All the current Archos tablets can simply get Honeycomb through a firmware update.

Yes Archos products have a nice price point and that is all up to now. Just by looking at the Xoom, you can see that the step from Android tablets is getting much more userfriendly, but even i must admit that Apple has built a really fluid expirience.
Non of the first Android tablet generation, like Galaxy Tab, Archos or Chinese Products came near the real Deal or Tablet.
I thought the Xoom and Honeycomb would be a greater competion for Apple. What i have seen so far, was not that stunning that poeple think they have to change their tablets.
The only hope is that Archos will introduce a Honeycomb Tablet, which is around 100 bucks cheaper than the big Companies and then we can talk about it again.

Just like there is a release chronology for movies, getting to cinemas in certain markets first, then Blu-ray/DVD, then TV. I believe Google sees this in the chronology of things as well, timing things right not only in terms of overall market share in each product category, but also in terms of how to get all of their partners onto the same bandwagon and all focusing marketing dollars in the same direction. Also, they saw the move towards ARM Cortex-A9 as necessary for that Tablet resolution/size upgrade.

Considering the explosive success of Android on Smartphones since Nexus One was released, it’s also quite incredible how fast Google has moved forward with their software releases, Honeycomb has been designed in record time, and I believe is the first true tablet OS that’s not just upscaled Smartphone OS, in that it uses widgets, notifications, on-screen shortcuts, high def APIs and more in the right way.

I give them credit for making the most money out of this platform, for sure. And I wish them to turn their Macbook Pros into ARM Powered laptops too, that would be a great thing for ARM Powered devices.

But I am also mostly a supporter of free market competition in the ARM industry. So I certainly don’t want to cheer for that illusion that somehow Apple is the only one who knows how to make these types of devices, cause truly they are not. They may be the biggest ones selling and marketing these types of devices, seeing the opportunities and turning them into pure gold, but they are not the only (and in my opinion not the best) choice.

Archos products are well made and affordably priced, but give the fellows from Cupertino some credit, will you?

I highly doubt they ever even planned on having Android tablets at all. If it wasn’t for Apple opening just about everyone in the industries eyes to the opportunities available with tablets, Google would have never thought of it.

Why an issue? For a 100-people company, why would they need to singlehandedly sell more than Apple to be considered a success? Archos is growing their production volume as fast as they think is financially reasonable, and that’s a great success for them.

Archos has been making them as fast as they could afford.

I mean six months after the gen8 release and it’s STILL hard to find the 7o and 10¹ at any given time. I’m willing to bet they’d have sold ALMOST as many tablets as Apple has in the last 6 months. Pretty impressive all things considered.

(This comment posted from my Archos 7o.)

value, yes. Problem is that only recently they seem to get production scaled up enough to keep outlets supplied with products.

What problems. Archos Gen8 was released 6 months ago, and still is better value than anything else yet released to the market.
