It’s not like Nokia has dominated because of their software so far. They’ve dominated because of their hardware. People buy a Nokia for the hardware. Couple that with an OS that is in high-demand and you have the formula for success. I also think, that if they do it right (use stock Android and cutting edge CPU/GPU chips for highend, and also make under $100 Android phones) they will get 70% of Android fans that right now buy from HTC, Motorola or Samsung.

I agree with this.
Android is good, but only in the short term. It was forked just because the linux process was too slow for Google. They couldn’t wait, they needed the changes right away. But in the long run they will suffer – the linux kernel will move on much more faster then the android linux kernel fork.

Intel needed an OS which ran on Atom.
Nokia needed an OS which ran on what ever architecture they used.

Linux architecture support is well known. This partnership is based on a strict software basis.

I think rather, that Nokia could make great high performance Android phones. They already had 32GB storage on their phones about 2 years ago and what Android phone has that even now? Their camera’s are also widely known as the best quality mobile camera’s available. The screen they have on the C6, the CBD AMOLED is also very good. With their very good hardware quality, they could also add their own Nokia flavour to the Android software, with a different (for the better) UI and include their OVI services.

I must say though, that I really liked Meemo on the N900 and feel it was a shame that Nokia did not give it the support that it needed to make it into a mainstream OS. The new Meego that replaced Meamo isn’t complete for phones, but what I’ve seen so far looks like nothing special.

Instead, they should concentrate on moving the carriers to offer smart phones without data plans. That’s why I don’t get a smart phone. Nokia should team up with Peek Mobile (http://www.getpeek.com/index.html) and offer voice with the Peek service on Nokia phones.

Symbian an featurephone OS.. c’mon you can’t be serious.. That’s a most bollocky statement i had read. Symbian runs circles around Android and esp. iOs in almost every aspect excerpt the UI design it feels unfinished, i agree on that but it has much better foundation than Android any time. Can you tell me why Android 3.0 looks a lot like Symbain & Maemo.. gives me a funny feeling that Symbian is on the right track taking into account that it’s UI layout is being copied by Android team. .

Cost is around ~ US$130 ordered from China, if you buy it from a local re-seller is about US$194

Symbian does feel like a souped up feature phone that barely qualifies as a smartphone. But if Nokia’s claim that porting a Qt-based Symbian app to Meego is quick and painless, that could be very significant and lead to fast growth for their app market.

Nokia could dominate on the value proposition. Where Huawei and ZTE seem to be the only ones aggressively aiming at lower cost. Acer, LG and to some degree Samsung also going there, but not really.

Nokia can sell upwards hundreds of millions of Android phones below $100 and below $200 each, no contract required. Prepaid plans dominate emerging markets, are major part of European sales and carriers like Virgin Mobile, MetroPCS, Cricket and the like are likely to increase smart phone share in the US very fast as well. Those carriers need cheap affordable smart phones, Nokia could make the default best ones on each.

There is a huge differentiation potential in mass manufacturing a Nokia device as good as HTC Desire running full Android and sell it at $199 no contracts required instead of $2400 with a 2-year contract.

I’m still seeing no explanation of how Nokia will come to dominate all phone market segments with Android. What precisely will they do that nobody else has been able to do so far? Where is there room for differentiation?

LG has been trying to compete with Nokia on the low end market here, but the quality of LG phones is very bad.
Having Nokia running Android would be great, here there is gap in the mid range cellphone market that has been filled with Chinese phones around $85 ~ $120 USD, these have nice features but the OS on them is crap. Nokia can come up with better options for this segment of the market.

Nokia lost 12% smartphone market share this last year because of people like you giving them bad advice on platform. Not only is Apple loosing market share very fast, but the market share they have is worth much less per phone in terms of revenues and profit margins compared with Android and iPhone sales.

The figure of 5 million Symbian^3 units sold in last quarter does not mean nothing then? The fact that they will sell close to 10 million post-Symbian^3 units per quarter in 2011. does not mean nothing? They could take Android as mid-term strategy but that is a dumb strategy. MeeGo & Symbian are long term strategies in which they had invested billions.. it’s like telling that RIM and Apple should also adopt Android. Bollocks.. Nokia is a adaptive and strong century old company.

Why Intel!?
When ARM Holdings extreme power effecient processors are well known as most power efficient processors on the market.

They can add Ovi Store support to Android as well.

Android saved HTC, Motorola, Sony-Ericsson, Samsung, Dell, Lenovo, Acer and Asus, even Verizon, Sprint, T-Mobile owe a great deal to Android’s existence for them still being alive and well. Android doesn’t lead to nowhere, it saves the industry from lack of competition in the smartphone space that otherwise would have happened.

A good OS is absolutely useless with no support. Nokia will give up on Meego and go the Android route, they simply have to. And if they do it right, Android will save Nokia as well but in the industry’s most impressive way, turning them from a trend of quickly loosing market share to quickly dominating all phone market segments.

Why would Nokia invest resources into something that leads to nowhere? Android in the long run does not give any differentiation, plus MeeGo (Maemo) is an superb OS, being a pure Linux OS it gives developers and users unimaginable advantages over any other phone OS. BTW, Ovi store has almost 44,000 applications in place and will grow even faster.. http://www.distimo.com/appstores/app-store/21-Nokia_Ovi_Store

I can see Android being used to buy time but having Nokia reach price points that no other company has gotten close to isn’t realistic. The best they can do with Android is to make just another device like everyone else at about the same price.
