650 million MHL devices shipped. MHL 3 delivers 4K to tens of millions of consumers

More than 650 million MHL products have shipped worldwide since the first MHL products were released in 2011 (as I filmed my first MHL video in 2011). The global MHL ecosystem includes adapters, automotive accessories, A/V receivers, Blu-ray Disc players, cables, DTVs, monitors, projectors, smartphones, streaming media sticks, tablets and more. A steady stream of MHL 3.0 mobile devices that output 4K Ultra HD video have been released this year, including the Samsung Galaxy Note 4, Sony Xperia Z2 and Z3, and ZTE nubia Z7, along with MHL 3.0 4K Ultra HD displays from Samsung and Sony. 4K is rapidly growing in popularity and, with these MHL 3.0 smartphones, consumers can capture brilliant photos and videos and then enjoy them in full 4K Ultra HD quality on their new big screen 4K TV. In part thanks to MHL and thanks to the newest ARM Processors from Qualcomm and others, already now there are tens of millions of consumers with 4K Camcorders and 4K video players directly within their smartphone in their pocket!

4K video on Sony Xperia Z2

4K video recording and playback on a phone is amazing. Here Sony shows and talks about their Qualcomm S801 powered 4K video support on their new flagship Sony Xperia Z2 phone. MHL 3.0 does 4K playback, 600mbitps USB Host data channel, HDCP 2.2

Posted by – March 5, 2014

MHL demonstrates the amazing Sony Xperia Z2 with 4K output through MHL 3.0 with HDCP 2.2 content protection (required by Hollywood for 4K playback), then they show a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 reference board with Silicon Image Sil8620 doing MHL 3.0 outputting to a MHL 3.0 Docking Board with the SIlicon Image SiI9394 MHL 3.0-to-HDMI 2.0 bridge IC. What’s also really awesome is they can stream fast data through the USB Host ports on the MHL 3.0 Dock and back through the phone. This is absolutely awesome and I have been waiting for this type of 600mbitps bandwidth on USB Host to be added to MHL, thus potentially using Smartphones as desktops and laptops when docked in desktop docks and laptop docks like the Acer Extend featured in my other MHL 3.0 video about productivity: http://138.2.152.197/2014/02/28/mhl-for-productivity-acer-extend-mediatek-mt6592-mhl-optimizations-and-dellroku-mhl-hdmi-sticks/

Konka $900 42″ 4K, $1000 50″ 4K, $1100 55″ 4K, $1600 65″ 4K, $4000 84″ 4K

Posted by – February 22, 2014

Here are the cheapest yet 4K displays for sale all over China, now being exported worldwide either under the Konka brand or under third party brands. They sell about 30K 4K displays per month at the moment and mass production of these are ramping up. Those all support HDMI 2 60fps by default. Konka uses the LG and Samsung 4K panels, so the quality is the same in terms of the panel, the CPU and 4K engine is different generating and upscaling perhaps different 4K quality yet, they use for example MStar 4K engine with among other things 4K HEVC decode support.
