Scott Ananian https://armdevices.net/2011/10/30/olpc-xo-1-75-hands-on/comment-page-1/#comment-10985 Sun, 30 Oct 2011 03:13:00 +0000 http://138.2.152.197/?p=25112#comment-10985 The XO-1.75 has an ambient light sensor — when the software support for that is finished, you won’t have to manually turn off the backlight when you’re outside in direct sun, it will do it automatically.  That will save a lot of power for kids, who don’t remember/know to turn off the backlight when it’s not needed.

The real benefit of the XO-1.75 is drastically reduced power consumption, which is a *big* deal in most of OLPC’s deployments.  The 1.75 is the first machine that can run on solar power alone — that is, you don’t need to use a solar panel to charge a battery, and then run from the battery.
