Paper Battery ultrathin flexible batteries and supercapacitors

Posted by – November 16, 2014

The Paper Battery Company develops super capacitors with very high energy and power density and flexible form factors. These devices recharge very quickly, and hold enough energy to take care of peak performance usage. The form factors that they are developing give designers more choices and options on how to fit power in previously unusable spaces. Applications for the Paper Battery technology range from mobile wearable devices to backup power in computing. They have two product lines that meet a varied set of needs, in all cases they can relieve battery anxiety, improve performance, and enable smaller, lighter products and reduce costs for the customer.

Rockchip RK3288 runs Android 5.0 Lollipop

Posted by – November 14, 2014
Category: Rockchip, Android

Rockchip shows Android 5.0 Lollipop running on their RK3288 Quad core ARM Cortex-A17 with Mali-T764, here’s Rockchip’s press release about Android 5.0 on RK3288 (English version using Google translate). This may be an early test version of the new Android 5.0 on RK3288, I do not know how long it may take before Rockchip will be ready to update Lollipop to RK3288 devices on the market. I also expect that the work to update to Android 5 may be somewhat different on the Tablet and on the Set-top-box bringing real Android TV 5.0 to the RK3288 Android Set-top-box market!

$149 RK3288 Chromebooks from Lenovo and Asus coming soon according to Digitimes

Posted by – November 14, 2014

Potentially released as soon as next month by Lenovo, Digitimes reports that Lenovo and Asus are preparing to release $149 Chromebooks based on the Rockchip RK3288 Quad-core ARM Cortex-A17 with Mali-T764. The rumored screen size is 11.6″ according to Digitimes.

To be seen if those include 2GB or 4GB RAM. I think 4GB RAM would be nice, even if that adds a few $ to BOM cost. Perhaps they can just let consumers choose to double RAM to 4GB if they just pay $10 or $20 more. I think it would also be nice if they also provide a larger $169 13.3″ skew. Both with 1366×768 matte displays would be good I think. At least one, or multiple SD card slots for storage, HDMI output, at least 2 USB3 would be nice.

It was here on ARMdevices.net on June 5th that I was the first post a video about the RK3288 Chromebook and back on April 13th about Chrome OS for RK3288 on the development board.

I think if the performance is smooth, if the keyboard/mousepad/display qualities are great, if the designs by Lenovo and Asus are classy “like a Macbook Air” and not purposefully cheap looking, the RK3288 Chromebooks may become more popular than RK3288 in Android Tablets, and Chrome OS on RK3288 Set-top-boxes may also be more popular than RK3288 Android Set-top-boxes. If priced right, and if mass produced at absolute maximum capacity by brands like Lenovo and Asus, I think this could potentially become one of the most popular laptops in the world, potentially overtaking Wintel laptops faster than anyone can imagine.

Weibu shows Intel/Rockchip XMM6321 dual-core ARM Cortex-A5 with 3G

Posted by – November 5, 2014

Weibu is a PCB Design House, usually they mostly worked on designing x86 dektop motherboards using Intel x86 and AMD x86, but now with Intel making ARM in the Rockchip XMM6321, Weibu now also works on this ARM PCB design, to be used in very cheap 7″ 3-G connected Android tablets to be sold around the world. Take a tour here in their design house.

Intel makes ARM Processor in $40 Rockchip XMM6321 Tablets at Skyth-Tek PCB Design House

Posted by – October 31, 2014

Intel is making their first Dual-core ARM Cortex-A5 processor with Rockchip called the Rockchip XMM6321 highly integrated 2-chip with baseband/RF/analog/GPS/WiFi/Bluetooth in the second chip, with an ARM Mali-400 GPU, targetted at sub-$40 3G-enabled Phablets, manufactured at TSMC (because the Intel Fab doesn’t manufacture 28nm anymore) and designed by the team coming from Intel’s Infineon ARM baseband group, here the Rockchip XMM6321 is being launched at the Skyth-Tek PCB Design House in Shenzhen China. Where they are now launching mass production of these Intel/Rockchip $40 ARM Phablets together with the ODM Firstview. You can read the press release about XMM6321 here.

I have been predicting that this moment would happen for years. The next step is for Intel to also manufacture some high-end ARM Processors for Rockchip in their own 14nm Fab.

The Android Phablet market is growing very rapidly, the extremely affordable Phablet may become the first or main device that a Billion people use to access the Internet, as the potential market growth for the low-cost Android Phablet is so huge, especially in developing countries, it’s only normal that Intel must try to be a part of that market by letting their Infineon baseband division release this ARM Processor and to do it in partnership with Rockchip, as Rockchip has experience over the past 3-4 years of the explosive Tablet market growth in powering millions of affordable ARM Powered devices for the international mass market.
