Over this past week, I filmed at some of the factories and PCB design houses that are ramping up mass production of their new Allwinner A33 with Mali400MP2 based tablet designs, including Yifang, Neostra, Aikun, Storex, ChipHD and iNet. Allwinner sells the complete SoC at only $4, to that the PCB designs and factories add all the other components that make up a tablet, reaching prices below $33 for 7″ tablets with 1024×600 displays when bought in bulks of more than 5000 pieces (as you can see in the Neostra video). Allwinner positions their new A33 chipset as the new entry-level performance to be expected in the entry-level Android tablets to be sold worldwide. Not only improving the multi-core performance, Allwinner has also improved power consumption through optimizing the DDR RAM system, an advanced fabrication process, optimized DVFS technology, and a unique Talking Standby mode that allows extremely low power consumption during voice calls. Mali400MP2 GPU architecture. A33 is pin-compatible with A23 dual core, offers 1080p video playback and capture, Integrated MIPI DSI controller, up to 1280×800, SmartColor display technology and an Integrated Hi-Fi audio codec.

I filmed Eken many times and on January 11th 2012 at their booth it was the first time I heard about Allwinner, Eken was the first Tablet company I had seen implementing the Allwinner A10. This probably means that Eken has a close relationship with Allwinner to always implement their newest processors early into their tablet manufacturing.

This video shows the progression of 5 PCBA designs throughout Allwinner A80T’s solution development cycle:
1) Initial dev board: a fully-expandable performance evaluation board used for early-stage driver development and IC performance optimization.
2) A80 OptimusBoard: a small-size development board used for non-tablet application SDK development.
3) Tablet form factor reference board: a development platform used primarily for Android porting optimization, early-stage reliability testing, and solution reference design.
4) Customer tablet boards: a mass-production tablet designed by customer based on Allwinner reference design.
5) CubieBoard 8: a development board designed by customer based on Allwinner reference design.
This video shows one of the automated performance testing tools used during A80’s big.LITTLE tuning process. big.LITTLE is an innovative technology used to balance Cortex-A7’s low power with Cortex-A15’s high performance. An important part of the tuning process is frequent regression testing – that is, checking how performance and power consumption are affected by firmware updates. In this video, a simple automated benchmark test is running after a firmware update.
Quick-and-dirty tests like these allow software engineers to more efficiently check system performance and power consumption after low-level parameter changes.
This video shows one of the GPU tuning tools (PVRTune) used during A80 development. To run the tests, an A80T tablet is hooked up to a host computer running PVRTune. A tester can then operate different use cases on the tablet (scrolling through the GUI, playing games, etc) while seeing how GPU load is affected on the host computer’s PVRTune display window. In this video, we see how the GPU’s 3D engine is loaded while scrolling through Android’s stock GUI. When performance bottlenecks are spotted, this tool can help engineers better distinguish CPU/GPU root causes, increasing debugging efficiency.
The first tablet based on the Allwinner A80 is now shipping out of China! It’s the Onda V989, using the nice ultra slim iPad Air display, this tablet looks extremely sleek and nice. Here Allwinner is showing off some of their new Smart features, including the cool “always on” sensor that wakes the device up with just a double-touch of the display (similar to LG knock-on feature, and similar somewhat to previous Moto X sensor fusion stuff), they also have a few head-tracking Smart functions that they added in settings, taking advantage of their hardware accelerated head-tracking feature: Smart Pause pauses video when you look away from the screen, Smart Rotate does not rotate the screen when you for example lie down on the bed, Smart Stay means the screen always stays on if you are still looking at it when the dimming setting kicks in (it overrides screen dimming). More specs, pricing, and other stuff to follow, let me know what you might like me to test on this tablet in a next video about it.
Here at the Allwinner Headquarters in Zhuhai China, few months before they open their brand new giant R&D headquarters just next to the one they are currently at. Their new headquarters can include more than 1000 employees, 85% of their employees at their Zhuhai headquarters are engineers, working on chip design, PCB optimization, Android optimization/updates/features, product development, customer support and much more! Check back on http://ARMdevices.net in the next few days for a range of videos filmed at the Allwinner headquarters!
