Android 2.2 Froyo on Archos Gen8 Tablets

Posted by – October 28, 2010

I have been secretly testing this for the last week (together with cajl of http://jbmm.fr and Thocan of http://archoslounge.net), it works pretty much awesome. Few optimizations and few bug fixes still to be done before Archos can release this cool firmware update.

Also check my video review of the Archos 70 Internet Tablet in multiple parts: Part 1 and Part 2.

I’m very excited to buy an Archos 70 when they become available in the U.S. Since you seem to be the only person on the internet who has one, could you tell me if they work with headsets with inline microphone (like iPhone and iPod Touch do), or if only the microphone built into the device can be used for VOIP calls. Obviously, I’d prefer not to hold a 7″ device up to my head while making Skype calls.

I don’t know, I don’t have that kind of headphones. I tried with Bluetooth headphones (with built-in mic), that works super for VOIP calls. I’ll try with a $20 bluetooth headset eventually.

Hi Charbax: I’m wondering if you have played with the 250GB version (of the Archos 70). Being that the 250GB is a hard drive, do you know if it takes time to boot up (or is it “instant-on”?) or is there a lag when going between apps or going into folders to find/watch videos? Besides the obvious storage difference, I am essentially wondering if there is a user experience that is different between the (standard) hard drive version and the flash version of the Archos 70. Thanks in advance!

I haven’t tried the 250GB. Normally the OS and index files are hosted on ROM flash memory anyways, so just as fast as flash only version. Hard drives should only be used when accessing video, photo and audio files or also sometimes used to store apps. Bootup should be same, basically instant resume on power press as it just goes in standby unless you reboot when updating firmware.

Thanks very much!! Also, do you know what the max size MicroSD card that can be used on the flash version?
