In the smart Automotive cabin, the information required for smart travel becomes part of the actual scene with the help of AR technology, the head-up display (HUD) can project useful information such as speed per hour and navigation onto the front windshield for the driver’s reference. In addition, BOE replaces the conventional in-car LCD with flexible display. The 12.3″ three-unit flexible display is backed by the OLED pixel compensation circuit technology developed by BOE, which can effectively improve the brightness uniformity of mid-sized OLED displays and provide better audiovisual experience for car users, BOE applies flexible AMOLED displays to transparent A-pillars, rearview mirrors to solve the problem of driver’s blind spots in automotive design. NXP i.MX 6SoloX (UDOO Neo) with RPMsg Protocol, a Multicore demo with Linux running on A9, Zephyr running on M4 – This demonstration shows how to leverage asymmetric co-processors of modern SoCs on the example of i.MX6SoloX and Udoo Neo board. The embedded Cortex-M4 core is running Zephyr RTOS which implements various low speed serial peripherals (UART, SPI, I2C) in software using GPIO. Cortex-M4 communicates with the embedded Cortex-A9 core running Linux Kernel using the RPMsg protocol. On the Linux side a kernel module is used to present implemented serial peripherals to the user space as regular serial, SPI or I2C interface (e.g. /dev/ttySx). The benefits of such approach consist in the possibility of extending existing set of peripherals without any additional hardware cost and the possibility to place selected peripheral at virtually any available GPIO pin. Thanks to exporting the interfaces to the user space, it can be accessed for example by a Python script.

Ampere’s introduction of eMAG to the market concludes and follows on the X-Gene3 design started out by AppliedMicro. eMAG processors targets server workloads capable of taking advantage of a high core count with high throughput. First generation eMAG processors are based on the Skylark microarchitecture, a design that started out by AppliedMicro. Fabricated on TSMC’s 16FF+ process, those processors feature up to 32 cores operating at up to 3.3 GHz. Huawei unveiled their Huawei Mate X flexible foldable phone, the best such flexible phone demonstration yet, though they launch it way way too expensive at €2299. On the other hand they were able to position the flexible display based phone as the ultimate phone one would be able to get, pushing the industry towards making this form factor popular sooner rather than later. OXI on Gemini PDA, Cosmo Communicator, PC Mode UI with Windows apps on Android on external display

At MWC 2019, Planet Computers CEO Dr Janko Mrsic-Flogel introduces Auxens who has ported OXI OS to the Gemini PDA and same will be available on the upcoming Cosmo Communicator. While the potential for Displayport support on the Cosmo Communicator is maybe yet still to be confirmed, as the Cosmo will start shipping to their Indiegogo backers in June.

OXI on Lapdock, runs Windows 10 apps in Android

Laurent Alaguero of Auxens shows their latest version of OXI the Desktop productivity user interface for Android phone’s external displays, such as here demonstrating running on the BQ Aquaris X2 Pro which has Displayport USB Type-C support. Here demonstrating OXI running with the Lapdock launched on crowdfunding on Indiegogo starting at $100. OXI can bring in and run Windows 10 apps in resizable Windows inside of this Android user interface, no need to boot all the way into a Windows 10 remote desktop just pulling in the needed Windows apps over the Internet, using virtualization, streaming, with servers that can nearby and served through Enterprise’s existing Windows server infrastructure. The Windows 10 apps can feel like they are running locally on Android with minimal lag. Auxens is now reaching out to Smartphone manufacturers to try to pre-install OXI on shipping phones with Displayport USB Type-C support. Hopefully they can integrate by getting some API access with http://shadow.tech cloud PC service and hopefully OXI comes with the Cosmo Communicator that is being developed and which I filmed here

Cosmo Communicator display shown at CES 2019

Planet Computers are showing their latest prototype of the Cosmo Communicator now crowdfunding for $569 on Indiegogo here which is an upgrade of their very successful Gemini PDA which I used as my main phone for the past 9 months and you can see some videos I filmed about it here the Cosmo Communicator upgraded the CPU to MediaTek P70, Memory, the keyboard gets backlit, an external OLED display is added to be able to use the phone without having to open it, a fingerprint reader is added that is a combo with being a selection button, an external high quality 24 megapixel camera is now also default. The new design also allows for better antennas for a stronger LTE signal and possibly also for a stronger Wi-Fi and Bluetooth support too.

LAPSCREEN with faytech, 12.5″ Type-C Display, runs off DP phone/laptop/anything

Here demonstrating Lapscreen with a Huawei P20, using the Smartphone’s CPU/Memory?Connectivity and Battery to power the LAPSCREEN with its 12.5” FHD display, available both non-touch for around $200 and touch version for about $300, shipping in January. The concept is for Lapscreen to be so thin and lightweight it can fit inside an A4-envelope. LAPSCREEN displays the Huawei P20 either in work station mode with all the office tools or one can play any mobile games on a large 12.5” screen instead of the display of a tiny mobile phone. With just around 5W power consumption, the mobile phone’s battery is enough to also run the LAPSCREEN for several hours on a charge, there is also a PD Power Delivery port on the Lapscreen to power the Lapscreen and charge the mobile phone at the same time.

Michél also presents the set up of using LAPSCREEN on different macbooks, showing how one can connect up to 4 LAPSCREENS to just one macbook. There is also an HDMI input on every LAPSCREEN, to connect any HDMI source, any media player, notebook, WiFi/Miracast-dongle, even game consoles like the Nintendo Switch or the iPhone via a lightning to HDMI-cable are perfectly presented on the LAPSCREEN too.

$100 Lapdock on Indiegogo

The future of Laptops will not have a powerful CPU in them but will be modular when you buy them, they can be powered by your phone, or you can buy a small compact ARM Powered internal or external Type-C Stick to run them off of. Laptops are all about getting a great keyboard, mouse and display, but the CPU, Memory, Connectivity, those things can be swapped according to progress in the industry. I will be posting updates on this project at http://Lapdock.net and on the Updates tab at http://igg.me/at/lapdock if this project gets funded by at least $100 thousand, then the suppliers in Shenzhen China will be able to deliver the Lapdock at this price. If Lapdocks can become a larger success with a lot of demand then prices will be able to reach sub-$100 for high quality components, high quality keyboard, mouse pad, display and batteries also that last at least 20 hours on a charge. With a lot of support, this concept will also bring high performance and affordable USB Type-C Sticks to run all sorts of productivity user interfaces based on Android (such as the OXI UI) or Linux OSes or even Microsoft can bring Windows support to the Lapdock. This form factor could also bring the developers who use development boards closer to the mass market consumers, as all work done around the development boards of the future (very compact and affordable USB Type-C Sticks) will directly be able to impact also how end consumers can use devices for actual real work and productivity. The Lapdock will also move Smartphone market more towards their “PC Mode” as Samsung and Huawei already support each their PC Modes, and that is great because Samsung and Huawei are the two biggest Smartphone manufacturers in the world, yet most consumers don’t even know that the PC Mode is there. With Lapdocks, the performance of latest 7nm ARM Processors in phones will be tuned further for multi-window, multi-tasking and for running more advanced productivity apps on Android. 2019 will hopefully be the year where ARM Powered productivity finally reaches mass adoption and the mass market and I think that the Lapdock will be at the center point of that major electronics industry upgrade.

Chromium OS on Snapdragon 845

At Linaro Connect Vancouver 2018, some engineers are showing the Open Source Chromium OS running on the 10nm Qualcomm Snapdragon 845. With some talk on the status of using Freedreno for hardware accelerated GPU support in that Chromium OS demo. Over the past few months this solution has been upstreamed into the mainline kernel, display driver, audio driver, wifi driver, all the connectivity and periferal storage drivers, all to make Chromium OS work on that chipset. Running the 4.18 kernel with very few additional patches, it has hardware accelerated video playback using the open source freedreno driver. This could be a clue towards what I think could be an ultimate ARM Powered Laptop, a Snapdragon 845 Powered Chromebook would be so awesome, with Gigabit LTE, with good ARM single thread and multi-thread performance, with smooth Android and Linux apps supported, perhaps even it would be nice if Microsoft could contribute full x86 and ARM compiled Windows 10 apps support directly on this device.

Planet Computers launches the Cosmo Communicator for $549 for early backers at Indiegogo, powered by MediaTek P70 Octa-core quad ARM Cortex-A73, quad ARM Cortex-A53 with Mali-G72 MP3 GPU, on TSMC 12nm FinFET. It comes with WorldMode LTE dual-SIM (one is likely eSIM) support. Strong antenna with good signal, and now it also comes with a second 2″ touchscreen display, a toggle switch with fingerprint reader, a 24 megapixel high quality front facing camera with flash, and a backlit keyboard. The CPU is thus a performance upgrade over Gemini PDA, it also comes with 6GB RAM, 128GB Flash, MicroSD card slot, headphone jack, dual Type-C ports, dual speakers and microphones and a 4220mAh battery. Planet Computers shipped over 9500 Gemini PDAs to their backers over the past several months which I filmed here previously I have been using Gemini PDA as my main phone over the past 7 months and it has been an awesome experience. The backlight keyboard, fingerprint authentication, high quality back facing camera, improved phone calls support, better signal reception with a stronger processor, all these things are very welcome in their new flagship. Planet Computers intends to continue selling both Gemini PDA and Osmo Communicator as two in their range of devices available for 2019, with continued support and software updates coming on both. In this video they show a working Android 8.0.1 firmware on Gemini PDA and they are talking about Project Trebble, Android 9, new Sailfish releases to be supported, hopefully hardware accelerated improved Debian and other Linux distributions also to be supported throughout. Within less than a day, they have already reached more than 200% funding on crowdfunding here on Indiegogo with shipments scheduled for May 2019, as they optimize and develop everything, impressive working samples are going to be shown in the months to come.

The Huawei Mate 20 and Mate 20 Pro can take Bokeh video, they can blur the background as one of their new video AI modes in 1080p30. I shot here a sample using the phone so you can see the quality of that bokeh effect. Does it look good enough for video-blogging in a way that might have a professional look to it? I guess if the bokeh isn’t by optics it’s better not to shoot with it, right? But then the whole video is flat. This bokeh AI effect does not seem to recognize the things that are at the same distance, it blurs out anything that it considers not to be part of the face. And it might unblur any other faces that it catches in the background too which kind of defeats the purpose of blurring out the foreground and the background. It is possible though that Huawei might still yet improve on their AI algorithms here to perhaps improve their bokeh video effect further.

EU fines Google $5 Billion for illegal Android app-bundling contract policies

Margrethe Vestager, Member of the European Commission in charge of Competition, on Antitrust holds press conference with press Q&A announcing the fine on Google of €4.34 billion ($5 Billion) for illegal practices regarding Android mobile devices to strengthen dominance of Google’s search engine, Google’s exclusive app-bundling policies illegally blocking competition in the Android based hardware device space over the last decade but especially since 2011. Google forbids manufacturers to pre-install any competitor to Google Search, Chrome, Google Maps, Gmail, Google Docs and other of the core Google apps on any Android device if such manufacturer wants to pre-load any such Google app on any device. Google must fix this within 90 days or be fined further daily up to 5% of their daily global revenue.

I have been complaining about Google’s app bundling policies in Android over the past decade, I think those Google policies are anti-competitive but also counter-productive for Google itself. I think Google should support and encourage as much innovation around the Android OS as possible, they should let the manufacturers customize Android devices as they wish, Google should encourage their competitors such as Microsoft, Adobe, Apple, Yandex, Baidu, Alibaba, Amazon, Rakuten and many many other large tech companies should be invited to subsidize Android device by pre-loading whichever other search engines and apps that they would like to pre-load, and they should also be encouraged to adjust, customize, enhance and even to fork Android to add new functionalities to the Android operating system, for example support for other app platforms inside Android, for example support for Windows apps in Android, support for iOS apps in Android, support for Linux apps in Android and much more. I also believe that Google will make more money also when Google opens Android up much more and better, to allow device makers to work with Google’s competitors when it comes to apps that are pre-installed, and including also to develop Android fully in the open source space sharing dailies of all daily Android development.
