ST-Ericsson L8580 3Ghz eQuad ARM Cortex-A9 SD-FOI processor launched

Posted by – February 26, 2013

ST-Ericsson launches their new 3GHz NovaThor L8580 processor based on the FD-SOI process technology, to minimize power consumption and increase the performance of the ARM Cortex-A9 processor. ST-Ericsson claims 50% lower power consumption, 35% faster CPU and a 20% faster GPU and multimedia accelerator. You can read more about the ST-Ericsson L8580 in the press release

and you can watch the official videos:

The FD-SOI=Fully Depleted-Silicon-On-Insulator technology is quite similar to Suvolta “PowerShrink” patented architecture.
    http://www.suvolta.com/

That making the conducting layer of the gate thinner but also use a thicker layer of insulator,
instead of making the gate smaller in width but higher as in the FinFET-gate transistor.

FD-SOI can be a step further instead of force the progress to FinFET, which is difficult even for Intel as making mitred corners and not round corners of the FinFET-gate.

    Any benchmarks available?

Ahahah… A bunch of marketing bullshit!!!! This CPU is a dual core A9 at 3ghz which is impressive and it has two modes not one they should really say its a dual core.
