$88 5″ Android Tablet: Acorp EM501R

Posted by – June 10, 2010

Acorp is releasing the EM501R, 4.8″ Android Rockchip RK2808 powered tablet to be sold at only $88 (for distributors buying at least 1000 pieces). This is the Acorp 5″ Rockchip 600mhz ARM9 based Android tablet. This sized tablet fits just fine in most pockets and provides better view of web browser, video and apps than on a 3.5″ phone.

how much would it cost to buy just 1?

It depends who gets to distribute it. If WalMart or some other major supermarket takes it and brands it, if they for example buy 100 thousand units tomorrow and get a discount, if Mpeg codec licences can be gotten for cheap, if the yield is good, shipping is done on cheap containers. My guess is it could still be sold at $99 as a promotion, including all the taxes. WalMart and Costco does that to get people into their stores.

On the other hand if a smaller reseller orders just few thousands of these to sell them on ebay, it could be around $130 or below that per unit plus shipping, without any real warranties, especially as some resellers sell without codec licences from China on ebay (I don't really know if that is legal).

It can really go both ways. And really, it is going to be up to which reseller decides to buy it and what they decide to sell it for.

Android 2.2 is doubtful to say the least. There's a reason why Rockchip devices are all 1.5 right now.
