When will Nokia release Android devices?

Posted by – January 23, 2010

Hackers have installed Android as a dual-boot on a Maemo Linux based Nokia N900. Although Maemo Linux for sure is better than Symbian, I think Nokia might soon just as well release Android based devices. Android is free and open-source, it doesn’t really make sense for Nokia to stubbornly stay with their own OS even if their own LiMo stuff also is open-source. My guess is Nokia engineers are working on Android and that it’s only a political matter until Nokia officially would announce Android based products.

Nokia makes great hardware. But software-wise they're falling behind. Why not take advantage of the success of Android by facilitating its use on their devices? These days, it's all about the apps, and there are very few apps available for Nokia's Maemo.

Yup I agree. Nokia could probably make some of the best value and most popular Android based phones if they decided to release them. They can include Ovi-store or whatever other exclusive services that they want simply as exclusive Android apps.

@charbax, Nokia is NO LiMo member and Maemo is certainly not LiMo-based if that is what you meant. Maemo is based on Debian and is completely built from scratch by Nokia (and was first used on the Nokia 770 in 2005 [called ITOS2005]). The LiMo foundation was founded in 2007?!

I think that Nokia will not release any Android device, the company will try to focus on own devices Maemo for premium devices and Symbian for other. Mobile phone makers are seeing a opponent in google now when Nexus one was released. I think HTC and Google will try to push Android more and more into market but other mobile makers will try to use it less and try to push own platforms like Samsung with Baidu for example. Even Quallcomm resurrected it's Brew platform to have something just in case.
