The bitrate of an 8K uncompressed stream can reach 48 Gb/s (59.94 Hz, 10 bits, 4:2:2), and interfaces consisting of 16 bundled 3G-SDI cables have been used for its transmission. However, increasing the cable count can sometimes complicate the wiring-up of production systems. The novel developed codec works at a compression rate of 1/4, and the resulting 8K code stream can be transmitted with a single 12G-SDI cable. Not only is TICO well known for its visually lossless video quality and very low latency, but is also characterized by a quality degradation that is almost independent of the number of successive encoding/decoding operations, which makes it suitable for production systems. The benefits of decreasing the cable count are exponential. We estimate that, when compared to systems of a comparable scale based on uncompressed 3G-SDIs, the use of the proposed codec will reduce the cable count to less than 1/5, and the number of cross-points in the matrix switcher to less than 1/200. Although in this study 12G-SDIs—which have become internationally available—have been adopted, 8K-TICO is fit to be used with IP interfaces, an option that may become mainstream when the problems of interoperability between different formats are overcome, or when unified standards emerge. In this paper, we will discuss the specifications and image quality of the developed codec, and present a plan for 8K-UHDTV production systems. We will also discuss the expected emergence of an adequate IP interface, a technology which has the potential to become mainstream in the future.

In the smart Automotive cabin, the information required for smart travel becomes part of the actual scene with the help of AR technology, the head-up display (HUD) can project useful information such as speed per hour and navigation onto the front windshield for the driver’s reference. In addition, BOE replaces the conventional in-car LCD with flexible display. The 12.3″ three-unit flexible display is backed by the OLED pixel compensation circuit technology developed by BOE, which can effectively improve the brightness uniformity of mid-sized OLED displays and provide better audiovisual experience for car users, BOE applies flexible AMOLED displays to transparent A-pillars, rearview mirrors to solve the problem of driver’s blind spots in automotive design. The flexible display can perfectly match the shape of the A-pillar and show data with delay shorter than one millisecond. With the help of camera, the images blocked by the A-pillar can be shown on the flexible display, thus eliminating blind spots in the field of view. By applying flexible display, the rearview mirror can also be customized according to the interior shape of the car. BOE’s smart cabin is equipped with a 6.39″ flexible display as a built-in rearview mirror, which makes it safer to drive the car even on rainy and snowy days, BOE also exhibited some innovative applications of in-car display, such as center console solution that supports gesture-based interaction and V-shaped mini-LED for cars. Nanosys uses AJA Video Systems’ HDR Analyzer tool that uses color science from Color Front to analyze the luminance and color chromaticity of every pixel in a piece of content real time. Looking at BT.2020 HDR10 content graded at 4,000 nits they are able to observe how the two different TV technologies respond.

Quantum Dots deliver the widest color gamut and highest peak luminance for a lifelike HDR content experience, they are also the fastest wide gamut technology. Nanosys shows a wide color gamut speed shootout comparing the response time of Quantum Dots to KSF phosphor, a competing wide color gamut technology. Quantum dots can be switched on and off in a matter of nanoseconds while KSF phosphor takes milliseconds to respond. While milliseconds sounds pretty fast, it isn’t fast enough for Full Array Local Dimming (FALD) displays when it comes to high frame rate content. Quantum Dots respond in perfect synch with the signal for clear motion and near-perfect black levels. In KSF displays, the red component needs time to warm up and cool down over several milliseconds. In the soccer ball example below this slow response time causes a cyan leading edge and a red trailing edge as the ball moves across LED zones on the display.

Michél also presents the set up of using LAPSCREEN on different macbooks, showing how one can connect up to 4 LAPSCREENS to just one macbook. There is also an HDMI input on every LAPSCREEN, to connect any HDMI source, any media player, notebook, WiFi/Miracast-dongle, even game consoles like the Nintendo Switch or the iPhone via a lightning to HDMI-cable are perfectly presented on the LAPSCREEN too.

LG 65” Crystal Sound OLED generates sound on the surface of the OLED display (as used in the Sony OLED TVs). LG has sticked two small ‘exciters’ at the back to turn the OLED panel into a speaker

LG shows a high resolution 4.3-inch 5K VR display with a density of 1,443ppi developed in collaboration with Google, it is a white OLED with color filters. The brightness is only 150 nits which would not be high enough for a smartphone display but is sufficient for Virtual Reality headsets.

For the automotive displays demos, LG uses the same LTPS technology commonly found in mobile phones to make car displays, a new car dashboard concept that includes displays in the center of the dash as well as one each for the driver and passenger. This trend is intended to replace all the mechanical display modules with interactive touchscreens. The passenger display, which was much larger than the one for the driver, provides access to multiple functions, like movies, messaging and other kinds of media.

LG Nanocell TV technology to compete with the Quantum Dot. They have small nanoparticle which are 1nm in size inside the color filters.

Hoffmann-La Roche Ltd, in Basel, Switzerland. The resulting patent CH532261 was licensed worldwide to electronics and watch industries and thus initiated a paradigm change towards flat panel field effect LCD.

In the early 1970s, Martin Schadt started to investigate correlations between liquid crystal molecular structures, material properties, electro-optical effects and display performance to obtain criteria for novel, effect-specific liquid crystal materials for TN- and subsequent field-effect applications. His interdisciplinary approach involving physics and chemistry became the basis for modern industrial Liquid Crystal LC-materials research and led to the discovery and production of numerous new functional molecules and new electro-optical effects. In 1970, shortly after the invention of the TN-effect, he developed the first commercial room temperature nematic liquid crystal mixture with positive dielectric anisotropy, used in the displays of the first Japanese digital TN-LCD watches. The pharmaceutical company Roche established itself as a major supplier of liquid crystal materials for the emerging LCD-industry.

Apart from his pioneering work on the TN-effect (i.e.e twisted nematic field effect), novel liquid crystal materials, organic semiconductors and biophysics, he invented or co-invented the following effects and technologies:

– first organic light-emitting diode (OLED) (1969 as post-doc at Canada’s NRC; US patent 3,621,321),
– Kerr effect in LCs (1972),
– field-induced guest-host color switching (1979),
– dual frequency addressing and materials (1982),
– optical mode interference (OMI)-effect (1987,)
– deformed helix ferroelectric (DHF)- and short pitch bi-stable ferroelectric (SBF)-effect (1989, 1990),
– linearly photo-polymerisation (LPP)-technology (1991).

As principal inventor and head of Roche LC research he promoted the development of LPP-Photo-alignment into manufacturing (1992–2002). As a key technology it enables contact free alignment and photo-patterning of monomeric and polymeric liquid crystals by optical means instead of mechanically. This has opened up novel display configurations as well as a wide range of new optical thin-film elements on single substrates, such as LC-interference color filters, optical retarders, cholesteric optical filters, wide-view films to enhance the field of view of LCDs, novel optical security elements for document and brand protection, stereo-polarizers as well as nano-and micro-corrugated optical polymer thin-film elements enabling polymeric antireflective and directional light scattering coatings.

The molecular design approach of Martin Schadt and his team has led to the discovery, patenting and production of the following commercially important liquid crystal classes: alkyl cyano Schiff’bases and esters (1971), phenyl-pyrimidines (1977), alkenyl liquid crystals which have become key for all state-of-the-art high-information content LCDs (1985–1995), numerous halogenated liquid crystals (1989–1995) as well as the first strongly non-linear optical (NLO)-ferroelectric liquid crystals (1992).

Until 1994 Martin Schadt was the head of the Liquid Crystal Research division of F. Hoffmann-La Roche Ltd. As a spin-off from Hoffmann-La Roche in 1994 he founded the interdisciplinary research and development company ROLIC Ltd. From 1994 until his retirement from the operating business in October 2002 Martin Schadt was CEO of ROLIC Ltd. and delegate of the board of directors. He retired from ROLIC in 2005 and is now active as a scientific advisor to various research groups and governmental agencies.

Martin Schadt has published 167 scientific papers, co-authored four books and holds 116 patents, and previously received the Roche Research and Development Prize and Karl Ferdinand Braun Prize of the American Society for Information Display (SID); highest recognition Award of SID.

The company has just managed to increase the resolution of their color screens from 106 DPI to 200 PPI due to a new color filter design.

Currently CLEARink is still experimenting and trying to finalize their product. The VP Marketing Sri Peruvemba says, “We have conducted a few different trials in the LCD mass production factory in Asia. They manufactured TFT arrays, helped us put together the display cells (front plane with our TIR film plus electrophoretic ink with black particles and backplane TFT layer), we built the modules, we have been testing them, tweaking some of the parameters and each trial is producing better output. I know this sounds a bit vague but we monitor lots of different parameters and have many permutations and combinations that are yielding acceptable results so we keep optimizing for the select few that we can deploy in Wearables and eSchoolbook applications.”

For the past 15 years as an entrepreneur, Mr. Tannas has been CEO of Tannas Electronic Displays, Inc., resizing liquid crystal displays for the aerospace and digital signage industries, wherein he holds 20 patents and 20 patents applications. He founder TED, Inc. based on the IP for resizing LCDs in 1999. He has published extensively and written several books and articles on electronic displays. As an educator he taught Displays at UCLA Extention for over 20 years. As an avocation, he has been an airplane owner and pilot with commercial rating, and is a former flight instructor. It is an optical sensor with a resolution of 500 dpi placed directly under an OLED display based on TFT circuitry that has been certified to meet the TEE standard. Other companies like Synaptics have shown similar concepts before, but this is the first time the under-display fingerprint sensor is made with TFT. Dr Guillaume Chansin who is a consultant in sensor technology at Irimitech gets a hands-on demo. He says there are advantages in using TFT instead of CMOS to make a large sensor that could potentially be the same size as the display in the future. According to BOE the sensor material is not silicon so it is cheaper to manufacture. They can make the sensor on glass or on flexible plastic (for matching with flexible OLED displays).

As personal viewing devices, head-mounted displays offer a unique means to rapidly deliver richer visual experiences than past direct-view displays occupying a shared environment. Viewing optics, display components, and sensing elements may all be tuned for a single user. It is the latter element that helps differentiate from the past, with individualized eye tracking playing an important role in unlocking higher resolutions, wider fields of view, and more comfortable visuals than past displays. This talk will explore the “reactive display” concept and how it may impact VR/AR devices in the coming years.

Douglas Lanman, Ph.D. is the director of computational imaging at Oculus Research, where he leads investigations into advanced display and imaging technologies. His prior research has focused on head-mounted displays, glasses-free 3D displays, light-field cameras, and active illumination for 3D reconstruction and interaction. He received a B.S. in applied physics with honors from Caltech in 2002 and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering from Brown University in 2006 and 2010, respectively. He was a senior research scientist at NVIDIA Research from 2012 to 2014, a postdoctoral associate at the MIT Media Lab from 2010 to 2012, and an assistant research staff member at MIT Lincoln Laboratory from 2002 to 2005.

Today, advancements in OLED have made it possible to construct flexible displays, ushering in an era of “Ubiquitous Screens.” As the rapidly developing Internet, IOT, 5G, cloud computing, etc., have already made the “Internet of Everything” become a reality, displays (especially flexible OLED displays) will play a significant role in this technological revolution.

Deqiang Zhang, Ph.D. is a graduate of Tsinghua University and held various management roles at Visionox before becoming the company’s CEO. His field of research is organic optoelectronics. Dr. Zhang has devoted himself to the research and development of OLED process technology, the construction of OLED mass production lines, and product planning in China for 22 years, promoting the industrialization of OLED. He has published over 20 OLED research papers and holds over 30 OLED patents. He received first place in China’s coveted “National Award for Technological Invention” in 2011.

The imager was demonstrated in a biometric palm print and multiple-finger detector. They believe the palm print is a more secure biometric than fingerprint scanning; and the processing of all building blocks in the palm print imager is compatible with existing FPD technology platform.

The significance of this technology pertains initially to indoor and outdoor signage because most signage is on PCB board, and not glass. IRTI projects that the industry will prefer PCB board because it can be produced at higher quantities and lower-costs than glass. They can also tie multiple modules together to create a modular display. Future applications include AR/VR and wearable.

This single optical element technology is designed to make augmented- and mixed-reality displays feasible in the near future by enabling comfortable viewing experiences in a simple design.

The I-Zone returned for the seventh year, showcasing live demonstrations of emerging best-in-class display and related technologies that will be integrated into next-generation products.
This year’s “Best Prototype” winner is Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, which developed a 250-pixel-per-inch (ppi) active-matrix field-sequential color-display panel based on electrically suppressed helix ferroelectric liquid crystal (FLC). FLC’s fast response time of 10 microseconds under low voltage of 6.67V/micron enables field sequential color display operation with a 60-Hz frame rate and 360-Hz FLC driving frequency.

Additional honoree awards were given to: Dimenco for its glasses-free 2D to 3D switchable displays, created by applying lenticular lenses on top of an LC display; Hong Kong Jade Bird Display for its active-matrix microLED display with 5,000 pixels per inch and over 1 million nits of brightness; PlayNitride, Inc. for utilizing its PixeLED display technology to build a transparent display with an innovative and unique process to transfer RGB microLEDs onto a pixel; and XTPL SA for its innovative materials process that can print electrodes several hundred times thinner than a human hair, with conductive lines as thin as 100nm.

The Swiss company Fluxim introduces Phelos, a benchtop R&D instrument that determines the position and orientation of emitters inside a working OLED stack or QD down-conversion film which are key optimization parameters. Phelos measures the electroluminescence spectrum in all emission and polarization angles. Furthermore, the instrument can be transformed into a photoluminescence spectrometer, unleashing the full advantage of angular luminescence analysis. An integrated optical model based on Fluxim’s simulation software Setfos with fitting algorithm provides a fast and accurate extraction of the emission zone and emitter molecule orientation. The new instrument Phelos complements Fluxim’s portfolio of R&D tools including the opto-electronic simulator Setfos, the electro-thermal simulator Laoss and the all-in-one instrument Paios, all designed to tackle challenges in the display and emerging PV industry. The screen is a combination of directional diffused light-control film (DLC) with a micro-structured optical film. The screen directs the environment-scattered light to a direction that is different from that of the screen viewer. One is a directive screen using an array of CCR with diverted and curved surfaces (D-CCR), which reflects and scatters the light toward a certain angle: the viewer’s face. The screen has a gain of 16 and reflects extremely bright images even with small and low-power projections.

A key point in their technology is the improvement of the aperture of display pixels, which for typical electrowetting displays is approximately 70 percent. SCNU displays include apertures of 85 percent, and if these cells are used in stacked cyan, magenta and yellow cells, the displayed colors are markedly more bright and saturated than in 70 percent aperture cells. As part of this key development, the contrast ratio must be maintained or increased, which is achieved by minimizing the stray light transmitted. Contrast ratios up to 20:1 can be shown.

During Display Week 2018, PlayNitride demonstrated two microLED prototypes. One is a small 0.89″ 64×64 (105 PPI) panel with a brightness of 800 nits. All of the LED chips in this display were transferred in three shots (one shot per color). The pixel size in this display is 0.243 mm.

The second display is a larger panel – 3.12″ 256×256 (116 PPI). Due to the larger number of LEDs (total of 786K LEDs) PlayNitride had to use 24 shots to transfer all three colored chips. The pixel size in this larger display is 0.219 mm.

At the I-Zone, they demonstrated their high-efficiency green for LCD applications that replaces the current LCD white with quantum dots using a special film, which ensures a wider color gamete. What makes their technology unique is its 15-nanometer emission for quantum dots. According to Quantum Solutions, current market efficiency is high but the emission width is broad at 30-40 nanometers. Quantum Solutions’ product is much narrower at 15 nanometers, which provides a wider color gamete that can produce an exact green to mix with other RGB colors to create more vibrant and accurate color combinations.

Jeff walks me through the company’s technology roadmap to explain how Quantum Dots can be used in displays of all types from LCDs to OLEDs to microLEDs and even emissive Quantum Dot displays of the future.

Quantum dots are tiny man-made crystals. They are so small that you can’t see them with a typical microscope. In fact, they’re 10,000 times narrower than a human hair. Quantum dots are actually very powerful devices and it’s their size that gives them a unique ability: to convert light into nearly any color in the visible spectrum with very high efficiency.

Each quantum dot is actually a tiny semiconductor — which means it can convert incoming energy. The electronic characteristics of quantum dots are determined by their size and shape. This means they can control the color of light given off by a quantum dot just by changing its size. Bigger dots emit longer wavelengths like red, while smaller dots emit shorter wavelengths like green. Think of a guitar string. When a guitar string is shortened, it produces a higher pitch and when it is lengthened, it creates a lower pitch. The tune of a quantum dot – the wavelength of the light it emits – behaves in a similar way.

Today, Quantum Dot displays are built just like LED displays. The quantum dots are added to the backlight of the display in the form of a translucent plastic film that’s loaded with dots. Each TV contains literally trillions of Quantum Dots. In this mode, the Quantum Dots are improving existing LED displays by enabling them to be more power efficient and deliver better color.

The film itself is made using a roll-to-roll coating process. Nanosys manufactures Quantum Dots in Silicon Valley, California and partners with companies like Hitachi Chemical to create Quantum Dot films used by display makers.

Unlike OLED materials, Quantum Dots are inorganic. This means they’re really stable and can be handled more easily in manufacturing. That makes for a tougher, longer lasting display that doesn’t exhibit burn-in issues.

According to Nanosys, Quantum Dot technology is not limited to LCDs. It can improve displays of all types from LCDs to OLEDs to microLEDs to pure, emissive QDEL displays.

Nanosys shared a detailed roadmap video at SID that breaks down the display design for each of these new implementations for their future of the Quantum Dot.

Prior to DSCC, Ross was SVP of Displays, LEDs, Lighting and PV at IMS Research after the firm acquired his market research business Young Market Research (YMR). Prior to YMR, Ross was VP of New Market Creation at Samsung LCD where he reported to the CEO.

From 1996 – 2008, Young started, ran and sold DisplaySearch, the leading source of market intelligence, events and consulting to the flat panel display supply chain. At DisplaySearch, Young launched most of the categories for the company including FPD equipment, FPD materials, TFT LCD shipments and technology, notebook PCs, desktop monitors, TVs, sell-through and more. Ross pioneered coverage in each layer of the display supply chain and was the only analyst to cover the entire display supply chain at DisplaySearch. He also launched their US events business, which included the broadcasting of their HDTV Conference on HDNet. In addition, he led DisplaySearch’s global consulting business. With less than $500 in capital, he grew the company to over $10M in revenues during his tenure. Young sold DisplaySearch to The NPD Group in 2005 matching DisplaySearch’s sell-in business with NPD’s sell through and consumer data providing new insights to customers. While at NPD, Young received their prestigious John Byington Award for outstanding creativity and innovation. Young also received a Presidential Citation Award from the Society for Information Display (SID) in 2012 “for his sustained service in promoting the Market Focus Conference Series from concept to successful completion”.

​Prior to DisplaySearch, Young served in senior marketing positions at OWL Displays, Brooks Automation, Fusion Semiconductor and GCA in the driver IC, flat panel automation, etch and strip and lithography markets. In his first job at GCA, Young was named to the VLSI Research Executive All Star team in his attempts to help save the company, which had received extensive support from SEMATECH. Ross graduated from the University of California at San Diego with a degree in Economics and completed their Graduate School of International Relations and Pacific Studies where he conducted extensive research on the relationships between semiconductor manufacturers and semiconductor equipment suppliers which led to the publication of his book – Silicon Sumo: US-Japan Competition and Industrial Policy in the Semincoductor Equipment Industry published by the University of Texas.

In this video they are showing their in-cell pixelize technology in a 16,7″ automotive display with no eternal touch panel, local dimming back light, high contrast, curved conformed styles, 4x 12.3″ bonded curved displays from pillar to pillar in the car, JDI has the top share of the automotive display market. JDI shows their industrial line of display products with long life support of 7, 10, 12 years of support, mostly built very rugged in their design, some outdoor viewable, zero bright dot deffect, touch screens, 6.4″ XGA 1024×768 suitable for avionics, 7″ 1280×720 700nits suitable for example for broadcast applications, 13.3″ 4K with a small bezel in an industrial package. JDI also shows some of their future tech demos such as a 80% transparent display without a color filter or polarizer using sequential RGD LED lighting, 17.3″ light field holographic 8K display allowing for an amazing holographic like effect for specially created holographic stills and even video where it appears that you are moving around the person in the video with wider viewing angles than other Light Field displays shown previously. JDI shows their 17,3″ 8K display used for 8K broadcasting, they also have a new version of this 17.3″ 8K display with BT2020 enhanced color support using red, green and blue lasers for backlighting. JDI does 11.45″ E Ink shelf labels with some bright saturated red or yellow available. Ultra narrow bezel IPS-Nano LTPS LCD displays with wide viewing angles where the color uniformity is the same at any viewing angle for the medical market. JDI is the largest color LTPS LCD smartphone display provider. LTPS allows for the high pixel density. Full Active bezel-less LCD display like the 5.99″ 18:9 with narrow borders on all 4 sides used in the Xiaomi Mi Mix 2. Full active LCD with straight corners as used in the HTC U11+. JDI shows 15Hz to 60Hz variable refresh rate showing that even running UI animations at 15Hz there wouldn’t be any image degradation which could save significant amount of power. JDI also works on Flexible OLED.

Shunpei Yamazaki holds the Guinness World Record for the most patents credited as inventor, at 11,353 as of 30 June 2016. At present, he is the president of Semiconductor Energy Laboratory (SEL) and is energetically doing R&D on many different advanced technologies with his team. His present R&D theme is the crystalline Indium-gallium-zinc (IGZO) oxide semiconductor, namely, C-axis aligned crystalline (CAAC)-IGZO. Displays using CAAC-IGZO are already being manufactured by companies such as Sharp. You can see my videos of Sharp IGZO displays here. CAAC-IGZO can be used not only in displays but also is CPUs and memories. If silicon LSI is replaced with IGZO LSI, the power consumption for processors may become less than 1%. Silicon used mainly at present will be replaced with CAAC-IGZO in the near future. In the coming AI age, it is indispensable to develop IGZO LSI. Dr. Yamazaki and the researchers of SEL are concentrating on R&D of IGZO LSI.

The foldable all-screen WQHD AMOLED display launched by BOE can achieve minimum dynamic bending with a radius of only 1mm. It can be bent more than 100,000 times and has an NTSC color gamut up to 118%. BOE is exhibiting a 5.99″ FHD+ 2160×1080 Flexible AMOLED foldable mobile phone and a 7.56″ foldable tablet. The display can be used for mobile phones when it is folded up and for tablets or monitors when it unfolds.

As one of the upcoming possibly revolutionizing OLED technical directions, BOE demonstrates their OLED printing technology to possibly just print the future of Smartphone displays showing their 5.5″ FHD (1920×1080) printing flexible OLED display.

UHD has become a keyword of SID 2018 for material and equipment suppliers and device manufacturers, signaling the advent of the 8K era. In addition to the 110-inch 8K, 75-inch 8K, and 65-inch 8K glasses-free 3D displays, BOE also presents 13.3-inch 8K display products, promoting the development of small and medium-sized 8K products.

BOE has gathered speed in building an 8K ecosystem ever since it launched the “8425 strategy” which means “promoting 8K, popularizing 4K, replacing 2K and making good use of 5G”. BOE has recently launched the 8K solution that incorporates BOE’s 4K/8K image service cloud, 8K decoder player, and 8K display device, making it possible to shoot, edit, transmit and broadcast 8K content. This helps to solve problems like the costliness and massive size of traditional decoder players, as well as the lack of 8K content, thus promoting the faster popularization of 8K.

Among several micro displays at BOE’s booth is a silicon-based OLED AR product which features monocrystalline silicon as the active drive backplane as well as high resolution, high level of integration, low power consumption, small size, and light weight. The AR product is backed by a 0.39-inch silicon-based OLED which has the world’s leading pixel density of 5644PPI, 17 times that of a Retina display, and a contrast ratio over 10000:1, which enables the overlapping and interaction between virtual 3D images and real scenes.
