM Processor. For example on a Samsung Note 4, Andromium OS can play a 4k video, surf in the browser and still have close to 30fps ui rendering when moving or resizing the application windows.

Best of MWC: MediaTek MT2601 Smartwatch and Smart Glass!!
MediaTek launches their MT2601 Android Wear ready (soon) Smartwatch platform, and also they show off their Kopin micro LCD Smart Glass solution on MediaTek Aster MT2502. In my opinion, these are the best looking Smartwatch and Smartglass at Mobile World Congress 2015. The Smartwatch that MediaTek is showing is designed by GoerTek and it runs Android 4.4 for now but Android 5.0 with Android Wear UI is coming soon for the MT2601 platform according to MediaTek. MediaTek MT2502 is running an ARM11 core to run the MediaTek LinkIt OS while MediaTek MT2601 is a dual-core ARM Cortex-A7 to run a full Android Lollipop with Android Wear soon supported! This is perhaps the optimal low cost Smartwatch and Smart Glass solution for the market, finally available from MediaTek, with soon to come Lollipop thus Android Wear supported.
Specs of the GoerTek MediaTek MT2601 Smartwatch:
– 1.5” circular TFT LCD 320×320
– IPX7 waterproofing
– BT/BLE, Wi-Fi, GPS, 3G cellular supported
– Android 4.4 OS (Lollipop Android Wear soon!)
– PPG heart-rate sensing
– Built-in microphone and speaker
ARM Cortex-A72 in MediaTek MT8173 shown in a real tablet!
MediaTek shows the world’s first ARM Cortex-A72 processor, in a big.LITTLE formation with dual ARM Cortex-A72 and dual ARM Cortex-A53 on a 28nm process design with the SGX6250 GPU, this processor is real, it is implemented in a tablet here showing working Lollipop Android 5.0 running on their tablet reference! MediaTek provides it to their partners to start working on the integration and for their partners hopefully to soon be able to release ARM Cortex-A72 based MT8173 based tablets! I hope they are also preparing Chrome OS for this amazingly powerful ARM Processor!
LTE WorldMode with MediaTek MT6735 and MT6753, now ready for the USA market and worldwide!
MediaTek now supports worldwide LTE with the 64bit MT6735 quad-core ARM Cortex-A53 and the 64bit MT6753 octa-core ARM Cortex-A53. This is LTE Cat4 for GSM and CDMA! They claim to be 10-15% faster in single SIM mode and 20-30% faster with dual-sim support compared to perhaps a Qualcomm LTE Worldmode. They also claim to use less power than competitor for standby, 3G and LTE mode. Many LTE Telcos around the world have already certified support for these new MediaTek LTE parts, with support on Vodafone, Orange, T-Mobile, Three, Deutche Telekom, China Unicom, China Mobile Telefonica, Verizon and AT&T. This LTE Worldmode processor is a big deal for MediaTek as it opens up the USA market for them, where MediaTek previously didn’t have much support for American telecoms as MediaTek’s previous 3G and LTE solutions mainly was working outside of the USA.
