Linaro Android AOSP TV, making Android TV Boxes and Smart TVs better

Interview with the core team behind the Linaro’s AOSP TV project. The project lead Khasim Syed Mohammed and team members Show Liu and Vincent Chou demonstrate Android TV running on the 96Boards HiKey platform. The team shares the goals of the AOSP TV project, how it will benefit the SoC vendors, OEMs and ODMs of Smart TVs and Advanced Set-top box manufacturers and Android TV application developers. They clarify the project goal, its to create AOSP TV as the open source subset of Android TV and is not to fork the Android TV work from Google. They also share the details on upcoming LHG’s AOSP TV m-lcr release, OPTEE security framework integration, DRM support to be added and a lot more.

JmGO shows their latest short-throw 4000lumen DLP Laser projector, projecting on a 100″ screen, it can also project to 120″ in FHD. It has a built-in Mstar6A828 Quad-core ARM Cortex-A53 with Quad-core Mali450 GPU running JmGO’s custom UI on Android 5. The projector offers an extremely large and bright image projected at a very short distance, with 50000″1 contract ratio, supporting a clear image size up to 300 inches, the system supports many codecs decoded at up to 4K, Ethernet, Miracast, Airplay, DLNA and more. The price is about $3755.

JmGO X1 is JmGO’s new 1080p projector with auto-focus, using a smart camera system or sensor it automatically can focus regardless the distance it is at from the wall, at 950Lumen, it costs about $751 in China. Also running the Mstar6A828 Quad-core ARM Cortex-A53 with Mali450 GPU, also comes with an amazingly awesome remote control with a clickable scroll wheel well placed for thumb usage.

Egreat Realtek RTD1195 and Rockchip Media Players, RK3188 Game Console

Egreat STBs based on Realtek RTD1195 dual core Cortex A9 SoC with 4K, H.265 video decoding support. The video also features older Realtek and Rockchip Android TV Boxes, and an RK3188 based game console (Egreat K3).

Egreat will launch their A-series media players soon: A3 and A9 models. I contacted the company for some more details, but since the product is still in development, there are not willing to disclose complete details at this stage.

Here are the specs I could gather for Egreat A9:

SoC — Realtek RTD1195 dual core ARM Cortex A9 processor
System Memory — N/A
Storage — N/A. Possibly a SATA bay is also present (Unclear)
Video Output / Input — Composite, Component and HDMI output (MHL).
HDMI input Audio — HDMI, Stereo output (RCA), and S/PDIF
Video Playback — 3D blu-ray video playback + full video format support. H.265 decode support.
Audio Playback — 7.1 raw audio output “framepacking”.
Connectivity — Ethernet, WiFi with dual high-gain external antennas, and Bluetooth (TBC).
USB — 1x USB 3.0, 1x USB 2.0
Egreat A-series media player will run Android 4.4 Kitkat.Even though specs are incomplete at this stage, RTD1195 based products should be able to transfer data quickly and play high bitrate 4K videos smoothly thanks to high performance interfaces such as Gigabit Ethernet, USB 3.0 and SATA. CPU and GPU performance will however be greatly inferior to the new application processors from Amlogic S802, Rockchip RK3288, or AllWinner A80.

TCL shows 55″ 4K for $1600, Kids TVs, set-up-boxes and more

TCL Corporation is one of the biggest TV companies in the world. They are showing their latest products at the Shenzhen Electronics Fair including 4K TVs, smartphones, set-up-boxes and more. They are showing their Alcatel Onetouch branded phones series TCL Idol, TCL Pop and TCL Hero. A 55inch 4K TV from TCL is sold for about 10,000RMB(~$1,600) One of the phones of Hero series has an octa-core CPU and costs 1,016RMB(~$165). They are showing a set-up-box with RK3066 CPU with a Metro-style interface and 28inch Smart TVs for kids. These kids TVs have a kids design and a protective film over the display in order to protect their eyes. Some washing machines with a different design than others and Smart TVs with Mstar hexa-core CPU are some other products from TCL.

Here are the cheapest yet 4K displays for sale all over China, now being exported worldwide either under the Konka brand or under third party brands. They sell about 30K 4K displays per month at the moment and mass production of these are ramping up. Those all support HDMI 2 60fps by default. Konka uses the LG and Samsung 4K panels, so the quality is the same in terms of the panel, the CPU and 4K engine is different generating and upscaling perhaps different 4K quality yet, they use for example MStar 4K engine with among other things 4K HEVC decode support.
