Sharp IGZO ramping up mass production

Posted by – October 1, 2013

Sharp shows the latest range of LCD IGZO screens, showing 4K at 15.6″ coming in laptops later this year, 32″ IGZO 4K, and Sharp is right now selling a range of Smartphone and Tablet sized IGZO displays in Japan, why they aren’t yet shipping IGZO much outside of Japan yet, I am not sure. IGZO allows to refresh the screen as slow as 1Hz, saving drastic amounts of power on the screen refresh. Sharp also shows their new MEMS screen demos, made in collaboration with Qualcomm, perhaps Texas Instruments has been showing similar MEMS solutions like this for something like 10 years though (if implemented in displays yet or not I don’t know).

Thompson TCL 4K TVs 50″ and 55″ invading the European Market

Posted by – September 12, 2013

Thompson presents two new 4K TVs for the European market, 50″ 4K and 55″ 4K. The 50″ is to be sold initially for about 2,000-2500 Euros and the 55″ is to be sold for about 3,000-3,500 euros. Consider those are the introductory prices and that one can maybe hope prices to quickly come down during 2014 to for example 1000 euros for 50″ 4K and 1500 euros for 55″ 4K. Both TVs support native 4K content (maximum of 30fps over HDMI 1.X standard) and up-scaling conventional HD content to 4K resolutions with the Marseille upscaling solution certified by Technicolor. Thomson is thus the brand to bring TCL’s 4K TVs to the European market. Here’s hoping that the 55″ 4K TV from Thomson/TCL reach the sub-2000 Euro price point all over Europe sooner rather than later! Consider that TCL is China’s number 1 TV maker. And that Thomson is one of the brands that TCL is using to sells its TVs in Europe!

Cambrios is revolutionizing the touch screen industry, interview with their CMO

Posted by – September 6, 2013

One of the revolutionary new touch screen technologies is created by Cambrios, it’s their ClearOhm® Silver Nanowires, that is now the leading candidate for replacing ITO in touch applications and making strides also in OLED lighting, Organic Photo Voltaic cells, electronic displays and others. At IFA, I interviewed Sri Peruvemba who was very excited about the prospects for the technology. Cambrios ClearOhm technology is replacing ITO not only in applications where ITO cannot play (large monitors, All-In-One computers and upcoming flexible/unbreakable tablets, phones and other devices) but also in applications like tablets and laptops and mobile phones where ITO is dominant. They already have many products in the field (see my video with Cambrios from Computex in Taiwan) and are expecting more tier one design wins to be announced in the near future. Already it’s public that companies like Samsung, Nissha are investors in Cambrios ClearOhm, that the worlds biggest touch screen maker TPK is building a new factory to build Cambrios ClearOhm based touch screens and that Hitachi is also a customer. The ClearOhm product has better transmission than ITO on film, has better conductivity (since silver conducts 100 times better than Indium), is made on flexible plastic material that is 40% thinner and 40% lighter than traditional touch screens, can enable flexible touch screens that ITO cannot since it is brittle, and it is very rugged. The Silver Nanowires from Cambrios is almost invisible in the touch screen, I could not see any pattern or moire that you would see with other technologies like metal mesh and ITO. Also the Cambrios CMO says that they are price competitive even with inferior technologies, that is amazing. During my interview I examined the touch sensors and could not see any pattern visibility. This is why they are winning new business. How fast Cambrios ClearOhm is going to take over the whole worldwide touch panel market is unsure, Cambrios says that they can produce enough silver nanowire material to be in all 1 Billion smartphones to be sold in 2014 if the markets and if the touch screen device producers demand it. I would definitely like to see hundreds of millions of cheaper, lighter, flexible/unbreakable plastics based Cambrios ClearOhm based Smartphone and Tablet designs invade the whole worldwide market as soon as next year!

Allwinner E200 Powered Gajah InkCase E Ink phablet case to be $99- $129

Posted by – August 3, 2013

Gajah International design house shows a unique Allwinner E200 powered E Ink Bluetooth case for you Galaxy Note 2 smartphone/phablet. “InkCase” works like a second casing or another panel for your gadget, On the back side of the casing you find E Ink panel serves as second panel to display photographs, you can read e-book, see the pop-up’s of Facebook and Twitter too. You can have eye on weather apps from your phone and all viewable apps you can see through this second panel. It works on Bluetooth connectivity has micro USB port for charging InkCase. Inside it has memory to facilitate switch over to next picture/page and to do this back panel has two keys.Price yet to be finalised may expect between $99-$129 You can have look here in this video of InkCase for Samsung S2. InkCase is also available for iPhones but works only as photo viewer, . Two colour variants Black & White are available.

The problem is the way this one works is to beam pictures that it has to transmit, decode, instead of sending data to interpret and integrate in clever apps on the E Ink case device. That makes for slowish e-reader mode for now. But maybe they can improve this in software and other device like it a bit better integrated and much thinner and lighter could be huge advancement for changing the back-cover on your smartphone that has removable back-cover or for adding a back-casing to your smartphone and phablet to use the back surface of your devices for new smart potentially ultra-low power E Ink functionality.

Cambrios Silver nanowires to revolutionize touch screens and displays

Posted by – June 9, 2013

Sriram Peruvemba is the new Chief Marketing Officer at Cambrios, the company that is shipping silver nanowire based inks to the transparent and flexible conductor markets. Their ClearOhm material is already replacing ITO and enables high-conductivity transparent film ranging from 10 to 300 Ohms/square. In this video, Sri showed us examples of products already in the market – All-In-One computers from LG Electronics, large area monitors from eTurbotouch, mobile phones from NEC/NTT Docomo, kiosk monitors from G-Vision etc.- that use their ClearOhm silver nanowires. While at Computex we saw more and more devices with touch screens in them, the market appears to be growing rapidly and having more transparent and more conductive touch screens makes perfect sense. And with electronic paper and flexible OLED products getting close to mass production, transparent conductors that can also be flexible/bendable/rollable would be very desirable. We will bring you more updates on this technology in future videos.
