Nope IGP’s (intel and AMD) are actually quite efficient Even a low end card like the HD750 uses about 45W, but a more mid-range card like a HD7770 uses more like 75W:

http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/ASUS/HD_7750/24.html

I don’t know how you can say they use “too much power”? What are you basing that naive statement on??? Do you have any idea of the number of calculations they have to make? They use power much more efficiently than any CPU.

No they actually don’t. Intel Iris and AMD richland’s IGP’s uses a lot of power. A mainstream GPU would use 30-55 watts while AMD’s IGP uses about 20-30 watts on the desktop. They both use too much power.

]]>

These days, if an IGP isn’t being used then they tend to take almost no power, so there’s no reason to get a server chip to save on the power than an inactive IGP would use.
Sure, a mid-range GPU will be a lot faster than any IGP, and relatively speaking, even though they use more power, they give a much better gaming experience.

How can you justify saying that AMD APUs are power hogs, did I not show you that AMDs 19W Trinity used less power than an Intel 17W system, while giving a similar experience.

]]>

AH yes but you don’t know the whole story. IGP’s still use power and thus a low power mid-range GPU from AMD or Nvidia would be a far better solution than the IGP and it would use the same amount of power because AMD’s APU’s are POWER HOGS!!!!

True, yes, the new Richland chips top out at $150 (Trinity topped out at $130), for similar money you can get an i3-3225 which the Richland chips wipes the floor with in games:

http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/cpu/display/amd-a10-6800k_6.html#sect0

Haswell chips in that price range have not made an appearance yet, but the Richland also beats the much more expensive Haswell i7-4770K by a nice margin.

I thought you were all about low-power and small computers and using a weaker dual-core CPU just to shave off a few Watts……… now you’re considering a discreet GPU, even a mid-range one is going to add lots to your power bill, I don’t think you have your story straight.

Nope try almost $150 dollars for that price I can get an low end Intel CPU with just as good performance and get an AMD or Nvidia Discrete GPU. The Intel CPU will be dual core but for most games that’s just fine for the low end.

I just looked at AMD’s APU’s and they are expensive I wanted to build a new computer for $400 but AMD is too expensive for that.

Jebus, FirefoxOS doesn’t have many games because it is a new OS. It will probably have more games on release than Android did when it was first released.
Sounds like you would fancy the new Ubuntu phone OS, although why you need to hit the hardware on a phone escapes me.

Firefox is more accurately a Linux based OS with a browser interface and API.

Android came out with no apps and it didn’t fade away.

That is true for the most part expect for consoles. FirefoxOS sucks its a browser based OS and those are no good. It wouldn’t but it needs apps otherwise it will just fade away.

Again, FirefoxOS has not been released yet, why would it have a full suite of applications, all new OS’s start at zero.

Games haven’t had direct hardware access since the 90’s, all games are programed through API’s, it’s just a matter of having an efficient API.

FirefoxOS can’t suck because it hasn’t been released.

ChromeOS can suck however.

Also, you seem to be under the impression that ChromeOS and FirefoxOS are similar, they’re not, not really. FirefoxOS will allow you to have proper local applications, unlike ChromeOS. Sure you can’t access the hardware directly, but as Android and iPhoneOS have shown, that’s not important on a phone.

You maybe right about M$ but they are tanking fast and at this rate AMD will be joining them. M$ is at the point of no return AMD is almost there. One more slip up and AMD is there. AMD has done a good job reducing power consumption they still have a long way to go. Also Haswell has a 45% IPC lead over AMD’s jaguar. Intel haswell NUC looks pretty good right about now and Intel is much faster. ARM Cortex A-15 is NOTHING short of an energy hog for mobile chips. Imagination not only makes the most efficient GPU’s on the market they also make the fastest and the best selling. AMD trying ARM in the mainstream even with tablets would be the end of them FOR SURE!!!!

Realistically, MS isn’t going to die anytime soon. The company is still making increasing amounts of profits every year and can afford to ride out whether their present range of products will be successful or not and that’s still up in the air and not a foregone conclusion yet!

Btw, you and Charbax at least have your hatred of MS in common ;-p

You are right about Imagination dominating the mobile GPU market, I replied to Charbax with two links that confirm it!

I also agree that MIPS is more energy efficient but it’s a harder sell, with ARM dominating the market and software compatibility being a issue.

While I disagree AMD is finished, but they’re definitely near the point of no return and really need to improve by next year or they really will be finished…

I don’t think adopting ARM will help them much besides being a me too company, but coupling their GPU’s with ARM may provide a better solution than Nvidia at least but that remains to be seen… but I wouldn’t rule it out because Nvidia has taken a really long time to adapt to the mobile market with their Tegra and they’re still about two generations away from a proper mobile version of their GPU technology that doesn’t compromise on features and functions… While AMD has a done a pretty good job of reducing power consumption of their iGPUs, as that’s where most of the power savings are coming from on their latest APUs.

Problem for AMD is they need HSA to become a industry standard… Otherwise it can wind up like Nvidia CUDA and never really get used for much at all.

Meanwhile, there are other standards competing for industry standardization that serves the same purpose and some of them already have more acceptance than AMD’s solution…

The HSA and hUMA is also still developing and not a finished technology… The inclusion of discrete graphic cards for example won’t happen until next year!

Also, AMD’s Kaveri will be the first product with HSA and hUMA but that won’t come out until the end of this year… with actual products using it probably not showing up until early next year…

While, even if they succeed in getting industry standardization and the consequential support that’ll provide… It can still be a few years before we see real benefits, at least outside of the server market where such features will be easier to see a benefit for but it will take longer to apply to consumer range applications!

On Mali vs PowerVR… Jml is correct that Imagination dominates and not Mali!

You’ve got the wrong idea then. It’s exactly for C/C++ code (and others) and to turn that code into pseudo-assembly style Javascript. This Javascript will run in any browser, but will get a speed boost in Firefox (and it could make it to Chrome as well). The great thing is that the compiled C++ code can run at near native speeds.

It’s stupid to complain about a new OS not having software, the OS needs to be close to a first release before it’s worth developing software for.

Wow you don’t know ANYTHING!!! Wrong the era of proprietary architecture doesn’t end because you want to its still here and going strong. Nope Intel will NEVER make ARM SoC’s and why would they when Their 22nm atom is going to cream every ARM SoC in existence. No Apple is at least 40% of the market at here in the U.S.A!!!! Wow you really like ARM you foolish Fanboi!! x86 will NEVER DIE because of Intel ATOM. Vanilla ARM is not good enough for tablets it uses too much just like AMD!!! Wrong there aren’t that many people making ARM chips there are about a dozen and apple dwarfs them all. I can’t believe how foolish you are. ARM is monopoly of power guzzling chips. No ARM will NOT sell that much sorry. Intel has BY far the best performance per watt NOT even ARM can match Intel in Performance per watt anymore. Intel Broadwell will be Intel’s Answer to ARM and it will render AMD and ARM useless WITH ONE ALMIGHTY CHIP!!!!!

Apple doesn’t even sell 1% of the ARM market. Looking at the advanced GPU smart device market, Apple barely represents 5% of that market. You know nothing. Imagination is just desperate because their tech isn’t special enough, but they’ll be fine and without ARM imagination is nothing. The Intel CEO was fired like a looser, he is a stubborn dumbass just as most of everyone else working at the Intel company. Intel revenue and profits are down 25% year/year and their downfall is only accelerating. Intel is completely dead. It is not only to do with ARM’s superior performance per watt per $, it is about ARM’s business model, it is because the world of semiconductor providers can make ARM processors to completely destroy Ultrabooks, Netbooks, Intel Servers, Intel Desktops, Intel has ZERO chance to ever get any traction in neither Tablets, Smartphones or anything else. Intel x86 is a piece of shit of a business model that has zero place in the 21st century. The era of crap anti-competitive proprietary monopolies is over. Intel simply is about to be forced to admit their failure and to admit their destruction and Intel is going to announce a whole range of ARM Processors, including that Intel’s foundries are going to be used to mostly make ARM processors instead of x86. x86 is not going to die overnight. But just as ARM dominates 99.9% of smartphones, ARM dominates in 99% of tablets, ARM is going to soon enough dominate in 75% of new servers, 75% of new laptops and in 90% of new desktops, there will still be x86 machines sold by the millions in 5 years from now, but ARM machines will be sold by 10x to 100x more in each of the different product categories, it has all to do with the business model, the ARM ecosystem of companies represents hundreds if not thousands of companies and their engineering and their output is ALWAYS and FOREVER going to be way way way biggest and thus stronger an ecosystem than anyting one single company wants to do being incompatible with the rest of the world. The era of the proprietary architecture is over.

Again How Naive Charbax i’ll say it again MIPS is NOT dead. That is true ImgTec will make MIPS SoC’s. Ahahah….Mali does NOT decimate the market sorry apple is the biggest seller of ARM devices and they use Imgtec the most efficient GPU on the market!!!! Intel’s CEO quit and new has took his place and HE KNOWS WHAT HE IS DOING AMD IS FINISHED and ARM is in BIG trouble. Oh about the MIPS deal Imgtec said that Intel doesn’t have sa much to worry about as ARM. I will NEVER be defeated by such a NAIVE person. Arm Cortex A-15 is not all that good at all and Intel is more powerful and efficient than it. Just wait until 22nm atom later this year its going to make mincemeat outta ARM’s COrtex a-15 and a-50 series. M$ is going to die that’s a fact but Intel’s too big and strong to DIE!!!! What ARM Cortex A-15 laptops the only one I have seen is the CRAPPY chromebook using a power hogging samsung SoC!!!!!

HSA Foundation show that the future developing of architechture of SoC will be heterogeneous from both long lasting battery use in mobile devices that in future probably will also use energy harving from radiation of the radio waves which the mobile device is communicate with.

And the development towards many cores in ARM based following generations after Cortex A15 will use a lot of different approach for consuming less energy thanks to the development of HSA Foundation.

On patentleapple .com they have written in 2011 about that Apple have got US patent for integrating solar cell under a display so when display is not showing anything and is laying on a table in the sun, the mobile device is charging from the sun.A example of many for the development for longer battery life in mobile devices.

You know nothing. ARM owns all MIPS patents now, but there is nothing ARM can use with them. Nobody is going to do anything with MIPS, Imagination is desperate because Mali graphics totally dominates the GPU market in 2012 and 2013, coming to the market so fast, Intel is dead and they know it, which is why Intel stock price, Intel market revenue/profit, all collapsing, Intel CEO is fired, new Intel CEO probably doesn’t know what he is doing, if Intel doesn’t announce ARM chips in the next 3-6 months, Intel will be definitely dead. ARM Cortex-A15 is the death of Intel, Cortex-A15 Laptops destroy the Wintel market, Microsoft and Intel know they are dead, and so do you. Anyways, stop wasting my time, know your defeat and stop replying here.

How Naive ARM does NOT go that low and MIPS isn’t truly dead. No Intel is already lower power than ARM and its faster too. ImgTec bought MIPS and they will make a comeback soon and ARM will be sorry. Also Intel is getting serious about low power and when that happens ARM can’t match them. Do you have ANY IDEA how much power ARM cortex A-15 uses? Heck Some AMD tablet chips on battery power use about as much and they are x86 chips.

Man, you are making things up which is really ridiculous. ARM chips can consume down to 0.00001 Watts per hour, it’s just quite moronic to suggest Intel ATom is lower power, that is never going to happen, Intel is just a pure crap company going down the toilet. And MIPS Is just dead, there is no reason to even talk about MIPS, so please stop wasting my time.

No I really am not being ridiculous ARM uses too much power and that’s why Intel has caught up already. Intel Atom is faster and uses less power than ARM does!!!!! ARM has monopoly on smartphones however they are no longer efficient at all. MIPS has that title now with Intel in second place and ARM way behind in third place.

Ahahah HSA is worthless!!!! It doesn’t work for emulation or gaming so it pointless for me. HSA won’t help ARM’s power consumption problem.

You are being really ridiculous. ARM can go as low in power consumption as needed in the design, ARM industry ships over 8 Billion ARM processors per year, exactly because the ARM Processors are the most power efficient in the world.

And with the HSA Foundation we will see further progress towards even higher diversity between SoC for different applications.
http://hsafoundation.com/
Where the demand for both much more energy efficient SoC
and many cores for higher processing power will be developed.

ARM is still useless for ultra low power usage. Mips is the Only CPU that can do that now. ARM will be fast and it will use fairly low power about as much as Intel’s Atom if not more for the Cortex A15 which is a power hog.

ARM big.LITTLE concept with Cortex A7 with 2 cores and Cortex A15 with at least 4 cores will in next generation of course be much better than Cortex A7-Cortex A15.

Thanks to the Commonplatform consortium between IBM-Samsung-GlobalFoundries.

TSMC developing progress to FinFET (because of TSMC progress to FinFET is now Apple ready to change foundry from Samsung to TSMC of their A-processors).
Rockchip SoC are made by TSMC in Taiwan!

ST-Ericsson development towards FD-SOI, the ARM-based SoC will be much more power efficient next coming years

That is true however ARM is not suited towards devices like watches and glasses because its power usage it just way too high. The Ingenic jz4770 is the type of chip google should be using it beats EVERYTHING ARM has when it comes to low power usage.

But because that Goole Glass is so small it will be difficult to shoe video content
or record video with such small battery.
Israeli company Lumus-optical have googles that looks better for video content sowing om both eyes and with a electri cord to this video googles it vill be longer lasting than the Google Glass can show.

I see you’re right on that one. But Online games are NO replacement for REAL local gaming. Google Glass IS A JOKE!!!! They didn’t use MIPS and because they didn’t the battery life on it IS A BIG JOKE!!!!!!!

But the progress of Online gaming will increase now when more and more people around the world buy this portable computers with very small form factor as tablet pc,phablets and smartphones and maybe soon with
projection on glasses like Google Glass and similar tech.
