Being tethered allows it to be lighter since it doesn’t fly with a battery, it can fly for an unlimited amount of time getting power through the cable, it’s safe because it is tethered not needing on board GPS, on board computer vision, and more. A live low-latency uncompressed Full HD video downlink enables effective framing and live broadcast using an external HDMI or SDI port. The Fotokite Phi in the consumer version, more compact, lighter and most affordable GoPro-carrying quadcopter yet that was successfully crowdfunded for $249 each at Indiegogo.

Van Gogh comes alive by The COI Site Tokyo University of the Arts

Charbax — Sun, 09 Apr 2017 00:31:21 +0000

The COI Site Tokyo University of the Arts created uses this high quality reproduction of the Vincent Van Gogh self-portrait and they program features to superimpose using an Epson LCD projector to make it look like the painting comes alive. The effect is very impressive. Perhaps for Tokyo 2020 they should exhibit a whole range of famous Art reproductions and statues and have them all come alive, also using sensors, cameras, artificial intelligence smart conversationals systems, to have all the art pieces talk themselves about who painted the originals, stories about why it was painted like that, funny interactions where the painting can talk to you and react to you walking by. The applications seem endless as when the projector projects white it just functions as lighting on the reproduction, but then when those animations subtly superimprose it can really give the effect of movement in the painting.

SkiAR Augmented Reality for Outdoor Winter Sports

Charbax — Tue, 15 Mar 2016 17:55:12 +0000

Winter sports like skiing and snowboarding are often group activities. Groups of skiers and snowboarders traditionally use folded paper maps or board-mounted larger-scale maps near ski lifts to aid decision making: which slope to take next, where to have lunch, or what hazards to avoid when going off-piste. To enrich those static maps with personal content (e.g., pictures, prior routes taken, or hazards encountered), Anton Fedosov (twitter: @antonfedosov), HCI researcher, Università della Svizzera italiana (twitter: @USI_INF), Lugano, Switzerland developed SkiAR, a wearable augmented reality system that allows groups of skiers and snowboarders to share such content in-situ on a printed resort map while on the slope.

Nick Hayek, CEO of Swatch, unveils Belenos Battery, 50% higher capacity, flat and flexible

Charbax — Tue, 15 Mar 2016 09:33:06 +0000

Belenos Clean Power, a subsidiary of Swatch Group, has developed a new type of battery based on vanadium, with electrical energy storage capacity up to 50 to 100% higher capacity than the battery technologies that exist today. Electric cars and drones might start using Belenos batteries starting this year already, production of Belenos batteries will start this Summer by Swatch Group subsidiary Renata in Switzerland, further Belenos batteries may also get produced in Asia depending on the demand. George Clooney and the Swiss astronaut Claude Nicollier are on Belenos’s board of directors, Belenos is 51% owned by Swatch Group and will be put on the Hong Kong stock market with a possible valuation between 5 and 20 Billion dollars. The goal is to power Swatch Smartwatches and other wearables with the Belenos battery, creating a Smartwatch and wearable technologies that never needs to be recharged.

As a half-Swiss, I hope Swatch will release smart watches to put Apple Watch to shame, made in a really smart way, with Swatch’s own ultra low power displays or with E Ink behind the dials of a Swatch Sistem51 based automatic watch, and with low power Bluetooth and Novasentis flexible actuator vibrations in the wrist band. Part of the watch may function as energy harvester, perhaps solar on the watch casing/sides, to recharge the Bluetooth low energy and E Ink or other low power display.

They take care of 100% of the insurance for when your car is used by a user. You can choose the price per hour, price per day, you can pick and choose which people or which kind of people can use it (how verified each user is, I guess). Some regions can add up to thousands of electric cars on that car sharing network. The price can be as low as $4 per hour, you can park it based on where the owner wants to park it, or it can also happen that you can just park it wherever you want.

Top-15 CeBIT 2011 videos

2. Worlds First Honeycomb Laptop, while I had seen the Asus Eee Pad Transformer a couple times at previous conferences. It was awesome to see it run Honeycomb for the first time. The idea of Honeycomb running on ARM Powered tablets is awesome. It would be best if those ARM Powered Honeycomb laptops were cheaper, thinner and lighter. But that will come too.

3. Microsoft and Open Source, an interview with the head of open source activities at Microsoft Germany, about the ways in which Microsoft is being more open towards open source. Does that mean Windows 8 for ARM will be open source and free?

4. Zinwell does ARM Powered $70 Android Set-top-box, Zinwell is one of the leading Realtek based media player makers and are now focusing on designing the ARM Powered set-top-box for Android and Google TV support and they need sufficient processor power to render full web browsing experiences as well as rich user interfaces, even gaming as well as all video codecs and streaming.

5. Asus Eee Pad Memo Tablet and MeMic Bluetooth Phone Remote, cool dual-core Qualcomm MSM8260 based 7″ Android tablet from Asus. It fits nicely in any jacker pocket, and can use a bluetooth remote for voice calls.

6. Yifang M707, Android Tablet with infrared pen input, a cool feature, adding infrared sensor to the side of tablets, to scan in real-time the scribbling on paper.

7. Kinstone $95 7″ ARM Cortex-A9 AmLogic (single core) Tablet, this could be the cheapest ARM Cortex-A9 tablet already, though this AmLogic is a single core design, performance should be great.

8. Shenzhen Ider shows $60 Android Cortex-A8 Set-top-box, one of the cheapest ARM Cortex-A8 set-top-boxes for Android and possibly Google TV that I have heard about.

9. Fun video at Shenzhen AUDE comparing x86 with ARM in tablet design, shows how the ARM Powered tablet is 3x lighter, 3x cheaper, 3x thinner than the design based on x86.

10. ARM Powered Tablets by Shuttle, Shuttle is building tablets (and soon Laptops/Desktops) based on ARM chips from Texas Instruments, Nvidia, VIA and others. Watch for their actual compact ARM Powered motherboards at the end of this video.

15. Netronix 9.7″ Freescale i.MX51 Android Tablet, same screen, same kind of performance as iPad1, but could retail at $250.

Peter Sunde, co-founder of ThePirateBay.org and Flattr.com, at CeBIT 2011

Charbax — Sun, 06 Mar 2011 16:12:12 +0000

A few years ago, Peter Sunde together with a bunch of cool guys in Sweden started thepiratebay.org, which is kind of a fun site where people can find torrent files for all kinds of things. It has been in the media. There is a chance that you know about that site. Peter Sunde is very much involved in the politics around filesharing on the Internet, the politics of media and content, he has spoken at the european union and RIAA and MPAA have a bunch of lawsuits going after him and his team. He tried to buy a country once to implement freedom of filesharing rules there or to build a server farm there, but instead thepiratebay is hosted around the world and can never be shut down and nobody knows who controls it. Those guys are fun (read their Legal Threats page). What do you think about Copyrights, Piracy and those kinds of things? Write your opinions in the comments.

Microsoft and Open Source?

Charbax — Wed, 02 Mar 2011 20:39:19 +0000

I thought it was fun to see a Microsoft booth in the Open Source park at CeBIT 2011, so I went jokingly to ask if it was a mistake, turns out Microsoft has lots of things going on with Open Source around the world. “Microsoft is changing into a more open company”, does that mean Windows 8 for ARM will be open source and free? Does Microsoft prepare Azure OS to compete with Chrome OS? Should Microsoft and Nokia simply take Honeycomb and improve on that and call it Microdroid?
