Holst Centre R&D institute printed and flexible electronics for automotive https://armdevices.net/2019/12/02/holst-centre-rd-institute-printed-and-flexible-electronics-for-automotive/ https://armdevices.net/2019/12/02/holst-centre-rd-institute-printed-and-flexible-electronics-for-automotive/#respond Mon, 02 Dec 2019 08:24:08 +0000 http://138.2.152.197/?p=136545 Holst Centre is a R&D institute from the Netherlands focusing on printed and flexible electronics For this years IDTechEx we decided to focus on our activities for automotive. Next to integrating electronics in polycarbonate substrates (in mold structural electronics), we are also integrating electronics into glass First the circuits are printed on PET or PVB, then components are placed such as LED’s or chips before laminating the printed electronics into glass The challenge is processing on substrates with very low glass-transition temperature and lamination of relatively thick components without any distortions. The demonstrator we show here uses a transparent capacitive touch button to switch on the LED’s. This enables functional glass which can be used as user interface in public transport, in architectural applications and road user communication for cars Starting with printing electronics in 2D, we now also print in 3D. The machine we have partially developed in-house uses the principle of stereolithography, where a curable photopolymer is hardened layer-by-layer by applying UV light. Using modular illumination, the system can rapidly print large designs. Within the system we are able to place components such as near field chips and dispense lines. This enables small series production: from digital design and raw materials to a 3D electronics structure. The main benefits are being able to optimize the volume dimensions and the fact that the result is rugged. We work with this technology for applications in chip packaging, automotive and defense but we are also looking for other applications Large arrays of elastomer based pressure sensors on flexible substrates such as TPU enables unobtrusive monitoring of posture when laminated into chairs, beds, wheelchairs etc. These pressure sensors consist of a piezo resistive material with a suspended conductive membrane. When pressure is applied, a resistance is measured. The printing technology enables low cost sensing capability over a large area. The example demonstrated is a large pressure sensitive mat, but we also offer fully printed piezo-electric sensors to measure motion and temperature sensors. By integrating many different sensing modalities and measuring at many locations, a lot of data is available to optimize the signal for a specific application, such as a driver drowsiness monitor. Next to these examples Holst Centre works on flexible displays, smart clothing and many other exciting applications of printed electronics. We are happy to see at this IDTechEx event that Faurecia announces volume production of so called plastronics. For the success of the printed electronics industry it is important that all parties in the value chain collaborate to bring even more products to market using printed electronics technology. As Holst we are always looking for new partners to take on this challenge together.

Conventional adaptive driving beam headlamps are limited in achieving still higher quantities of switchable pixels by the number of LEDs and movable elements needed. In this paper, it is shown that by integrating an active matrix liquid crystal display module, it is possible to realize fully adaptive high-resolution headlights without mechanical elements and a finite number of LED with 30 k switchable pixels.

As adaptive driving beam headlamps (ADBs) are now established and already available in mass-production vehicles, the market is requesting headlight systems with increasing resolution.

State of the art are LED matrix modules such as the HD84 from Hella KGaA Hueck & Co. that realize low beam, ADB, and additional functionalities by using 84 switchable LEDs. But the number of pixels that can be realized using this approach is limited by the number of LEDs that can be integrated in the tight installation space of a headlamp.

Higher resolution is needed to be able to implement new lighting functions to further improve traffic safety when driving at night or dusk. To realize a significant increase in traffic safety, the ADB must be able to simultaneously fade out several drivers of traffic oncoming of the vehicle to avoid glaring and to highlight important areas like road markings and traffic signs. To accomplish this, the headlamp must be able to divide the illuminated area in front of the vehicle into a grid of small areas with individually controlled light intensity. The higher the resolution of the grid, the better are the realizable lighting functions.

Filmed at the I-Zone startups and New Tech Demos area at the SID Display Week.

TwinTorq Electric-Hydraulic Engine extends range by 45% for EV Buses https://armdevices.net/2016/11/22/twintorq-electric-hydraulic-engine-extends-range-by-45-for-ev-buses/ https://armdevices.net/2016/11/22/twintorq-electric-hydraulic-engine-extends-range-by-45-for-ev-buses/#respond Tue, 22 Nov 2016 02:36:40 +0000 http://138.2.152.197/?p=134554 KersTech develops and manufactures their TwinTorq motor providing they claim a major leap in energy efficiency over conventional electric motors, significantly increasing driving range and runtime. The TwinTorq motor combines an electric motor with a hydraulic motor in a single compact unit, with the hydraulic motor providing high efficiency starting torque at slower speeds and the electric motor high efficiency running torque at higher speeds. Both the electric and hydraulic systems regenerate energy during deceleration to replenish the battery and hydraulic accumulator in their respective speed ranges. The hydraulic motor can be disengaged during electric mode. Controller software manages the electric and hydraulic systems to optimize energy usage. The net effect is that the hydraulic power at low speed/high torque reduces battery demand to preserve electric energy and increase battery range by up to 45%, or enables the use of smaller batteries. And because they use hydraulics for launch acceleration and energy regeneration, minimizing high battery charges and discharges, they are kinder to batteries so they last longer. The TwinTorq motor uses simple physics and proven, reliable technologies in a novel fashion. Because hydraulic motors are 3 times more efficient than electric motors for acceleration and brake energy regeneration at lower speeds, during deceleration they recover energy hydraulically, as pressure in an accumulator. Then they release the pressure to accelerate the vehicle without using the electric motor and battery. There’s the big energy saving, because high-torque acceleration chews up battery energy. By replacing low efficiency electric energy with high efficiency hydraulic energy during launch and low speed acceleration the TwinTorq motor preserves battery energy to increase driving range and runtime by up to 45%. TwinTorq’s unique design integrates shared electric and hydraulic components, reducing component and production costs. The motor’s coaxial and coplanar architecture in combination with their patented 90° gear drive enables axial compactness or “flatness”, allowing low-in- the-chassis mounting to improve space utilization and lower center of gravity. TwinTorq is an ideal solution for commercial electric vehicles with frequent-start- stop drive cycles where range and battery life directly impacts productivity and operating cost. Their first application is electric forklifts, because 65% of new forklifts are already electric, and then we’ll address city and shuttle buses; garbage, freight and parcel trucks; and other heavy electric vehicles. This video was filmed at the IDTechEx USA 2016 in Santa Clara, California.

Nuon Solar Team currently employs nine students from Delft University of Technology. Much of its innovation is constrained by the rules of the solar race such as being limited to 3sq. meters of GaAs or 6 sq. meters of single crystal silicon PV. Nonethelesss, innovative suspension has been developed of unusually small size to fit the aerodynamic shell. In past years they have tried concentrators and GaAs. Regenerative braking is the only viable regenerative harvesting within the rules. They have remarkably efficient traction motors at 96%. Power electronics is secret but they are aware of the potential of the new SiC and GaN power components not least in lightweighting and improving efficiency. They are interested in the Sabic lighter-weight polycarbonate cowl glazing. They do not yet have structural electronics beyond the PV forming the outer surface. The vehicles are entirely carbon fiber except the aluminium suspension. The racer is currently a mere 150 kg.

The main frame of the vehicle is riveted just like in the case of airplanes to make it more durable and lightweight. The independent suspension uses an adaptive suspension system to adjust to the shape of the terrain at any given moment. Regardless of the surface type, terrain, angle of inclination of roads and travel, the EV4’s wheels uniformly and evenly touch the ground. Thanks to the electric drive as well as gear belts the noise emission is close to zero, which has a positive effect on the driving comfort. The vehicle’s low weight and the use of modern and efficient lithium ion batteries achieve a 100km driving range. Shocks are absorbed by two bicycle shock absorbers with adjustable hardness and damping. Hydraulic disc brakes on 4 wheels allow for very short braking distances, making the EV4 very safe. The EV4’s four wheels result in stability superior to that of single-track vehicles.

They operate at a maximum speed of 300MHz and feature up to 2048KB of Flash, dual 16KB of cache memory and up to 384KB of SRAM. They can achieve 1500 CoreMarks or up to 645 DMIPS. On the memory side, they have a flexible SRAM which can be configured as Tightly Coupled Memory (TCM) up to 256KB. Allowing execution of deterministic code or fast processing data. Code executed from TCM is executed at full speed so at 300MHz. The SRAM is multi-port which is reducing the latency over the bus matrix. When they have a lot of burst the latency can be reduced by 16 thanks to the 4 ports. To accelerate the execution of the code from on-chip Flash or nonvolatile memory connected to QuadSPI or over the External Bus Interface, they have integrated a huge L1 cache of 16kByte for the instruction and 16kByte for the data. Both with ECC. The 384KByte of SRAM can be extended through the SDRAM interface. Looking at the features now, they have plenty of serial communications such as SPI, SDIO or USART. Atmel has one High-speed USB Host and Device, with integrated PHY which obviously save some cost and PCB space. There is one CMOS Camera interface for image acquisition. All the series offer two Advanced Analog Frontend (AFE) with Dual Sample and hold capability and Up to 16-bit resolution with hardware oversampling. They also have programmable Gain for small signal input. All series offer real-time event management through direct connection between PWM, Timer and ADC for motor control application. Both series are based on the same feature set, the only difference is coming from the Ethernet, CAN support (SAME70 integrates Ethernet and CAN). Atmel offers all series in BGA and QFP from 64 to 144 pins. Small 64-pin pincount option offers an entry level form factor high performance MCU. All series support the extended Industrial temperature range from -40 to 105°C.
