Geniatech dual-boots Linux with Qt UI on their AmLogic based Set-top-boxes

Posted by – December 19, 2013

Geniatech engineer shows how they support dual-booting to some basic Linux from the SD card on several of the Geniatech Android Set-top-boxes, going back to their single-core AmLogic M3 based Set-top-boxes and also to their new ones. Geniatech tries or wants to provide everything open source and unlock their Set-top-boxes so for users who want a cheap ARM Powered Linux box, they can use Geniatech for that also.

Shenzhen Geniatech CEO Interview, AmLogic Android TV Set-top-box Innovation Leader

Posted by – December 10, 2013

Shenzhen Geniatech http://geniatech.com was founded by Mr Fang 16 years ago and is one of the world’s early Multimedia Set-top-box makers. Starting since 4 years ago doing ARM based Set-top-boxes, Geniatech is now the world’s leader using the latest AmLogic multimedia optimized ARM Processors, getting early access to AmLogic alpha development, being able to optimize the multimedia functionality, supporting all audio and video codecs, implementing innovative features that other Set-top-box makers don’t support. For example 4K2K decoding, open source, many licences including Adobe and with a strong support team in Shanghai. The use of ARM Powered Android for TV Set-top-boxes is a high potential high growth market, many competitors are trying to use Android on the Set-top-box, as Google TV is turning into Android TV, Geniatech still has very big room for innovation into implementing Android on the TV Box, doing more customization based on Android and AmLogic’s latest SoC, porting DRM, NFC Driver support on USB, Zigbee driver and more differentiation based on different kind of accessories for example microphone on remote control also TV Tuner USB Dongle, HDMI loop-through input functionality, able to release private API on CEC HDMI Control Interface, IR Blaster, Bluetooth etc enabling customers to develop B2B applications on top of Geniatech’s platform. For example hotel VOD, Games and more.

Geniatech ATV1800 Enjoy TV Quad Core Box does 4K video on AmLogic M802 Set-top-box on new KKTV $1100 55″ 4K LCD TV

Posted by – November 28, 2013

In China, the 55″ 4K TV now sells for $1100!!!!!!!! Dreams come true! We’re all about to get a 4K TV (this one is the Konka KKTV LED55K60U). Android Set-top-box leader Shenzhen Geniatech shows me here their ATV1800 on AmLogic Quad-core M802 with Eight-core Mali-450 to actually playback 4K video over HDMI. This is the beginning of the Ultra HD future, on Android Box, here beautifully showing off this amazingly affordable new Konka KKTV LED55K60U 55″ 4K TV sold for only $1100 all over China!!!! The trick of course is how we in the future will get 4K video contents, the trick I think is to stream it all from the web. I believe most movies of this last century are or can be digitized and made available in 4K streaming as soon as movie studios and cinemateques around the world make the 4K version of all 35mm-sourced or often 4K-digital (for movies filmed in the last 5 or so years) movies available. How much bandwidth does one need for good 4K video streaming? My guess is 20mbitps may be enough, even less sometimes if the 4K comes from YouTube and Netflix, while a good 4K streaming provider should scale above 20mbitps if your home Internet connection for example has 50mbitps, 100mbitps downstream speed or above.

AmLogic M802 2Ghz Quad-core ARM Cortex-A9, TSMC 28nm, 8-core Mali-450 GPU, supports 4K

AmLogic shows their new M802 Quad-core ARM Cortex-A9 (28nm TSMC) with 8-core Mali-450 GPU, showcased in the new Geniatech ATV580 4K Set-top-box, 7.85″ Tablets, 9.7″ Retina tablets, 13.3″ Laptops and more, all running Android 4.3 with mostly 2GB RAM and 4K video playback support. AmLogic claims to provide higher benchmark scores than competing quad-core Rockchip and Allwinner solutions on the market. The AmLogic M802 has dual-channel DDR3 RAM for 4K and Retina screens while the AmLogic M801 has a single-channel DDR3 RAM support for lower resolution devices without 4K support.
