Magstor exhibited at NAB 2026, showcased LTO tape storage solutions positioned as a cost-effective long-term archiving alternative to cloud storage. A representative from AgStore discussed LTO technology roadmaps, current generation capabilities, and deployment economics for media production workflows. Magstor highlighted tape cartridge capacities ranging from 12TB to 40TB, with the latest LTO 10 generation delivering 30TB cartridges at approximately $250 per unit. Comparing five-petabyte archive scenarios over nine years, the representative cited approximately $147,000 total cost versus approximately $2.4 million for comparable AWS cloud storage. LTO 9 drives currently retail around $8,000 following recent market price increases, with a budget LTO 8 option under $4,000 with three-year warranty planned for release.

HDMI® Technology is the foundation for the worldwide ecosystem of HDMI-connected devices; integrated with displays, set-top boxes, laptops, audio video receivers and other product types. Because of this global usage, manufacturers, resellers, integrators and consumers must be assured that their HDMI® products work seamlessly together and deliver the best possible performance by sourcing products from licensed HDMI Adopters or authorized resellers. For HDMI Cables, consumers can look for the official HDMI® Cable Certification Labels on packaging. Innovation continues with the latest HDMI 2.2 Specification that supports higher 96Gbps bandwidth and next-gen HDMI Fixed Rate Link technology to provide optimal audio and video for a wide range of device applications. Higher resolutions and refresh rates are supported, including up to 12K@120 and 16K@60. Additionally, more high-quality options are supported, including uncompressed full chroma formats such as 8K@60/4:4:4 and 4K@240/4:4:4 at 10-bit and 12-bit color.

LTO tape uses strontium ferrite magnetic material on the latest generation cartridges, offering significantly improved areal density compared to earlier barium ferrite formulations. The representative demonstrated 30TB and 40TB cartridges, noting the technology continues to improve with each generation approximately doubling capacity. Hard drive longevity was contrasted against tape archival life, with hard drives rated around five years versus tape cartridges rated for 30-year archive life. Cartridges can be stored at room temperature in dual cases or protective housings, making them suitable for off-site disaster recovery scenarios.

The dual-drive configuration was presented as a popular option for creating redundant copies for separate geographic locations, addressing fire, flood, and water damage risks. Transfer speeds reach 300MB/s on half-height LTO drives, comparable to or faster than typical hard drive transfers rated around 200MB/s. Full verification loops ensure data integrity during write operations, with read speeds matching write performance. The representative noted that even full 18TB tape fills complete in hours, not all day, with transfer times similar to hard drive operations.

LTFS (Linear Tape File System) was explained as the key enabling technology, creating file-level indexing that allows direct mounting in Windows or Mac file explorers for drag-and-drop file retrieval without proprietary backup software. This standard, developed on LTO generation five by IBM, replaces legacy tar archive workflows that required restoring entire backup sets. File seeking uses cartridge indexes to locate data without tape wear concerns, enabling random access to individual files without repeated full-tape traversals. The technology supports both archiving at 30-year retention and automated nightly backup scheduling.

The representative confirmed that IBM manufactures all LTO tape drives globally, with Fujifilm and Sony producing the magnetic tape cartridges themselves. Magstor offers rental programs for LTO drives as an alternative to capital purchases, with most rental partners based in the US and limited international availability. Pricing and specification details reflect current market conditions as of the NAB 2026 exhibition date.
