Just got my first Android TV set-top-box. It is a Cortex A53 based unit (AMLOGIC S905X). It runs Android 6.0.1 and KODI 16.1. These types of units are kind of slow because Cortex A53’s just aren’t cutting it. Complex UI’s, and a full Linux OS, and Android just requires more CPU IPC’s than these units provide. I must admit I haven’t looked into optimizations, but I’m looking forward to Cortex A72 media soc’s to help with performance. But seeing as how the best STB soc is the AMLOGIC S912X, which is the same A53 ARM core, was just released a few months ago, that doesn’t seem likely. But at least that means when a newer ARM core media SOC is made available that it won’t take long for new units to come out.
