The only reason that Mediatek uses less power is because of the AWESOME work IMG has done with their series 6 GPU’s. Combine PowerVR with MIPS and that combo will truly be something to be reckoned with. PowerVR series6 GPU’s look to be the best in performance per watt if they can make a power hogging ARM cortex A-15 use less than similar SoC’s even when Mediatek’s ARM A-15 SoC is clocked higher.

But because of that have to compete with competitors like Qualcomm and Samsung (which still are dominating the SoC market for smartphones) will they focus first on the tablet pc market where it is a bit not so hard competition of few SoC developers as on the smartphonemarket.
MediaTek acquisition of the small swedish company Coresonic during spring 2012,
with their baseband dsp IP solution is now of course implemented in their MT8135.
