Does it have pulse width modulation (PWM) or direct current?
This may require a special testing environment, but maybe the “pencil test” at low light settings is enough to get visible results.

If possible you should tell Onyx not to use PWM so it is an eye-friendly light without flicker.
They can advertise their front light as flicker-free and get even more customers.

If they do a web search, they will find forum threads with people who suffer from LED PWM.

What SoC is the e-reader based on? Does the e-reader or phone have bluetooth so you can connect a keyboard? I’m wondering how responsive it would be for typing text for emails. Also what is typing an sms like on the phone?
