Imec institute in Belgium have annonced that they have developed an transciver for 60GHz band which is using 35mW.

The economic imperative makes Charbox’s argument more compelling to me. Geeks like us, that pay attention to what’s going on in the hardware and software industry actually do look for the latest cool  gadget, but most people don’t. They consume content and chat with their friends. The STB, PVR and TV are already converging into the smart TV. Cloud storage (facebook) is already the prevalent format for pictures for many people. Three people out of nine in my office carry a personal hard drive with their whole media collection on it, I have my whole music collection on my phone and so do most of my students and colleagues.
 
The point is, whether the extra processing power is in the Smart TV (It isn’t) or the phone/tablet, people will use that option because it is more convenient. The Smat TV/phone combination will not be a PC. It will not do all the things that a PC does, but it will (already does) replicate those functions that most people use most of the time.  The PC, that gets used in most households as a communication device, will no longer be relevant to those users.

However, I’d like to see something like the Asus Padfone, but in a one-size-fits-all form factor with industry-standard connections (microHDMI/MHL/microUSB) and a keyboard dock that also works over Bluetooth. Also, i’m still partial to HDMI over MHL as it won’t let me plug in an external HD filled with videos and MHL only supplies 500mA while tablets need more.

I’d rather not have to switch to Ubuntu or ChromeOS for dock-mode. Motorola’s latest beta for dock-mode drops the current customized Ubuntu build and just runs the existing ICS install. It’s a much simpler and more elegant solution than having your phone run two different OS’s with different capabilities and having to keep everything synchronized between the two.

I’m a fan of ChromeOS but it’s ahead of it’s time.  Web developers, app developers and the HTML5 standard need 2-3 years to catch up with the vision.  ChromeOS browser for Android should be more than enough for now but I can’t wait to one day ditch most native apps for a bookmark.  Similarly, Mozilla’s Boot2Gecko is hugely interesting.

Video over WiGig sounds very cool but I’m concerned about battery drain. Docking is still important for charging and extended use. In the meantime, a product called xBounds by DreamchipRnD (search youtube) seems to achieve amazing results using current hardware.

No, that’s my point, there’s no market for “not having to buy 3 new devices every 18 months,” other than a small cadre of geeks.  Yes, you could theoretically run a full 1080p UI off some smartphones, but since no smartphone has a 1080p screen and it would be pretty taxing to drive a 1080p UI, no phone allows you to do a full 1080p UI.  Trust me, I’ve looked, there’s not even a non-iPad tablet that will do it, as I wanted to run my 1080p monitor off an Android tablet, but none of them will do it.  Many will let you play 1080p video on your 1080p monitor from a smartphone/tablet, but none will drive a full 1080p UI.  The only mobile devices that will do it are the upcoming 1080p tablets, like the Transformer Pad Infinity or Acer A700, which do not even have US release dates yet.  So this is another one of those software problems that I mentioned, that are holding back the hardware, though partially because they know much of the hardware cannot handle it yet.

And once the basic smartphone can do 1080p easily, then everybody will have the 4K2K monitors you were crowing about a couple months ago, 🙂 and nobody will want to drive those using their 1080p smartphone when they can buy a home server and really get the full potential of their 4K2K monitor.  And that’s the same reason why nobody will keep the same hardware for 10 years, because there will always be cool new things you want the new hardware for.  The bigger point here is that the mobile use case is fundamentally different from the home use case: mobile is more about power efficiency while home is about raw computing output and just because a few people can combine the two, doesn’t mean most will.  I currently use a single ultrabook for work and home, and torrent or stream media through it onto my 1080p monitor- no TV bill for me- so the ultrabook does everything for me: home, work, and media.  But most consumers aren’t like me, which is why they spend a lot more on big-screen TVs and cable TV connections and set-top boxes and desktop computers.

As for “instant cloud access,” not sure what that refers to.  If you mean that people will simply run their desktop in the cloud, there are still network issues with doing that.  If you just mean doing more in the web browser, I don’t know if you noticed but the web browser has itself become a bloated beast: it’s hardly a thin client anymore.  Consumers don’t want to just have a single device and then carry it from the living room to their desk every time they want to do something: they’d rather pay more for multiple devices and have everything get automatically synced between devices by the software.  The only people who want a single device are silly geeks who like the coolness factor of using one device for anything, even if it means using an underpowered device to run photoshop or Final Cut at home or putting a lower resolution 720p UI from their smartphone on their 1080p monitor.

There’s a market for not having to buy 3 new devices every 18 months as ARM Processors double in speed and new features are added. This year, the all-in-one ARM Powered device has a BOM cost of $200 for up to 3Ghz peak ARM Cortex-A9 quad-core as little as 28nm process near 200 million polygons per second. Next year the performance can be double for the same price. The point is now the ARM Processor that goes in your pocketable device is powerful enough to run full UIs and full video on your 1080p HDTV and PC monitor, ergo, you do not need to buy 3 devices every time a new level of performance is reached in the world of ARM technology.

Though sure enough, I also believe that at one point, perhaps even now, there is enough performance, and that everyone can simply buy 3 devices and use them for 10 years and no need to upgrade. Basically once the performance of each of these thin clients is enough to allow for instant cloud access, you don’t need faster performance than instant.

Though even as arguably enough performance is available today for instant cloud access on each terminal, hundreds of millions of consumers still are interested to get the next levels of ARM performance, hundreds of millions of consumers are tempted by the current amazing quad-core ARM Cortex-A9 at 32nm but would also like to buy 28nm ARM Cortex-A15 powered devices next year or even by the end of this year. So by that simple logic, those consumers that do still want to get the latest and best now and next year, we don’t need to buy 3 devices again and again, simply use MHL on the pocketable one and you’re covered for all your screens. Up to around 5″ in your pocket, up to around 7″ in your jacket pocket, if you absolutely want around 10″ in your sofa.

By: Joakim https://armdevices.net/2012/05/06/the-inevitable-convergence-exynos-4412-getting-too-powerful-for-just-being-a-phone-it-needs-to-use-mhl-for-icschrome-osgoogle-tv/comment-page-1/#comment-12949 Sun, 06 May 2012 06:38:00 +0000 http://138.2.152.197/?p=79799#comment-12949 It has nothing to do with disrupting or fear, there’s just no market for it.  Nobody wants to carry all their videos on their smartphone, a tablet maybe, or drive their HDTV with their smartphone.  Those are geek dreams that most consumers don’t care about: they’re perfectly happy having a set-top box dedicated to the TV, as long as the smartphone can wirelessly sync over any data that’s necessary, like that vacation video they just recorded on their GS3.  And the biggest issue is software: you have different software on the desktop, Windows 7, from the smartphone, Android 4, from the set-top box, all kids of weird firmware.  The notion that you can magically fix all that with some fantasy blend of Android, Chrome OS, and GTV is just silly, especially considering the latter two are both failures.

We have a long way to go before all this shakes out, but this notion of simply docking your smartphone everywhere is not something most consumers are ever going to jump on.  Much more likely is that we’ll keep buying a mix of hardware that we use for different types of computing, with the mix changing from desktop/set-top-box/smartphone to tablet/home-server/phablet over the coming years.
