I think companies like Sony are a part of Mpeg-LA. I think the free and open VP8 codec is more useful for small companies such as small Chinese smartphone makers, they can use VP8 only and not have to pay any licence fees to sell and showcase their devices in Europe and the USA.

Open Source and non-propritarian codec shall be used in so many applications as possible for a more open world were use of audio and video codec shall not force users of any use to force users to pay licens fees.
