$129 Exynos4412 Quad-core ARM Cortex-A9 development board!

Posted by – July 12, 2012

HardKernel presents their new ODROID-X, it’s a quite affordable open mobile development platform based on Exynos4412 ARM Cortex-A9 Quad Core (same as in the Samsung Galaxy S3) which shows PC-like performance.

Specs:

* Low-cost mobile software development platform
* Quad core ARM Cortex-A9 MPCore
* 6 x High speed USB2.0 Host port
* 10/100Mbps Ethernet with RJ-45 LAN Jack
* Audio codec with headphone jack and microphone jack
* Android 4.0.4 ICS

HardKernel pretty much is the official/unofficial Samsung Exynos/Hummingbird development kit maker out of South Korea. You can watch my previous videos when they launched the ODROID-A Exynos4210 Tablet Development Kit in March 2011, the ODROID-T in June 2011 and when they launched the original ODROID gaming development device in March 2010.

I guess you can consider this a bit like the official Exynos4412 development board, the Exynos4412 is one of the most powerful ARM platforms on the market today. If there’s a box, you may consider this an awesome ARM Powered desktop and set-top-box also. Can you run Jelly Bean, Ubuntu, Chromium OS and Windows RT on it? And it’s a games console, see how Super Mario Kart 64 is emulated smoothly on it:

And Ubuntu:

And if you’d like it in a tablet form factor, HardKernel provides the new $850 ODROID-Q with a built-in 3G modem.

I couldn´t see so much about the Ubuntu demonstration.

And it was a terrible music in the background.
This video do not say anything at all!

I just placed an order this morning. Has anyone else put in order for this product It sounds so awesome? I hope they can get 3D acceleration to work under Linux because they I would be able to play quake 3 and a few other awesome classic games.

I put an order also. Maybe I can use it as my main desktop instead of this noisy power consuming AMD E-350 micro-itx box that I am using right now. Let’s check on
    http://odroid.foros-phpbb.com/ and
http://com.odroid.com/sigong/nf_file_board/nfile_board.php for hopefully lots of easy to use “just copy the image file to the root of an SD card” types of software updates for it.

    Nice ;)

you two might also try putting the nightly Linaro SIMD optimized Experimental Builds  http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1708982&page=99 on there too and tell us what speeds you can get when they arrive.

im not sure if you need the http://www.hardkernel.com/renewal_2011/products/prdt_info.php?g_code=G133999328931

CP2104: USB to Serial UART bridge IC with 1.8V interface
Molex5268-04 connector and cable assemblyMicro-USB cable though for debugging that !

and i assume the addon THGBM5G7A2JBAIR 16Gbyte eMMC Version 4.41 interface with 19nm NAND from Toshiba  50Mhz 8bit DDR fast interface is faster than the internal sdcard,

im not sure the external extra RT5370 is a cost-effective, highly integrated USB Wi-Fi single chip containing an 802.11n MAC and baseband, a 2.4 GHz RF, PA, LNA and T/R switch on a single die.

It supports a 150 Mbps PHY addon was a good idea rather than put it directly on the carrier board, but i suppose that’s how they make up their profits from the addon’s there so its all cool.

  • dave

its using the mali400 quad gfx cores so i dont see any problems there as Linaro SIMD optimized builds use that.

my other post got flagged for spam because i edited it for the links to the other useful addons  oops LOL

  • dave

WTF charbax why are you deleting my Linaro/mali posts

  • http://ARMdevices.net/ Charbax

I’m not! Maybe disqus thinks you are posting spam for some reason?

  • http://ARMdevices.net/ Charbax

There, I went into the Disqus spam folder and removed your two posts from that spam folder. I never seen that before.

  • http://www.cnx-software.com/ Cnxsoft

Many anti-spam systems equal 2 links in a comment to spam.

  • dave

hi Cnxsoft, we don’t see you post very often other than on your site OC shame,we need the post PC/low power ARM  sites to work together more.

whats that faster  CoSy compiler development system , looks interesting if it open and free , never head of it before

  • http://ARMdevices.net/ Charbax

I re-unspammed it again, I wish Google would just acquire Disqus and fix their anti-spam stuff.

  • http://ARMdevices.net/ Charbax

Sorry I didn’t see that you posted about this board before me, I got it on an email tip. Now all the big blogs are linking to it but of course linking to some other sites as source.

  • http://www.cnx-software.com/ Cnxsoft

Hardkernel contacted me directly to post about their board, that’s why I could post earlier. Concerning links, that’s OK, it happens, especially since Google seems to have problem referencing my posts before some RSS aggregators.

  • http://www.cnx-software.com/ Cnxsoft

Between reading news, write blog posts, playing with software and a few other things, I don’t always have time to comment much.

Concerning CoSy, when I started writing about it, I thought I would find more interesting info. But it’s mainly for reference, it’s the company (ACE) product so it’s not free, it should even be quite expensive. It’s a system to develop compilers.

I clicked on the link you posted Dddd but the terga 3 is only 900mhz Instead of 1.3Ghz that most smartphones and tablet with terga 3 are clocked at. I wonder what the terga 3 mini-itx board is priced at?

  • http://www.cnx-software.com/ Cnxsoft

They may have reduced the frequency in order to operate in a larger temperature range, or possibly to extend the longevity of the board, since it’s probably aimed at embedded systems for the industry. This board should be expensive, it won’t be your $99 OUYA, or $129 ODROID-X. I don’t think Kontron sells to individuals.

  • dave

yeah it looks like an industrial use type board, shame about the low clocks as its got a nice selection of generic ports too
1 x mPCIe ,1 x mPCIe/mSATA,1 x mPCIe for 3G (oboard SIM socket), haven’t they ever heard of generic and cheap mini PCI slots ;)

someone really needs to show them and the other industrial vendors how to lay out a far better PCB for 2012 use though yuck ;)

  • Lolo

Good motherboard but… no USB3, no SATA, not enough RAM for me(I need 4Gb min) and the MAli400 GPU driver for Ubuntu is very immature.

  • Robert Jakiel

All this is awesome news!  O-Droid, Kontron, Ouya, Raspberry Pi, etc…  This gets ARM architectures into the hands of devs cheaply and in doing so expands ARM support dramatically in a very short time.  With the latest addition of 64 bit ARM support in Debian, although no hardware exists publicly yet, it gets devs a head start and ready for the future of ARM computing.  It will only be a matter of time and a short time at that before ARM powered laptops and desktops start hitting the market.  Let alone set top boxes like the Google Nexus Q, Vizio Google TV and Ouya.  It’s a wonderful time to be an ARM enthusiast!

  • runeks

Do you have any experience with quad core A9 development boards? I’m looking for such a board now, but I don’t know what to settle on. My greatest concern isn’t really the hardware (though SATA and 64 bit wide RAM bus *would* be nice to have), it’s more the software that worries me. Ie. if some software errors in the Linux I run on the device will be present that I’m unable to solve myself. But $129 (plus shipping) is almost so cheap that I’m willing to take the chance.

Do you have any experience with quad core A9 boards, and how stable they are running as servers? Anyone you can recommend?

  • http://ARMdevices.net/ Charbax

Consider $129 does not include all the cables, adapters, etc, I spent $254 to pre-order this system with all the cables and stuff that I think I need. You have to consider which platform you think is going to be best supported. I think Exynos4412 likely is going to get great support. But who knows, maybe this board isn’t going to get as much support as perhaps some other Exynos4412 board, I think it’ll be fine though, I dunno. I don’t know of cheaper Tegra3, i.MX6 or HiSilicon K3V2 boards, not yet.

  • runeks

Right. As far as I can see that’ll be $222 for my needs, including $30 shipping. Still, pretty good. Where are you located Charbax? I live in Denmark, and I’m afraid I’ll have to pay VAT on it when it enters my country. But I still think it’s a good price for a quad core board.

So what kind of graphics can we expect on the ouya, that’s what I’m curious about!
