It just requires only one man to make a difference, Google got Matias Duarte and now they have Honeycomb and they may be having max. 100 people working on Honeycomb. The battle, first and foremost. is in UI. If Microsoft carries over Taskbar-Start UI from Windows 95 to Windows 8 (ARM) and just wants to sell same Word and Excel (in CES Steve Ballmer showed that) it is not going to work.

Again a crude analogy, Microsoft has become like a man-eating tiger, the easy money from enterprises (Windows also is an enterprise product, Windows’ main sale is to OEMs) has made Microsoft complacent and less ready to take chances and move forward. Whereas Google and Apple have to convince the consumers everyday to make them buy their product (even a small a app like Angry Birds can change mindshare and huge apps like Netflix even more so, ask Google). If I would have to poach from Microsoft I would rather poach Joe Belfiore and leave 1,000 man where are.

What Microsoft does not understand is that man-eating tigers are the first and foremost target of hunters. Look at iPad adoption in enterprises and you know how Microsoft will be hunted down.

Enough ranting…

I think all smartphones eventually merge over to being considered tablets, and all mobile phones are to become smartphones, thus all the 1 Billion mobile phones shipped each year eventually all become tablets. 5″ or less for normal pocket use, 7″ or less for jacket pocket use, 10″ or less for home use. All the while, I think Laptop use with full sized keyboards will continue to grow mostly for home use and for carrying in bags.
