No, even a cheapie Richland chip has a far faster IGP than regular Iris which is much more expensive.

If Apple’s Swift is so much more power efficient why doesn’t the battery in the iPhone last significantly longer. Swift is basically an Apple copy of Krait, i.e. a widened A-9 design and has almost nothing in common with the A-15.

As for MIPS they delivered in the past but their execution could of used a lot of work. But with IMG that problem has been fixed so nothing will stop MIPS from being a player in the mobile sector.

Apple’s ARM cores are only gently modified Cortex A-9’s, they perform only a little bit better and consume only a little less power.

I’m not too sure about MIPS, that’s my point, all we’ve got from IMG so far is just words, for me to form an opinion about their forthcoming chips I need to see some real products.

Imagination is just very worried seeing ARM Mali graphics dominate large chunks of the ARM GPU market so fast, making Imagination potentially irrelevant. Just go use your MIPS phone and MIPS Chromebook if you think those are so much better. Apple do not design their own GPU cores though, they just take other peoples licensed designs.

MIPS got squeezed by PowerPC designs at the performance end of things and ARM squeezed them out of low-power designs. MIPS just had a few middle-of-the-road designs that nobody wanted, and they were too late to jump on the low-power bandwagon.

ARM do need some more competition from intel to keep them on their toes. MIPS just died a slow and painful death and were not up to the job of giving ARM competition for many years now.

It won’t fix the power hogging problem that the vanilla A-15’s have so its worthless. Sure it will perform better but its battery life is GOING TO SUCK EGGS!!!!!

The A-7 clocks higher, that’s what makes it faster/stronger. It’s also available in multi-core configurations.
ARM is not “chasing” tablets, it already powers the vast majority of them.

Actually, they rushed their last version and it had flaws, hopefully this version will have corrected those problems. If it does fix the problems it will perform much better and use less power.

The new ARM cortex-A7 is much more powerful than the A-8 and it uses a lot less power. The A-15 designs do use more power, yea, but they are an order of magnitude more powerful than the old A-8’s.

Don’t be so sure about that. ARM’s power usage ever since ARM cortex-A8 came out has been skyrocketing thought the roof. ARM11 marks the last mainstream chip that ARM focused on low power usage on. Now ARM is trying to one up Intel and every advantage that ARM had IS GONE!!!!! ARM is going nowhere in the desktop market.

But it is now to many ARM-developers so MIPS will have very difficult to crush ARM into a lot of pieces (as you predicts!).
