More correctly address this question to chipset vendor, not to Google. For example Android 3.0 Honeycomb tablets based on the ZMS-20 chip to be showcased 31.05-04.06 at Computex 2011.

Hey Charbax, good post and interesting. As an Android user getting into developing, not to mention a long time Archos user and “guru” on your site, I am also interested in what they have to say. I’m also an open source developer, but I don’t begrudge Google their business plan. I wonder if Google was not cooperating with these platforms if there would be sour grapes leaking out in the blogsphere. I’m guessing they would cooperate with any company that would sign an NDA in good faith and not play games. As Archos is due to make an announcement next month there is one metric to look forward to. Keep up the good work!

Google is rightfully keeping what is their’s their’s. Why does everyone expect this company to be any different than any other closed-minded operation out there? Just because they say they are great and “do no evil” does not mean they are and don’t. Get over it people.

Ahh, that’s what I was worried about. I had vague hopes that I was reading the Apache license terms wrong, but I guess not.

It’s too bad as I really want to see how Honeycomb performs on my Archos 101. On the Transformer I just got it’s beautiful (let’s hope ASUS sticks with the fast updates it’s been doing so far and gets 3.1 soon).

In reply to Anonymous. I believe Google has released all the GPL stuff already the day the Xoom came out. But that is not enough to compile Honeycomb, all the Android higher level features are within Android's Apache licence which as far as I understand means Google and anyone else is free to take those parts, change them and keep the changes closed for as long as they like.

Out of curiousity, since Android is under the Apache license, could someone take Google to court to release the source or would that only apply under a license like GPL? While I generally like Google, I find their unwillingness to release the Honeycomb source very bothersome regardless of how “done” it is.
