$25 ARM Powered Desktop presented by Raspberry Pi Foundation

The Raspberry Pi Foundation (a UK non-profit) plans to develop, manufacture and distribute an ultra-low-cost computer, for use in teaching computer programming to children. They expect this computer to have many other applications both in the developed and the developing world. Their first product is about the size of a USB key, and is designed to plug into a TV or be combined with a touch screen for a low cost tablet. The expected price is $25 for a fully-configured system.

Here are the specs:

  • 700MHz ARM11
  • 128MB of SDRAM
  • OpenGL ES 2.0
  • 1080p30 H.264 high-profile decode
  • Composite and HDMI video output
  • USB 2.0
  • SD/MMC/SDIO memory card slot
  • General-purpose I/O
  • Open software (Ubuntu, Iceweasel, KOffice, Python)

And who exactly is it targeted at, well, students. It runs Ubuntu and will come preloaded with educational applications. Suggestions for it’s use and recommendations of software are welcome through email. Oh, and it’s purported to cost only $25… Head on over to their site Raspberry Pi.

Android virtualization on TI OMAP4 processors (dual core Cortex-A9)

A video released by B Labs today, features Android running as a virtualized guest operating system on Codezero® Embedded Hypervisor. Codezero® Embedded Hypervisor is a multicore virtualization solution for ARM Cortex-A9 processors and Linux based operating systems from B Labs.

Codezero is a multicore capable hypervisor that runs the Linux operating system in paravirtualized fashion. Codezero runs Linux applications, as well as Linux kernel guests in user mode, with memory protection, and requiring no hardware virtualization support. Due to the hardware protection mechanisms and capability based security, Linux guests run in full isolation from each other. Core partitioning, memory partitioning, network virtualization, and RTOS support are some of the other features offered by Codezero.

“Hacking away with Android” on Beyond The Keyboard takes a look at Android tablets, what they can do, what they are not yet capable of and what they should do in their opinion.
It has several nice and colorful graphics to compare and show the positioning, differences, gaps, possibilities and shortcomings of tablets in general and tablets compared with each other.

One of the “problems” with Android identified is the lack of hardware drivers for printers and scanners and the lack of support for multiple external drives.

Tablets brands compared are: Archos, Dell, Samsung and Creative. The iPad 1 is – due to its impact on the tablet market – added as a reference.

New smart refrigerator based on ARM

The brazilian subsidiary of Electrolux, together with ProFUSION Embedded Systems, have developed a new smart refrigerator called Infinity I-Kitchen that runs on a Freescale i.MX25 processor and was developed using Linux and the Enlightenment Foundation Libraries.

Here are features that could be provided in these intelligent fridges:
1. One-click wirelessly add missing ingredients to your Android device’s shopping list. Could also automatically place order for refill or for new ingredients with remote groceries delivery service.
2. It should somehow know what you have in the fridge. Preferably RFID would be used, but since that is not yet available. Somehow it should know. Maybe a built-in camera could figure from normal bar codes scanning, or manual input can be simplified.
3. Generate suggested recipes based on ingredients available, based on perrumption dates, based on calculating a healthy varied diet for each member of the house hold.
