OLPC XO-3 unbreakable Pixel Qi to show after CES

OLPC is working to design an unbreakable screen and thus may not have the XO-3 prototypes ready to show at CES in January. Marvell and its partners will likely have lots of tablets to show by then though. An unbreakable and sunlight readable Pixel Qi screen is an important feature of the XO-3 to make it a viable option for developing countries, as well as its abilities to be used for full productivity and for fast text input.

Pixel Qi 7″ screens coming too

Pixel Qi is the single most revolutionary LCD screen technology, adding the benefits of low power, reflectivity, long form and outdoor readability all the while providing a switch on the side of the device to provide full color backlight mode to the screen as well. Thus combining Tablets with E-readers, making 50-hour tablet battery runtime without increasing battery size a possibility and bringing full color video, web browsing and full Android UIs to E-readers. Pixel Qi provides some insights into the reason why several tablet projects including the ones to use Pixel Qi have been delayed because of the success of the disruptive iPad:

Tight supply chain and 100% factory usage this spring and summer coupled with Apple’s disruptive iPad effectively had a 1-2 punch impact: delaying most tablet makers from coming to market as early as they wished. The situation has eased: the supply chain is more robust and factory capacity is widely available. Many of our device makers used this downtime to refine their designs with the result being even more exciting offerings that are highly differentiated from the iPad with options well beyond ATT for carriers. These device maker partners will be making more announcements coming this fall.

And so, a screen that I think would be perfect for the Archos 70 Internet Tablet, the Samsung Galaxy Tab and the Foxconn ARM11 Powered 7″ Tablet reference design, Pixel Qi is announcing the development of the 7″ Pixel Qi screen size. Here’s also who needs to absolutely use the 7″ Pixel Qi screen, the $35 Indian HRD Tablet Project!!!

We are developing a 7” screen for tablets and ereaders that is planned for mass production in H1 2011. Samples will be available earlier, perhaps by late Q4 2010.

In my opinion, everyone in the industry with 7″ and 10.1″ LCD tablet projects, all need to be a part of this revolution and need to use this amazing screen. Hopefully with mass manufacturing and large serious orders, the screen will be cheap enough to be close to the price of a normal LCD, hopefully the yield and the long term performance in use will be just as good as normal LCD.

A cross-licencing deal between the One Laptop Per Child non-profit and Pixel Qi has been announced in this press release:

As a result of the agreement, OLPC receives full license to all Pixel Qi “3qi” screen technology, including 70+ patents in process and all current and future IP developed by Pixel Qi for multi-mode screens. Pixel Qi is leading the design of new screens for OLPC’s next-generation XO laptops.

“A huge barrier to getting computers to mass use in the developing world is limited access to electricity. Pixel Qi is designing new screens for OLPC that will keep laptops going even longer between recharges and excel in long-form reading while providing color and video,” said Nicholas Negroponte, founder and chairman of One Laptop per Child.

Mary Lou Jepsen, founder and CEO of Pixel Qi, added, “OLPC’s focus on the need for low-cost, low-power devices led me to invent power-efficient LCD screens that are optimized for reading. Commercial tablets, notebook computers and smart phones have precisely the same needs. This is one of the few examples in which cutting-edge computer technology first deployed for developing nations benefits the developed world as well.”

A few questions I would have about this awesome partnership:

1. Will a version of XO 1.5 come with the 10″ 3Qi screen in the same form factor design?

2. If 3Qi only comes to OLPC starting with the ARM Powered XO 1.75, will it come in the 10″ size or will they cut a smaller 7.5″ version of it? My guess is to keep the costs low, they will pick the mass produced 10″ size there, and fit it inside of the same design just removing most of the screen bezel.

3. I can’t wait to learn what power consumption the XO 1.75 and XO 3.0 can run at using the Pixel Qi screen. Does it now run 50 hours on a battery? How much better are ARM Powered laptops like the XO 1.75 and ARM Powered tablets like the XO 3.0 at implementing the DCON processor process where the main processor can turn itself off completely when not in use?

4. Can anyone confirm that we will soon see Pixel Qi in the Marvell Moby Tablet project? Thus sooner see some implementation of tablets for education leading to the full release of the XO 3.0 tablet.

Is this the Pixel Qi Google Chromebook for long battery life and outdoor usability? 12.85″ 2560×1700 resolution touch screen? ARM Cortex-A15 preferably big.LITTLE, is this a Texas Instruments OMAP5 powered or does Samsung provide Google with an Octa Exynos5 for Chromebook already?

What do you think the price is going to be? My guess is $100 for non-touch non-Retina version and $200 for touch Retina version. The goal to basically make the ARM Powered Chrome OS the number 1 OS for laptops/desktops worldwide.

The cheapest 13.3″ Ultrabook killer, now selling at near $100, with a dual-core ARM Cortex-A9 processor WM8880 from VIA WonderMedia. Running smooth Android, but of course would be nicer with Chrome OS (or Chromium OS) and Ubuntu, on dual or triple boot. It has 1GB RAM, 8GB Flash, 1366×768 screen resolution, 5000mAh battery could do 10+ hours battery life if the display was a Pixel Qi ultra-low power sunlight readable LCD. This is where the upcoming Intel-killing Ultrabook-killing is going to come from.

My Google I/O 2013 expectations

I haven’t been able to buy a Google I/O ticket (servers crashed) and it doesn’t look like Google wants to invite me with a press badge (thus far), but here are my Google I/O May 15-17th 2013 expectations. I’ve not always been exact in my Google I/O predictions, see 2011 and 2012. Here’s what I’d announce at this point if I was running Google:

1. Google Smartwatch. (approx same “Wearable UI” as Google Glass) $199 BT 4.0.
2. Exynos5410/Tegra4/S800 Chromebooks launched. (prob 13.3″ $299, preferably with Pixel Qi 20-hour battery life).
3. Android 5 unveiled. intro “Full Chrome” on Android, Android Extension for Chrome OS too (that’s what I call “the merger”). Android 4.3 may get released at I/O with Android 5 release for months later.
4. Andy Rubin announced chief of new Google Internet of Things and Google Robots department (this is the new Google X project)
5. Google TV now part of Android 5. all HDMI/MHL turns any Android device to full Google TV UI, even HDMI throughput and IR blaster can be supported on most phones/tablets with adapter.
6. Google Gaming now serious. launches $99 Google Home Entertainment Console. It’s ARM Cortex-A15 with Mali-T678 GPU. Most Android games now mapped for TV controller game play. Exynos5410/Tegra4/S800 too.
7. Google Glass public release in 3 months for $499. $299 version by end of the year. Early Glass Explorers get choice of $1000 credit in Google Play Store or they get 2 extra Google Glass to give to friends/family.
8. Moto X Phones launched. $99/$199/$299 (540p-dual/720p-quad/1080p-octo) (maybe T4i/S600/T4) with no contract on T-Mobile in USA. unlocked worldwide. Waterproof, unbreakable, sunlight readable Pixel Qi LCD ultra long battery life.
9. Google Book launched. $99 WiFi e-reader with Google Books, Android E Ink front-lit based.
10. Google Play Subscriptions launched. $20/month for unlimited text/audio/video/apps (authors/devs can opt-out, users can pick any category separately at $5/month each, worldwide day-1). Overnight Google Play becomes by far biggest content platform worldwide.
11. Google+ 2.0. Now + gives personalized recommendations across web.

What am I forgetting? php/mysql wordpress/phpbb free hosting on Google App Engine? New YouTube monetization? White Space Global Google Voice (with launch of White Space modem in Moto X Phone)? The Cheaper $99 Nexus 7 Lite (RK3188 based)? Upgraded Google Arduino platform on ARM Cortex-M3? Google ARM Servers announcement for cheaper/better/cleaner cloud?

My video-blogging Highlights of CES 2013

Video-blogging last month at CES was awesome. I’ve posted 75 videos filming with the ultra-high quality Panasonic GH3 camera on a Tiffen Steadicam Merlin 2 with vest and using the Kopin Golden-i 3.8 for augmented video-blogging. At the CES 2013, there were some significant ARM related announcements, demonstrations and releases. Here are some of my highlights:

1. Samsung announcing the Samsung Octa ARM Cortex-A15 and ARM Cortex-A7 big.LITTLE processor. (I didn’t get to film any interviews about Samsung Octa yet, here’s the 1-hour Samsung keynote) I did film the Samsung 2013 HDTV series (which features perhaps a latest newest ARM processor built-in for its smart tv and features)

2. Nvidia announced Tegra4, quad-core ARM Cortex-A15 with companion-core, Nvidia’s new 72-core GPU, huge new features, the Nvidia Shield gaming console, Nvidia Grid for cloud-streamed high-end gaming.

3. Rockchip RK3188 quad-core ARM Cortex-A9 on 28nm HKMG process node launched for about Exynos4412-level performance in cheap tablets. Rockchip RK3066 dual-core ARM Cortex-A9 also reaching more devices on the market like the Archos Titanium tablet series at $7″ 1024×600 $119. 8″ 1024×768 $169, 9.7″ retina $249 and 10.1″ 1280×800 $199, the $169 Archos Gamepad and the Minix HDMI stick.

4. Allwinner A31 quad-core ARM Cortex-A7 in tablets being released: Archos launching Allwinner A31 Powered Platinum Tablet series in 8″ $199 and 9.7″ Retina $299, Allwinner A31 also shown by Eken and Sungworld.

5. Qualcomm launches Snapdragon 800 series, Qualcomm’s next generation ARM Processor records and playsback 4K video.

6. Nufront reaching maturity with their NS115 dual-core ARM cortex-A9 in many thin and light 7″ tablets coming out of China.

7. Infotmic launching iMAPx15 dual-core ARM Cortex-A5 processor for low-cost tablets and phones.

8. ARM Powered Set-top-boxes launched like new Marvell Powered Google TV boxes from netgear, Hisense, Asus and TCL and the OMAP4470 Powered Archos TV Connect.

9. E Ink on the backs of Smartphones being launched by Russian Yota Devices, can extend battery life on your smartphone by 10x (talking about weeks of battery life for your smartphone). E Ink was also showing their new awesome higher resolution and front-lit e-reader screens like in the awesome new Kindle Paperwhite (which I’ve got and that I’ll video-review) and the interesting super thin CST-01 E Ink wrist watch.

10. One Laptop Per Child’s latest XO-4 Touch ARM Powered laptop release with Neonode IR touch on Pixel Qi screen using Marvell’s Armada PXA2128 dual-core with companion core processor. OLPC also launches their XO learning OLPC XO Tablet, optimizing Android for productive use of Tablets in Childrens education worldwide.

11. Educational and fun robots: Lego Mindstorms EV3, Roboware Kimi and Parrot AR Drone 2.0

12. 1080p Android phones launched: ZTE Grand S LTE, Huawei D2, 6.1″ Huawei Mate, and Sony Xperia Z

13. 4K coming to the market: HiSense introducing $2000 4K 50″, $3500 65″ 4K and shows up to 110″ 4K TVs, Panasonic shows their first printed 4K OLED promising affordable high yield mass manufacturing, Panasonic showing an impressive 20″ 4K Tablet, Panasonic talking about 4K camcorder and showing a 4K 46″ and 20″ LCD TV, Sharp launching 32″ 4K Tablet, 60″ ICC-4K and showing 13.5″ 4K OLED, Samsung’s 4K 84″ TV for actual release, LG releasing 55″, 65″ and 84″ 4K and StreamTV upscaling and auto-3D.

14. Smartwatches: Italian startup I’m Watch has shipped over 30 thousand, Taiwanese WiMe shows one for $99.

15. Self-driving cars: Velodyne Lidar used by Google, Toyota showing Integrated Safety and Audi talking about their self-driving car.

16. Ubuntu Mobile OS launched, although I prefer their Ubuntu on Android implementation.

I’m Watch Android Watch, a growing market for smart Android watches

Italian startup I’m Watch thus far has sold 30 thousand Android wrist watches worldwide, with pre-orders for over 50 thousand units, their goal is to sell more than 100 thousand units this year. For now the watch runs on the Freescale i.MX233 and runs Android 2, with certain Android applications being optimized for the I’m Watch, Bluetooth synchronization with any Android or iPhone. Thus when you get calls, you can see caller ID on your watch, you can use the watch as Bluetooth headset, dial contacts, view email titles/senders, IM messages, plenty other Android notifications can be programmed to be shown on the watch. They have a gold version for 13000 euros, Titanium version for 800 euros, silver version for 1500 euros and the regular one has an MSRP of 350 euros ($389 in the USA, currently with a $150 discount, thus $239). They are also launching the I’m Here GPS Tracker, with a SIM card built-in, the GPS tracker can be used to track all types of things everywhere in the country. You can put it in the bicycle, inside the car, inside a bag, in pockets of children, etc, then it can localize the GPS tracker on your phone or on your I’m watch.

My video with I’m Watch filmed last year when they showed the first prototype of the device in 2011 got over 372 thousand views thus far, 351 comments, I guess my video-blogging kind of helped them launch the device. I’m looking forward to (I guess, and I’d like to see) the next version to be slimmer, lighter, using Bluetooth 4.0 low power, run on a faster Jelly Bean compatible ARM Processor, and run tons more Android notifications synchronizations apps, use a sunlight readable Pixel Qi LCD or an E Ink display for the display to stay turned on the whole day, thus whenever you glance at your watch, it always shows time, notifications and everything, no need to reach it and push the button to turn on the display.

I’d like to see the Android smart watch device market explode during 2013, I’d like to see real useful usage being demonstrated and proven to work perfectly on this type of device. They gave me an I’m Watch which I am now going to try to test over the next days and weeks and I’ll report and post some video reviews on my hopeful success in being able to use it to improve my overall Android and smart device usage and experience. 2013 is the year that wearable computing becomes a mass market success, this device is one of the first examples of what we can expect.
