Gordon Kruberg, President, CEO and Founder of Gumstix Inc. In 2004, they launched the world’s first HDMI Stick Computer and they also invented the first SOM running Linux and computers were officially introduced with Gumstix first motherboard alongside the Waysmall computer, about the size of a stick of gum. Apple bought many of these to do their initial testing of iOS on ARM to try to have a smooth UI to work on ARM early. Gumstix now has an online tool called Geppetto that allows users to design their own PCB boards which can be used in combination with boards from TechNexion and Toradex, in 2013 it started a crowd-funding service to allow a group of users that want to get a custom design manufactured to share the costs to start manufacturing any new PCB idea. A new PCB idea can be made through Gumstix Gepetto for a $2000 setup manufacturing fee then payments for each board. They estimate that any project needing to design and manufacture custom PCB boards in quantities lower than 20 thousand pieces, that they are providing the most cost effective and fastest time to market.

The MHL Consortium has outdone itself with their latest technology mega specification, now perhaps setting the spec at a very future proof level (shall we say at least until 2020?), supporting up to 8K at 120fps, with up to 40W for power charge, delivering higher resolution, faster frame rates, support for the upcoming USB Type-C (dual side reversible) connector for up to 8K 60fps output from a phone (wow wow!). For the first time, MHL also introduces a new superMHL connector for 8K TVs (as in the first 8K TV from Samsung shown at CES). The SuperMHL spec is for mobile devices, set-top boxes (STBs), Blu-ray players, Audio/video recorders, HDMI sticks and other source devices to TVs and monitors, as SuperMHL should be included in most future FHD/4K/8K TVs, PC Monitors, MHL has shipped in over 750 Million devices thus far. George Grey, CEO of Linaro, the not-for-profit engineering organization consolidating and optimizing open source Linux software and tools for the ARM architecture, announces that Qualcomm, Mediatek, ZTE, AllWinner and Comcast are joining Linaro to work together on bringing Linux on ARM forward together. They are joining the existing Linaro member companies who are ARM, HiSilicon, Broadcom, Fujitsu, LG, Samsung, STMicroelectronics, Texas Instruments, AMD, AppliedMicro, Canonical, Cavium, Cisco, Citrix, Enea, Facebook, Freescale, HP, LSI, Marvell, Montavista, Nokia Solutions and Networks, Red Hat and IBM who all are contributing engineers to all be working together to improve Linux on ARM for Mobile, Enterprise (servers), Networking, and now also for Home (Set-top-box) usage with the Internet of Things potentially also to be supported. MHL for Productivity, Acer Extend, MediaTek MT6592 MHL Optimizations and Dell/Roku MHL HDMI Sticks

One of the most interesting aspects of MHL in my opinion is that MHL enables your Smartphone to run your PC/Desktop/Laptop experience. Now Acer is showing their Acer Extend prototype where it’s an “empty” good looking laptop shell as stylish as an Ultrabook, which only contains the display, battery, keyboard, mousepad and basic MHL support electronics, thus potentially being sold at a very cheap price, then you power that Laptop Dock with your Phone, in the similar way to the Motorola LapDock system of a couple of years ago. MediaTek is showing some Android software optimizations that they are doing to run this setup on their Octa Core MT6592 processor, thus switching the Android UI to a more Laptop-friendly orientation and configuration when the MHL connectivity to the Laptop Dock is triggered. Hopefully that Android 5 will feature optimized MHL functionality also, perhaps even enabling to instantly switch to a full Chrome OS like productivity state when the MHL to Laptop Dock is detected. MHL also demonstrates a couple of important HDMI sticks from Dell and from Roku which feature MHL support, making HDMI Sticks easy to use and clutter-free, automatically powered by the TV itself and running the full Productivity Suite or the Entertainment Functions directly on the HDMI Stick. Now with MHL 3.0, MHL supports up to 600mbit/s on the USB Host direction, something that I have been looking forward to since I started video-blogging about MHL in 2011. The potential here is to accelerate the adoption of ARM Devices for powering productivity.

I love computers and I am fascinated by them, and the idea that i can mount my own computer with my hands like lego and this has in the 90’s. Now we have mini pcs or hdmi tv dongles small computers that you can put in your pocket but they have some faults.
1-Internal wifi with bad performance, solution for this issue, external antennas that were implemented by the manufactures (see cozyswan s400 hdmi tv dongle and others)

2-A audio combo jack,is important for people that have lcd monitor’s that dont have speakers, they need the audio combo jack (see MK806 hdmi tv dongle)

3-A 2-pin connector for a fan and holes to fix the fan into the board, for heating problems.

4-change the usb 2.0 to usb 3.0 for better performance (see hardkernel odroid xu+E)

5-the storage issue, all hdmi dongles have nand flash that is welded and you cannot remove to upgrade, only by microsd card.

People nowadays use microsd cards to install linux and to boot from the card but a youtube user posted that booting from a microsd card is not very fast and the performance is not very spectacular.(30MBps)

So the best solution is using a Emmc card with a connector in the bottom-160 Mbps (see hardkernel)

so with paint and gimp i altered some pictures of hdmi tv dongles that i found in the internet to show you what I considered should be the perfect Hdmi tv dongle

In this first picture I added by paint some holes and a 2-pin fan connector to put a “future” fan like this (photo from a russian web site)

In the third picture, I removed by paint the NAND FLASH and I added a Emmc connector. And the combo audio connector because a lot of people that I know they dont have speakers in their lcd monitor.

In the market there is already a company (hardkernel) selling this emmc cards with connectors, but is very expensive if every company that does hdmi tv dongles adopt this standard i think that the price will come down, and everyone can altered their storage very easy.

I am writing this post to show people that they can present good ideas to change the statuos quo of the designs of the hdmi tv dongles or mini pc.

And manufactures could see what can they do to change for a better way the mini pc.

They claim to sell at 3.5 million units per year mainly in USA and Europe.

They demonstrate some Game Consoles, HDMI Sticks and Single Chip Game Consoles in this video.

The Game Consoles are with a 5 inch screen or with a 7 inch screen comes with built-in Key Mapping Software to help gaining more control on the hardware controller and to make gameplay available for non supported games for the controller and also comes out of the box with an app that emulates Nintendo 64 Games, PlayStation Games, Nintendo Ds and Gameboy Series Games.

I guess Google reads my Google+ feed.. on April 16th I suggested:

$50 Chrome stick would be nice. ARM Cortex-A15 on a HDMI stick running Chrome OS. I’m just saying.

Not sure if the $35 Chromecast Google HDMI Stick has an ARM Cortex-A15 processor in it though, what is the ARM Processor inside of the new Google Chromestick? Is Google using the Quad-core ARM Cortex-A9 Rockchip RK3188? Tegra4? Something from Qualcomm?

Which ARM Processor is being used? Can it run a full Chrome OS On ARM also? USB Host (to Ethernet/RF/Hub) supported?

Can the Chromecast Chromestick run a full Chrome OS included for free? Why didn’t Google explain how to “unlock” the Chromestick to display a full ARM Powered Chrome OS on the TV?

I look forward to Chrome OS on ARM Powered HDMI Sticks, let it not just revolutionize Video-on-demand, let the $35 Google stick also be the x86 Wintel desktop killer.

1. My guess is Chromecast has MHL support, can otherwise get charge from MicroUSB, I wonder if a MicroUSB hub can allow for Ethernet connectivity on Chromecast.

2. I wonder how video games and apps are going to run natively on the Chromecast.

3. Does it support Bluetooth 4.0, RF and USB Host for wireless keyboards and mice to use the Chromecast as a Chrome OS desktop without a remote device?

Rockchip shows H.265 and WebM VP9 video decoding on RK3188

Rockchip shows the world’s first H.265 and VP9 advanced video playback on their Rockchip RK3188 processor. Right now Rockchip is doing this software based decoding, with potential support for hardware based decoding coming later. This shows how the Rockchip RK3188 Quad-core ARM Cortex-A9 is fast enough to do such advanced software based video decoding. In the future, even Rockchip’s single-core and dual-core will support H.265 and VP9 codec, the goal is to have 1080p software based playback on RK3188 and 720p support on the Rockchip’s dual and single-core. The H.265 and VP9 support is added with a patch with no need to do a full firmware flash upgrade. The new H.265 HEVC and the WebM VP9 codecs can potentially save something like half the bitrate and file size at the same video quality.

Geniatech shows their new HDMI Stick with built-in 5Ghz dual-band WiFi support and provides a new compact DVB-T tuner on MicroUSB for Rockchip and AmLogic based tablets (comes with default driver on AmLogic tablets and for Rockchip requires modification to the tablet firmware). They have a DTV to WiFi battery powered box for $45 (guidance, I guess bulk price). Geniatech also shows some of their other current devices and they tease the next generation quad-core 2Ghz AmLogic ARM Cortex-A9 with Quad-core Mali-400 that is due to arrive in products around June/July.
