Freescale i.MX6 Quad-core reference design at FTF 2011

Posted by – June 21, 2011

This is an Interview with Rajeev Kumar, consumer product line manager for Freescale’s Multimedia Applications Division, demonstrating the first prototype reference design board running the first sample of Freescale’s new i.MX 6Quad processor platform. This is the industry’s first Quad-core ARM Cortex-A9 SoC combined with a full 64bit memory bus. I try to ask Rajeev Kumar about the performance, the features, the design. They use triple-play graphics designed in partnership with Vivante. Look forward to more videos here on http://ARMdevices.net about the i.MX 6 processor.

Finally! They will get to market a year after their competitors, but well finally! I really like i.MX6 Quad…

Charbax, please, poke them about free graphics drivers at every interview! It is indeed the biggest problem with all ARM manufacturers – messy linux graphics support. Doesn’t matter how many triangles per second do they claim if it doesn’t support even vsync without instability and slowdowns (as it is at OMAP3).

I will try to ask them about that in my next video.

Did you get any information on the pitch of the chip, is it 0.4, 0.65 or 0.8mm?

Please also ask them about what the power consumption of the quadcore is like compared to the dual and single core for typical usage scenarios (100% CPU and 100% GPU load, Video encoding, etc. … we already know ~400mW for just Video playback but then the CPU should be mostly idle) !
    Maybe also compared to i.MX5x.
Not sure if they will tell you but please ask them anyway ;-)

Performance of the external Mem Bus (in GByte/s or Clock Frequency) would also be nice to know.

  • Rick

For the dual and single cores yes, but there are no quadcore A9s on the market today as far as I know. A few first Devices with a Quadcore A9 (like Sony NGP with some custom SoC) may come end of this year  …

Well the i.MX6 won’t really be in products until sometime next year, barring any unforeseen delays.  While besides the Sony Vital there Nvidia will be offering the quad core Tegra 3 and has at least 10 products lined up for release before the end of this year.

We should also see TI’s OMAP 5, Qualcomm’s Snapdragon APQ8064, and possibly other quad core offerings some time next year as well.
